It's just pinned so far. I need to quilt it creatively. The center is bubbling. I don't THINK my seams varied that much, so my pattern might need adjustment. On the other hand, I do tend to make smaller seams on smaller pieces. It's a mental thing.

Otherwise, I think I will like it when it's quilted. This one is a wall quilt. I will make a bed quilt one to perfect the pattern.

BTW - I am starting to time my sewing so I can better plan classes. This took 6 hours to sew. That doesn't include cutting time.

Oh my that is Tres' Georgeous. There is no way I could machine piece something like this, my peices would never fit. I would have to hand piece it over papers. You have done a truly beautiful job :)

vicki reno 08-09-2007 12:18 PM

That is really lovely. Beautiful choice of colors and fabrics. I can agonize for days when picking out fabric and color and will have every piece of fabric out of the closet before it is all done and still not be sure that I picked the right ones. But yours really looks nice. I am not sure that I am skilled enough to try that, but I like yours.

Knot Sew 08-09-2007 01:24 PM

that is very beautiful............love it :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

That's really beautiful cathe!! I love your fabric choices. Mine have "bubbled" a bit in the middle at times too, but once they were quilted, you'd have never known there was a problem!! The quilt in my avatar?...one of those "braids" was a full inch longer than the other ones. By the time I'd eased it to fit the piece it was being sewn to, it bubbled a bit, but by the time it was quilted the bubble had gone. Magic I tell ya. Just put a fair amount of quilting in that area and it should be just fine. It's going to be gorgeous!! :)

SandraJennings 08-09-2007 03:43 PM

I absolutely love it! Wonderfully warm ....will pm my address... :D Oh and anytime is fine! :D

Cathe 08-09-2007 04:08 PM

Thank you! Because it's such an old-fashioned pattern, most of the color examples I found were pink and blue calico! These fabrics are all from my stash. That black paisley is a VIP/Cranston print from Walmart, and I just love it. It's left over from the wedding ring quilt I posted a while ago.

That is beautiful! You've just given me an idea for my mother-in-law. She has beautiful flower gardens & loves Dahlias.

quilt1932 08-10-2007 03:36 AM

Absolutely gorgeous. The dahlia is on my list of things to do some day.

joy 08-10-2007 06:48 PM

Hi Cathe, Love your qult - what size is it and where did you get the pattern from please? Great work.......

Marilyn Philips 08-11-2007 12:35 PM

Cathe: Your dahlia is gorgeous. I sure don't see any problems there. My one stumbling block seems to be quilting patterns. I am still very inexperienced in selecting the right pattern to really enhance my quilt design. :D :D :D

live2teach 08-11-2007 01:14 PM

That is amazing. I love this. I sure don't see any problems there either. It looks perfect to me!!!

Deb Poage 08-11-2007 07:29 PM

:D The giant Dahlia. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I love your choice of colars, it really gives demention to the quilt. Where can I get the pattern for it? I would love to make one myself.

joy 08-11-2007 10:17 PM

I have downloaded the giant dahlia but can't find out where it has gone !!! Have tried to print the picture of it but it won't print it.... what a shame..... where did you get the pattern from please? Would love to have a go at making it...

Cathe 08-13-2007 12:17 PM

I found a pattern in a couple old 1980's Quilt magazines, and it seems to work ok (with a little adjustment). And it's pretty much identical to the one in a book I just bought: Quick and Easy Giant Dahlia Quilt on the Sewing Machine by Susan Aylsworth Murwin and Suzzy Chalfant Payne. I did not assemble it according to the directions in that book -I sewed it in quarters, then in halves and then together. If you do a google search for "giant dahlia quilt pattern", you will find a few different patterns.

Here is the site for the dahlia... it says somewhere along the line that the site has shifted but if you wait for a few seconds up comes the pattern to print off.... it is the dahlia plus the edging.... the whole quilt.... all 10 pages of it.....

I hate to be a wet blanket, but that site looks like a direct copy of the (copyrighted) book. It's illegal to do that, even though she isn't making any money from it. Copyright laws are important to all of us who do creative work!

Denise 08-17-2007 10:22 AM

I also purchased that book, i just havent had to courage to do it yet. I just love the giant dahlia, maybe this winter i'll attempt to try it. Love you quilt Cathe, great work.

Nepthys 09-13-2007 07:37 AM

This is a beautiful colorway.

I recently saw one at the Amish quilt shop I buy supplies from (dirt cheap!). It was in a blue colorway with a white background. There were swans, butterflies, and birds hand quilted into the white. It was fabulous. I wanted to take pictures, but didn't want to affend the wonderful lady that answered all my silly questions about it. Besides, she gave me a gigantic donut she'd just removed from the fryer and glazed. :)

amma 09-13-2007 09:36 AM

Sooo Beautiful, don't see a blooming thing wrong with it :D You did an awesome job on it and cannot wait to see the picture when it is hanging on your wall!!!

Steve 04-12-2008 12:06 PM

Cathe, I've been thinking about this for a long time (or at least when I saw your beautiful work) and now that I’m starting to work with circles (curves) I think I’ll think some more. Maybe in the future…

I found this site with directions, are they close to what you used? It keeps redirecting me to another page, but should work:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/6349/PatBlueDahlia.html

I also saw this site with a mini Dahlia and liked the results too:

barnbum 04-12-2008 03:24 PM

WOW!! Gorgeous!! I'd not attempt that, nope, not me. But I sure do love looking at them!!

Lucky Patsy's 04-12-2008 07:42 PM

Wonderful! You are a talented color and fabric chooser!

Pam Pollock 04-12-2008 09:53 PM

Cathe, That is just beautiful!! I have a question for you as you seem to be wise in these matters. How can you tell if a pattern is copyrighted if it doesn't say copyrighted on the pattern? Usually sites have protection to make it so that you can't copy if your not supposed to don't they? I would like to know how to tell the difference.

DJ 04-13-2008 05:55 AM

Beautiful quilt!

How about this template? http://tinyurl.com/3lpfvy "Not So Giant Dahlia Template Set"

Any idea how easy this might be to use and figure out? I'm not a very experienced quilter but can usually follow directions. This size seems more appealing to me. I love dahlias!

tlrnhi 04-13-2008 06:17 AM

That's really pretty!!

I wonder if anyone has contacted the original pattern holder Cathe? You are absolutely right, copyright laws are very important. I'd not even want to utilize that site now. Thanks for pointing it out.

All it takes is someone with a scanner/printer to put it out there. Just like lots of other stuff, just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be.

I agree. However, I'm not sure how you would be able to tell about the copyright when someone does that. How do we go about checking to see if it is copyrighted?

Dawn Hendrix 04-14-2008 12:38 PM

BEAUTIFUL!!!!! You did a GREAT JOB!

Lisa 04-15-2008 08:03 PM

Cathe you've done a fantastic job on your dahlia! The colors you choose look as though they are all layered on top of each other just like the flower pedals of the dahlia do! Wonderful!!!! I have always liked that pattern and will have to give it a try one of these days. Thanks for sharing!

Bevanger 07-26-2008 06:11 AM
