Grandmother's Flower Garden - a family project

Here is the quilt me and my 3 sisters made for our mother. My sisters are not quilters but they were happy to learn how to sew hexy flowers. And they LOVE it! We stitched together the top and I quilted it.
Since most of the time I stitch alone, in my house, sharing this with my sisters was a fantastic experience.

There are about 3400 ¾'' hexagons; the quilt measure about 65x75.

With large seam allowances under the seams (I used squares to make the hexagons)+ cotton batting, the quilt weights a lot. I would have loved to use other type of batting.

What batting do you use for such a quilt ?

So beautiful!! What fun for you and your sisters! Are you planning another project together? Can't imagine her heart felt joy when she discovers it was made by her daughters. A gift to treasure!!

What a great thing for sisters to do together! It is absolutely beautiful and I'm sure it is well loved by your mother. I have never made a GFG so have no idea about batting. Great job!

That is the most gorgeous and labour intensive quilt I have seen in quite a while. What a wonderful gift for your mother and a great time of sharing something you love with your sisters. Aren't sister the best?

I think your quilt is one of the most beautifully done grandmothers flower garden quilts I've ever seen -- your mom is going to LOVE it! How many hours spent on the long arm machine to do the quilting? It's fabulous!

hdoublej 11-09-2012 07:27 AM

Absolutely beautiful!

Thank you for the kind comments.

I quilted it in 3 days, on my industrial machine. The flower design is a lot of fun, but the pebbling takes a lot of time and it is so boring!

mary quilting 11-09-2012 07:45 AM

Love it. One day I'll make one. I love the way you quilted it

majormom 11-09-2012 07:47 AM

Your quilting just made the quilt pop! It is absolutely beautiful. What a happy bonding time you had with your sisters while doing this for your mother. A family affair. Congratulations! I know this will seem like blasphemy for me to say, but Grandmothers Flower Garden is not one of my favorite designs......HOWEVER the way you quilted yours just blows me away with its' beauty and so now I can say there is one Grandmothers Flower Garden I like.......YOURS!!!!!!!

My sisters and I love to quilt together, even though we only get together once or twice a year. Your mother's quilt is beautiful!

IzzysGrammie 11-09-2012 08:38 AM

Oh my... how beautiful! The amount of work you and your sisters put into this quilt is mind-boggling!

humbird 11-09-2012 08:45 AM

Oh my what a beautiful GFG! My favorite quilt pattern! I am working on my 3rd one at the present time. I have never really cared for the ones I have seen that were machine quilted, but yours has surly changed my mind. You have done such a beautiful job. You are so lucky to have your sisters to work with.

I have used Hobbs 80/20 batting with much success. Not sure that would change the weight however.

Fraew 11-09-2012 08:55 AM
