Grandmother's Flower Garden top FINALLY finished!!!!

2 Attachment(s)
Well, it's only taken me a little under 3 years to finish the top working on it on and off. The entire thing is hand sewn and there are a total of 1,132 hexagons that I have sewn around twice. The finished size is 112 1/4 by 92 inches, so a queen with a pillow tuck. I will be hand quilting it in the traditional method starting this winter, but since I still have to piece the back together and baste it I will still be working on it.

Thanks for looking!!

This quilt is a true work of art. You did an amazing job. I have a grandma's flower garden that my Mother made. It too is a treasure. I made one block at a quilting class one time. I would love to make a quilt. My Mother's is completely hand done. Thank you for posting yours. I love it.

I know! I hung it up, snapped the pictures and took it back down again. There wasn't anywhere to display it inside so the clothes line it was. All in all, I don't think it was hanging there for more than 5 minutes though.

Jeanne S 07-16-2014 03:03 PM

Beautiful! I admire those of you that have the patience for all that handwork!!

QuiltnNan 07-16-2014 03:09 PM

redquilter 07-16-2014 03:19 PM

malega 07-16-2014 04:59 PM

I like the way you changed up some of the centers and the way you treated the edge with smaller flowers. It has a wonderful old fashioned feel to it. Very, very nice.
peace

I do too. I did the same flower setting that you did along your side on the top and bottom edge of mine. CONGRATULATION on getting the top finished. Mine is still hanging in the closet.

Homespun 07-17-2014 06:48 AM

Very pretty..I did a king sized one by hand once! It took me 3 years.

joyful1 07-17-2014 06:39 PM

Beautiful. Looking good so far.

#1piecemaker 07-17-2014 06:48 PM

I love grandmother's flower gardens. Yours is very pretty! I have never counted the hexies in any of mine. That is a lot of hexies!!

Grandma Peg 07-17-2014 07:58 PM

Love it, you did a great job.

pmd 07-17-2014 08:09 PM

I like what you did with the smaller side flowers. They pop in a very visual way. The top and bottom half blocks moving the "flower" center down so it is whole works well too. A lot of creativity as well as work has gone into this top.

PenniF 07-17-2014 08:29 PM

Beautiful!!! "Grandmother" would be so proud. I love what you did along the edges....but can you tell us what you are thinking of for the binding....i would love to know your plan to go around all those hexies. PLEASE tell.

QM 07-17-2014 11:41 PM

what a joyful garden!

debcavan 07-18-2014 03:25 AM

I'm thinking it is going to be bias binding, which I've never done before, so that will be a first as well. I was considering facing it but I folded squares around the papers so some places it is a little more than a 1/4 in the back. Of course, I need to quilt it first!

judykay 07-18-2014 04:35 AM

Beautiful, how are you going to bind & quilt it?
