It IS very beautiful. I love all the stitching. What fun to rediscover this treasure.

Dodee 02-09-2012 07:22 AM

A very talented friend of mine in Indiana made a chicken scratch quilt and it was absolutely beautiful. GORGEOUS.

I would like to thank you for your help in posting pic's. That is simply Georgous ! I have been thinking that I would like to make a 8 pointed star quilt and you just confirmed that thought . I have never made one and I hope I can do it as good as you did. Is the template a diamond for the star?

Chris Anders 02-09-2012 07:43 AM

Did you use the Plaid for backing or the white ?

I already had a picture. found it yesterday while cleaning out old newpaper photos from my writing days. This is called chicken scratch for those who have never seen it. Hope you enjoy my quilt. I plan on digging it out and getting it quilted so I can enjoy it. I had forgotten how pretty it was.

Not only is it quilted it has snowflaking on it! Thanks for posting.

I cannot take credit for this. My dear Aunt made this for me many years ago-my favorite color too. I proudly keep it on my guestroom bed! I remember a lady working on these while she was on break when I had my first job

That pillow is a treasure!

Joannes does not stock cotton gingham. I sometimes do chicken scratch and I love to do it, but had to go online to find cotton gingham. It is hard to find

amizjeanne 02-09-2012 08:53 AM

Very pretty and creative.

amizjeanne 02-09-2012 08:57 AM

This quilt is so pretty - so different from others.

rural01 02-09-2012 10:03 AM

I have never heard of this, nor seen it, but I've always loved gingham. I love the technique. It is really quite beautiful--both the quilt top and the pillow. I love learning new things here--happens just about every day.

Rose Burnett 02-09-2012 10:47 AM

Your quilt is quite attractive. Do quilt it and enjoy. I also like the sweet pillow. That would be a good hand project while
waiting.

4dogs 02-09-2012 10:52 AM

wow, that black/white is terrific.......you did a super job..............

annthreecats 02-09-2012 10:54 AM

I love the gingham. It so homey. My very first sewing project was a half apron we made in sewing class where we counted the squares of the gingham to measure it for each piece of the apron. It was so cool.

Love the quilt and the pillow. Thanks for sharing.

butterflies5518 02-09-2012 11:07 AM

Wow, I hadn't thought of chicken scratch in a gazillion years! Use to do it in my younger days. Your quilt and the pillow shown by another are really pretty.

caliquocat 02-09-2012 11:19 AM

Really lovely photos. Be sure and show us the finished quilt. (I know you will) I remember doing stitch work on gingham for my daughters little dresses, along with smocking. It was always an "attention" getter. :^)

Does anyone make 100% cotton gingham. I love the look of gingham especially in a baby quilt but have only been able to find cotton poly.

I've got some. I don't know where I got it, But I've got several different flavors in my stash. I don't like the poly cotton for this it ravels too bad.

KimS 02-09-2012 12:48 PM

I'd forgotten about this type of needlework!! Yours is gorgeous!! Hmmmm...maybe my next project. Sure hope I live long enough to get to all of the "next projects". LOL!!

Ruby the Quilter 02-09-2012 02:05 PM

Gorgeous! Brings back memories of the gingham quilts my Grandmother made - and she did the chicken scratch on soe gingham aprons.

stichinluvr 02-09-2012 02:30 PM

Love chicken scratch. Haven't done it in years. Thanks for the sweet reminder.

Is this very hard to do and do you need a pattern or can you just kind of figure it out on the squares? It is lovely work and I would finish it quickly so as to show it off and to look at every day.

gmloves2quilt 02-09-2012 05:26 PM

It is a beautiful quilt. You really must finish it. Love your Aunt's pillow too.

abc123retired 02-09-2012 06:08 PM

Oh, I did designs on aprons years ago but never knew it was called chicken scratch. I still love it and your work is gorgeous. The pillow is superb and tempts me to replicate it for my bed in blue. Thanks for sharing. Will search for some cotton only gingham.

ShabbyTabby 02-09-2012 06:18 PM

I made one in red and white with chicken scratch for my first GD and she's now 27 and still has that quilt. Actually chicken scratch isn't hard to do. I found it relaxing. Like the other lady said, it does take time.

Melrose 02-09-2012 06:34 PM

I made a pillow like yours for my Mother-in-law, at least 30 yrs ago. Boy that was a long time ago. It is still sitting on her couch. She will soon be 101.

cdmmiracles 02-09-2012 06:34 PM

beautiful!!!!

T-Anne 02-09-2012 06:42 PM

Very pretty, both items. I love gingham.

Here is an 'overview' of chicken scratch and it even has the pattern for the star used in this beautiful quilt.

I am making one at the moment, in shades of navy and cream. This block is one of them, as it is a sampler. I've only done 6 blocks so far, so it will take an age before it is finished. Your quilt gives me an option for quilting. I was thinking about using large, navy blue ,tacking stitches around each shape so that it was in -keeping with the style. If anyone is looking it up on the web it is also called Depression lace and Australian lace. I'm happy with Chicken Scratch as it is very relaxing.

I used to do that when I was a kid. I made aprons for all my aunts with the "Chicken Scratch" around the hem area, for Christmas presents. I did so much hand sewing as a kid, that my hands now have arthritis and I CAN'T do that stuff anymore.

ItsJustMe 02-10-2012 07:10 AM

Really lovely. I've wanted to use gingham for a quilt for a long time.

Chicken scratch is a series of X's and crosses in a square. These, in turn, will make your design. I used to make my designs and then "fill in the blanks". This is beautiful and a great example.

hershery 02-10-2012 07:16 AM

very pretty, show us a picture when she is done.

sguillot 02-10-2012 10:29 AM

I love the pictures, now I want to make one. Years ago my mother marked a long piece of gingham for a full skirt and my summer project was to cross stitch that skirt to keep me busy and out of trouble. I guess it worked because I inherited her love of quilting and sewing. I'll bet many of us have memories like that.

nannyrick 02-10-2012 11:25 AM

Oh, that is so pretty.I love it.
