I decided to jump in with both feet and teach my DGS to sew and help them make a small quilt for their Mom for Christmas. Julian, the 8 YO caught on real quick and I set up my mechanical machine with a stack of masking tape to help him with the seams. he was sewing at full speed. Jaden the almost 6 Yo was having problems getting an even seam so I did the same for him and then he did much better. I let him use the 9000 b/c it had the speed control. he keeps forgetting to put the presser foot down, but other than that he does fine. we've only worked one afternoon so far. i have to cut out more squares and do some more planning, but here's what they've done so far. I think that i wil let them tie it, so that theywill do most of the work b/c I'll probably have to bind it. we'll see.

Jaden was very proud too.

awwww that's so cute! I can't wait till my daughter is old enough to sew with me. What a beautiful gift - I know their mom will just love it.

marymm 11-04-2010 06:10 AM

Wonderful. My son --now 32--now blames me for not teaching him to sew! You could consider a pillowcase style quilt, no binding just sew all around, leaving a hole to turn, so they will have made it all. But I think they're doing a fabulous job!

Cyn 11-04-2010 06:10 AM

Cute as can be!

I think I've just found out how to get my twelve year old granddaughter to sew, teach her eight year old brother. Another 9 year old GD took right to it.

I just bet those young men would love to have a machine of their own........ They seem sewww engrossed in what they are working on. I think it is wonderful that you are teaching them to sew and it looks as though they are doing a wonderful job. What wonderful memories they are making for years to come. You might consider giving their mama a framed picture of them working on "HER QUILT"...sewww precious!!!

Actually I forgot to mention that I'm taking pictures of them with the whole process (including the boys giving her the quilt)and then putting them in a little album for her to keep. And I won't be surprised if they tell her. they're so excited by the whole idea.

Well said! I love that you are taking pictures along the way! It means a lot to kids that other adults respect their work, besides grandma. Way to go!

gramqlts 11-04-2010 08:57 AM

that's a great thing to do for them!

redquilter 11-04-2010 10:00 AM

They are handsome little boys and doing a wonderful job on that quilt. What a treasure it will be.

jojosnana 11-04-2010 10:13 AM

They are doing a great job. Very serious about that fabric placement. Their mom will cry happy tears...
I taught my grandaughter to sew when she was about 5 but I held her on my lap first because I was afraid she would sew her fingers or something bad. Nothing bad happened and she designs and sews her own Halloween costumes too. She is 14 now.

Patched 11-04-2010 10:28 AM

What a good job they are doing. Their mom will be so happy and you are a great grandma for helping. But I know from experience you as the grandma are getting the best blessing of all by spending time with your grandkids making memories they'll never forget. I know mine haven't.

quiltedlamb07 11-04-2010 10:36 AM
