Seven is very young for multiplication tables. Her brain will mature by leaps and bounds in the next year. Introduce it, but don't worry. Her eye for quilt design is wonderful and she did a great job arranging those blocks.

We actually homeschool both of our daughters, for many reasons, but one of them being that she has a rare version of a common syndrome, which requires her to be kept warm as much as possible...something that public schools in upstate NY cannot always guarantee. She's always been so advanced in math so I don't think it will take her long to catch on. She can multiply without a problem but it's the memorizing that's taking her longer.
I love her design. Be sure and let her know that shapes are a definitely a part of math. As a retired 1st grade teacher and 4/5 grad math tutorial teacher, may I make a suggestion on her multiplication facts. Teach her the 2's,5's& 10's, then her doubles in all the multip. facts first. Then teach her the 6's. Once she has learned the doubles and the 6's she will be able to do any of them much faster. She only has a few to memorize in the remainders, as she will already have most of them down since 7x2 = same as 2x7, etc. She will only need 7x8 and 7x9 in her 7's and in 8's only 8x9 and in her 9'x she already has them all. That is if you are only going to the 10's. If she learns these it will be much easier to get her 11's, 12's and I taught mine the 15's. Let her use fabric shapes to help learn them. I taught my 1st graders mulp facts but only toward the end of the year did we get into the larger numbers. They pick them up so quickly when they use manipulatives for some children the visual helps out. Make a game of it, some learn much faster with games. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps.

Ooooh....THAT is gorgeous!! Purple is my fav color and I have that Day and Night book on my bucket list...thank you for the inspiration!! (FYI - If your daughter likes music, look up School House Rock on YouTube and look for the multiplication things...they are set to music...my favorites was Figure 8 and number 9....this was one of the ways I learned my multiplication and sometimes I still find myself singing them in my head!! I also memorized the Preamble from these...they use to come on Saturday morning between cartoons!!)

Thanks for the suggestions! We had the thought about games, too. Our oldest learns best by the "Discovery Method" and we bought games to help her through. Our youngest has always been a book learner but she does enjoy the games. Each week we have a board game night and last week we played "Sequence Numbers" and "S'math", which is like Scrabble but with math problems. We also bought her "Multiplication Bingo" and a few others so they're going on the list. When she was only 4 she learned all of her colors and numbers by playing "Uno", which still remains as one of her favorite game franchises.

How unusual is the design on your quilt. Your children must be learning more than just math. How proud you are of her.
Think she has something going on here, maybe a book deal by a 7 yr old??

She's a natural born artist. That is a great piece. A teacher can find a way to intergrate the math with the quilting.
