No rulers , templates etc needed , these are very easy and there are lots of free tutorials ! Here is just one of those free ones.

I put batting in mine but did the whole circle. I was winging it! a square of batting would be OK. you just don't need it in the sides of the circles because they need to fold over. I'm thinking the next one I make may not include batting at all.
