Grandmother's Quilt

7 Attachment(s)
My grandmother is an amazing and phenomenal woman. She has been through so much in her life. On December 1, 2012, she and my grandfather celebrated 69 years of marriage. In April they both entered the hospital sick. On April 24th, 2013, my grandfather passed away. On April 25th, 2013, she went home and prepared to bury her husband. They were best friends. They were soul mates. They were what love is supposed to be, forever. This Sunday is Mother's Day. I knew there was no better way to celebrate her and to celebrate life than with a quilt of her own.

What started out as strip scraps...

Eventually morphed and turned into something pretty and nice...

However, I was not done there. It was pretty, but it needed something to personalize it and make it a little bit more feminine, so borders were added.

The top was completed and ready to be sandwiched and the quilting was started. How do you quilt something like this? How do you find the right stitch? Sitting I thought about it for a while before pulling out my sewing machine book to look at the stitches. There it was, at the bottom...a "quilting stitch"

After a couple of hours, the quilting was finished and the binding was done. I only shed a few tears while sewing this while thinking of my grandmother and my grandfather. He would have loved this quilt and been proud that his granddaughter made it with her own two hands. My grandmother will love it, but most of all, I know it will help keep her warm on those days that my grandfather would have done it. I'm so blessed to have witnessed such an amazing union between two people and the love that guided them through their lives together. So, here it is...my Grandmother's Quilt!!!

So sorry to hear about your Grandfather. This is a beautiful quilt that you have filled with love. I think making the label from one of his shirts will be the perfect way to finish the quilt. God bless your Grandmother. :)

Beautiful, she will love it. So good of you to share their love story with us. So good of you to make this for her, she will love it.

Yosamitesa 05-10-2013 01:36 PM

Thanks everyone! It has been really rough on my dad and my brother. I've been holding up ok. My Grandmother...WOW!!! She is the strong one. The entire funeral she smiled and was fine. At the grave site, she had 1 tear that fell and that was it. She was ready as she knew he was too. She knows he is in a much better place. Now I did learn a new favorite song at the funeral. It is Sweet Beulah Land. Amazing song. Hugs and Happy Mother's Day ladies!!! :)

I took y'alls advice and printed out what I wrote with the pictures for her to go with her quilt. I'm giddy waiting to give it to her!!! Will let y'all know what she says and take pictures of her with it. :)

Actually I will be picking up all of his work shirts and jeans this weekend. A friend is going to help me make a quilt for my dad out if them. Need someone else to cut them. I'll cry too much. My aunt has all his ties and wants me to make her something with them. I'm picking up handkerchief to embroider one for each grand kid and great grand kid. Gonna be emotional this weekend.

What a beautiful story. The love some people have is beyond measure. I feel that is the way GOD planned for marriage to be. It reminds me so much of my grandparents.

Beautiful - but more beautiful is your story of your grandparent's love. My parents were married 63 years in January. Would love to see them make 69 years.
