Gingham Quilt

2 Attachment(s)
Someone was asking the other day about whether or not anyone ever used gingham in quilts or not. I was jumping up and down raising my hand. But, knew my top was stuffed away in a trunk and I'd have to move mountains of stuff to get to it for a picture. Well, guess what? I already had a picture. found it yesterday while cleaning out old newpaper photos from my writing days. This is called chicken scratch for those who have never seen it. Hope you enjoy my quilt. I plan on digging it out and getting it quilted so I can enjoy it. I had forgotten how pretty it was.

I cannot take credit for this. My dear Aunt made this for me many years ago-my favorite color too. I proudly keep it on my guestroom bed! I remember a lady working on these while she was on break when I had my first job

rootyr 02-08-2012 04:34 AM

It is very pretty. I hope you finish it!! A treasure!

gollytwo 02-08-2012 05:04 AM

Wonderful quilt that you'll enjoy finishing and showing.
Pretty pillow too from rootyr.

Oh, my. that is gorgeous!! I'd like to have that pattern. I think I'll see if I can copy it from your picture. Thanks for sharing.

nabobw 02-08-2012 05:32 AM

QuiltnNan 02-08-2012 05:38 AM

i love your quilt! seems like that chicken scratch would be labor intensive

jillnjo 02-08-2012 05:43 AM

Yes, that is so pretty and unique, be sure to finish it!! And that lavendar pillow is gorgeous! I know a lady who makes this style of quilts for all her many grands when they get married and they are beautiful! Hand work should always be cherished, don't ya think?

quiltinggirl 02-08-2012 05:48 AM

Beautiful!

Its not as hard as it looks. But, it is just like all other hand work, it just takes time. It is a good thing to do when you need a little break. (usually when my fingers get sore)

Tartan 02-08-2012 06:05 AM

Both the quilt and the pillow are beautiful!

lynnegreen 02-08-2012 06:16 AM

Am I seeing your quilt blocks correctly: each block is a solid piece of gingham which has been embroidered on to produce the pattern?

You have changed my thoughts on gingham-from the dark side back to the light side...when seeing or hearing that word I usually relate it to the awful pleated skirts we had to make, in gingham, in 7th grade Home Ec (mine was orange). You have successfully pushed that picture of gingham to the back of my brain. Your quilt is really quite wonderful!

leatheflea 02-08-2012 06:57 AM

I love chicken scratch quilts. I made one years ago in high school with the letters of the alphabet. Yellow gingham with white thread. Your work is lovely! Thanks for sharing!

lfstamper 02-08-2012 06:58 AM

Love them both! What a keepsake the pillow is for sure.

bonitagaye 02-08-2012 07:06 AM

That is awesome!
I was a cross stitcher before I became a quilter and everybody said if you can cross stitch you can quilt! Somehow I never became a hand quilter...it was too slow! I did a few things.....and one was a little bit of chicken scratch! It is so beautiful in reallife. Should be easy to find some good patterns on google! We have an awesome cross stitch store and HL and Hancocks have great books for patterns!

mighty 02-08-2012 07:29 AM

Beautiful.

Nanjun 02-08-2012 07:35 AM

Love the pillow ! I did chicken scratch years ago, but gave everything I made away. I would love to see the quilt when you get it done.

And my flashback is the pattern (her own, of course) my mom used for our gingham and dimity pinafores. Wow, am I dating myself!! I still love gingham, but haven't used it in many years.

pastimesquiltdesign 02-08-2012 08:21 AM

Hey, I made one of those too. Let's see it was before I was married in about 1977. I still have it somewhere. Love your pillow too. Thanks for the memories. Peggy

luvstoquilt 02-08-2012 08:33 AM

That brings back memories...my mother made one for my niece many years ago. Hers was red and white and she cross stitched it with strawberries. So pretty. Thanks for the memories.

Grandma Peg 02-08-2012 08:39 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous. Love that chicken scratch, did it years ago and unfortunately don't have any now. Your quilt will look great finished.

vondae 02-08-2012 10:47 AM

#1, as always, it's fabulous. I think I'm your #1 fan.

And that pillow is beautiful, rootyr. Make me think of my childhood. My momma used to make things like that. I sure do miss her.

fivepaws 02-08-2012 12:03 PM

Golly, I haven't seen chicken scratch for ooh maybe 30 years. I used to love doing it. Sure made a lot of aprons back then. Hope there will be a new interest. Thanks, you did a beautiful job and I love gingham.

QUILTNMO 02-08-2012 12:06 PM

jackied 02-08-2012 01:50 PM

My mother and I made many of the chicken scratch pillows years and years ago. Its fun and you can do it while watching tv. There are many designs made from using this method. I remember she made a pillow with a horse design.

alfosa421 02-08-2012 02:02 PM

Gosh I haven't seen chicken scratch in years-it's great!!!

It is a solid block of gingham fabric. But, it isn't embrodiery. It is needlework called Chicken Scratch. It is just stitches on the outside of the blocks that look like they outline the little blocks and like stars inside some of the blocks that form a design. It is very easy to do and makes the block look like lace around it.

Peggy Jeanne 02-08-2012 05:49 PM

Beautiful quilt, lots of work!!!!!!!

fxsts93kf 02-08-2012 07:57 PM

Absolutely gorgeous! I used to do cross stitch till I started quilting. Now I can't wait to Google chicken scratch and try my hand at it!

sewred 02-09-2012 05:23 AM

Wow now I'll have to get me some gingham when I go to Joann's ! Thank you very much! hee hee! 80)

Elaine433 02-09-2012 05:57 AM

Does anyone make 100% cotton gingham. I love the look of gingham especially in a baby quilt but have only been able to find cotton poly.

scrapbeagle 02-09-2012 06:23 AM

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I have done Chicken Scratch years ago and had forgotten how pretty it was. The quilt is beautiful.

gypsylady5 02-09-2012 07:04 AM

I'll have to find my gingham cats that I started making a few years back. Love ginghams, but they are thin compared with regular cotton fabrics. Still, really pretty made up in quilts and other projects. Good going, both of you!

hperttula123 02-09-2012 07:07 AM

that is so neat!!! I've never seen anything done with gingham before. :)
