I am posting a few closer up pics to answer a few board members questions...I hope this is a start =D This quilt started as a practice piece from scraps that came from a quilt I did for my niece and then grew and grew =D I learned the how-tos from watching videos on YouTube and then just went for it. I have learned along the way and can keep learning. Soon I will be hand quilting it...will be looking for the board to help guide me through that =D

2nd side of one of the final borders.

Hexis are a bit larger than a quarter...a good size for beginning. Not to small, but not too big to handle it.

I hand basted the fabric to thick paper hexis with cheep thread (you will be wasting that threads)

And yes...it is hand pieced =D I don't even want to know how many stitches are invested already

I spent a ton of time on YouTube...just put Grandma's Flower Garden in search and learn =D. Or use English Paper Piecing...

So pretty, I have never really even looked up how to do this type of quilt. I will have to check out you tube...It would really be good for taking along in the car to have something to work on...you just baste the fabric onto the paper? I will look up the video. thanks so much, love the colors...

You GFG-makers are NUTS! This is insane! How long does it take you all to make these?

They are stunning, but... yikes! I'm not sure I can fathom how long it must take!

(You all know that I write all of this in complete admiration, right?)

I love it! Mine has been an when in the car for a long time, before I go to bed, and now I plan to take it to my Dr appointments. My mother in law says I am crazy, but I think everyone should make at least one. Funny part is, I learn how to do mine from YouTube as well, LOL.

each is the size of a quarter!

Gorgeous, love your colors and design.
Did you make or buy your hexagon paper?
I'm playing with one now made with some scrap, I just love doing it. I also learned from YouTube.

sueisallaboutquilts 04-29-2011 07:52 PM

I just watched a tute on Connecting Threads about English paper piecing.
I love doing handwork when we take trips in the car.
Your quilt is lovely!! :D:D

Lovely quilt, and I love the border.

jolo 04-30-2011 04:59 AM

I have made 2 of this pattern. But I hand piece not pp/ PP is too much trouble when I can put the hexes together an hand piece, no pulling papes out. Gave one to my DGD when she was a year old. Washed so many times you would not believe and still a pretty quilt. First thing she packed when she got married last spring. lol

rebeccalr 04-30-2011 05:31 AM

That is fabulous, but I don't know that I would have the dedication to do it. Kuddos to you!!!

Jaos 04-30-2011 05:35 AM

pocoellie 04-30-2011 05:42 AM

I can't even image the patience you must have. Beautiful job!!

cheri62 04-30-2011 05:51 AM

I love your quilt, I would love to try to make one too but I imagine it would be a little too difficult for someone who is just beginning.

dolores 04-30-2011 06:57 AM

I'm using the English paper piecing on one that I have started helps pass the time when setting in Doctors office when I have to take my husband or setting at home watching tv at night. You can buy the hexagons online and they are reusable. I have done several flowers and waiting to get enough done before I sew them together, will wait til I get ready to sandwich it before I remove the paper

The hexis I use of made of card stock...I have read where some are using the blow-ins that fall out of magazines too. I reuse them until they are too soft (I fold mine as I stitch hexis together as the piece gets larger). The web site is www.ciaspalette.com. I print several copies and MikeyB and I sit together and cut them out =D
This morning I finished sewing on the third border. I took a pic with the proud owner, but she was making the weirdest face...said it was too heavy LOL =D

Nice work and great patience. Tho it can be fun to sit and quietly stitch. Something we have forgotten with our superduper machines.
