Will try this again. Sent it off and it never came through so hopefully it won't come through twice but here goes. The center star is a "no Y seams block" that was taught in a class at my quilt chapter meeting using scraps. Liked it so much that decided to enlarge it out for my 11 year old grandson Michael. Used EQ7 and built the quilt out and did "quilt as you go Patty style." It is a machine pieced and a combination of machine and hand quilting. The sig tag is in the lower right hand corner star on the front of the quilt made using my Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 machine. The quilt is between a twin comforter and twin spread size. Since I hand quit polyester batting is used. I don't use a hoop or frame as I like my quilts to puff a bit and after it is washed it will puff nicely.

Beautiful!!! What size are your HST's??? I am in the process of making a scrappy 8 sided star using 2&1/2 HSTs. So much faster and headache free  .
Hubby wanted to move to the Villages when we retired. Beautiful area.

Fabaddict 06-01-2011 12:48 PM

That is a beautiful quilt and I am sure he will treasure it.
I love the way you extended the star and put on the borders, and I love the colors. Do you have a pattern you can point us to (no pun intended!) for the star pattern?
:) :) :) :)

Hi tms,
Sorry it's been a full year since we did the tutorial. I do have the instructions for it but am not allowed to share it. The class instructor had to get permission to share it and use it with our class. My suggestion would be to do an online search for "no Y seams quilt pattern" and bet you'll find one somewhere. It was surprisingly easy to make this large star though because it was created making blocks and then sewing the blocks together and when you were done, you had a beautiful star. I felt that although I just used scraps, this star was too beautiful not to use. Because of the colors used, this quilt said "Michael" every time I touched from the very first when I began selecting the fabrics. Between my 2 children, they have blessed us with a total of 7 grandchildren and Michael is the last to get his scrap quilt by Grammy. As a scrap quilter, it's hard for me to waste fabrics and this one seems to be a real "people magnet." It always amazes me the reactions everyone has to this quilt when they see me working on it. As a "quilt as you go" quilter with out a hoop or frame, my quilts draw attention and this one sure has garnered not only attention but excited, enthusiastic praise. His Mom loves it and hopefully he will too. It's comfy too.
Thanks for looking.
Hugs
Patty

Thank you Corky and I totally agree with you although I'd never done one and never a star this large. Stars are challenges as it is and even this one isn't perfect but good enough to use - too striking NOT to use.

Nice quilt, and no Y seams. Like the way you added the top and bottom borders, just a great finishing touch.

Hi Lacy,
It has a lot of 4 3/8th inch squares cut in each color used. Pattern says it's a 42 1/2 inch star for a queen or king sized bed which made it interesting to make work for a twin and look right. It will definitely over flow his bed but if he continues to grow as he currently is, he'll appreciate the ample size of his quilt.

We've been in the Villages 6 years this Aug. 29th, 2011 year round and love it here! We do miss family and friends but email is good and we've been going back for a few days twice a year. Our daughter and her children come down for about a week each year and that's wonderful. The children seem to really look forward to coming down as the Villages is very grandchildren friendly. Hope you do decide to retire here. The cost of living is amazingly affordable especially when you factor in all that is offered here. My retired math teacher husband did the math before the move and feels we have come out ahead and we came from a lovely community in IL. The real plus for us is being out of the cold winter where my arthritis really flared up and here move pain free with ease.

Thanks for looking.

Thank you GrammaBabs. Maybe you're hubby will change his mind. It's really a great place but with the economy the way it is, homes in the north aren't easy to sell at the moment and if you need to sell yours before moving, you definitely want to be sure of a buyer first. Ours in IL sold in 7 days and we had 45 days to get out of a 2 1/2 story home where we had lived for 29 years and had a lot of stuff to eliminate as it couldn't come with us to a one level home. We did it somehow. If it's meant to be, you'll work it out. In the meantime, many come down and rent for a month. Have you come down for their 7 day package yet? If not you might want to look into it. Go to http://www.thevillages.com. That's what we did and we purchased our home the 2nd day here but we had been researching both in IL and central FL for a full year before we came down to visit several retirement communities and knew the minute we got here, this was meant to be. It isn't for everyone but it sure is for us. It all depends on what you want for your life style.
Good luck.
Patty

Hi Sue,
Answered this in a previous post. The instructor had to get permission to share the pattern with us so I don't feel I can share it - have to respect copy right laws. You could first try doing a search on this group for "no Y seams star" or "shooting star" and see what comes up. It's a 42 1/2 inch block for a queen or king sized quilt but all you get is that huge center star. If you want to then make it into a quilt, you'll have to do the designing yourself unless you can find one to use. I did use my electric quilt 7 software to design it out, to get the measurements for the borders correct and finding all of the smaller individual star and the fan block patterns used on the top and bottom. The actual quilt design is mine. I honestly don't need software to design a quilt but having it did help me get things the size needed such as it allowed me to size the blocks to the exact size and the "points in" border with the exact size for my quilt. I did design it each step of the way as I worked as I do "quilt as you go Patty style". Will define that in a separate email because bet there will be questions on that one. There always are as people are fascinated that I do my own quilting and don't use a hoop or frame.

First search this group, then try a google search and bet you'll find a pattern.
Thanks for looking.

Really Nice quilt!

That is absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors. I love the design. Congrats on a wonderful quilt

fantastic quilt! You did a beautiful job

laceybritt 06-01-2011 02:23 PM

Thank you Patty!!!! I am also looking at buying the 'Stars by Magic' book that also does not have y seams. I can hand piece them OK but my machine piecing y seams always ends in me taking them out several times to get them to look good.
I love the idea of squares and HSTs, they look better than the y seams IMO.
My family is getting older (me too!) so we moved back to the small rural town I grew up in. I do not have any quilters by me and NO shops, (heavy sigh)! I am the oldest of 6 girls and everyone LOVES for me to make them gifts, but, I am the only one that quilts. Everyone else says it takes too long and they don't have the patience. I agree with them  , but I do know they appreciate my quilts very much so that is a great trade off!
You would think in this area I would have a lot of time to quilt, but I also love the garden. The Vidalia onions kept me busy and it is time for the tomatoes.
The thing I did not remember growing up here is the summer heat. I left my son and daughter in Orlando (close to it!) and I watch their weather. Right now we are about 10 degrees hotter than they are, and that is hot!
I left my 2 grandaughters behind and I do miss my little quilters. I taught both to quilt, and one loves to machine quilt, she made her first quilt at 12yo. She says there is no way she would ever quilt by hand, and I love to.
But they are teens now and stay very busy!
Pefect quilt for 11 yo is Michael!

grammypatty7 06-01-2011 02:39 PM

Michael just turned 11. Just sent you a reply privately. You'll enjoy that book, especially if it's the one I'm thinking of as I've debated about getting it too but haven't. I have so many quilt ideas in my head that it's doubtful I'll be around long enough to make half of them. Creativity and motivation just isn't a problem for me it seems. Thank goodness.

Thank you everyone for all of your kind replies and comments. Please forgive me for not replying individually to everyone but if anyone has questions I will try to reply and answer those. To my knowledge, this pattern is not shareable. I did search this board as well as google but didn't come across this particular pattern although it had to have come from somewhere. There are no copyrights stated or author indications on the copy of the pattern that I have but do know that the lady who taught our class got permission to teach the class to us and to share the pattern with us.

Will send info about my quilt as you go "patty style" in a separate email.

Patty's quilt as you go technique. Just spent a lot of time writing up a good description of what and how I do it and for some odd reason it didn't come through - 2nd failure today.

1. quilted the big center star block first.
2. added the dark blue 2 1/2 inch border to the sides and to the top and bottom. This is added by placing the dark blue face down on the quilted block, the polyester batting on top of this. Then on the bottom of the sandwich place the white muslin backing. All layers are pinned together and then then sewn in a 1/4 inch seam. The order top to bottom is:
1. polyester batting
2. blue fabric face down on top of the quilted star block
3. quilted star block face up (right sides together with the blue strip)
4. white muslin backing on the bottom (right sides together)

This is a variation of one of the techniques used in Marti Michelle's book see below. Purchased mine at www.nancysnotions.com but you can find it at several places online including her own .com web site.

Each border is added one at a time as above, pin/hand basted as needed and then quilted. This can be done working with panels 3 to 4 blocks wide and 2 to 3 blocks (rows) deep depending on what you can individually handle. When doing a queen sized quilt, the top 2 or 3 row panel is assembled and quilted first. While doing this the next 2 or 3 row panel is being assembled. Add to the sandwiched quilt as above. Carefully and adequately pin and hand baste as I don't use a hoop or frame. The quilts are beautiful and wear very well. Yes there are seams on the back but my seams are all machine sewn and no hand whipping on the back side - have done that though and those seams have worn amazingly well.

To add large panels to a quilt, I put one of those cardboard cutting boards on one of our queen sized beds and work there and that works well for me. Begin pin basting at the seam where the quilted and new panel are joined. Pin the seam line down firmly with straight pins. Smooth slowly down the panel and pin baste in place. Then I roll in my computer desk chair and sit down and hand baste that new section 3 inches apart in both directions top to bottom AND side to side. As I baste a section, I roll it up and gradually slide the quilt towards me as I work. Just experiment until you find what works well for you.

There are many quilt as you techniques on this quilt board and on other web sites so just search and explore them until you see something you'd like to try. Hiring quilts professionally quilted is not an option for me plus as long as I'm capable of quilting, I prefer to do it myself.

Hugs
Patty
