What a beautiful and sweet memorial

raptureready 04-05-2010 05:53 PM

That is beautiful and thank you, if you don't mind I'd love to use your idea of appliquing them flat. I've got some wonderful hankies (I was going to do a butterfly quilt with them) but some them just don't lend themselves to being folded into the butterfly thing. Maybe I'll do a combination of the two.

Lovely quilt. Mom is smiling done on you. She would be so proud!

grandma Janice 04-07-2010 05:36 AM

Thank you all. this was the most troublesome quilt I have made so far. Anybody interested in doing this, remember two things. you have to quilt through an extra layer of material, and all square hankies are not necessarily square. I wish I had done a simple grid pattern instead of trying to quilt each block differently. But my Sis is thrilled with it so that makes it all worth the problems. She helped sew some of the little articles on. I am trying to get her into quilting but she can't sit still that long.

joannl 04-07-2010 05:46 AM

I LOVE your quilt! I can see why your sis is thrilled.

Your hanky quilt has given me an idea. My husband's mother had hand embroider a whole bunch of white pillowcases on the cuffs. These were beautiful and very detailed. I can't use them because she liked to wash them in bleach and ironed flat with starch. Old school style. She has passed away before I had met her. I don't want to get rid of them but I can't use them either because they smell and they don't feel very sturdy. I have four young boys who are very anti-girlie. I put them away until I can figure out what to do but since I saw your hanky quilt I think I might cut them up and sew them into quilts. Thank you for your inspiration.

Here is a sample of her beautiful work. I see now that some has no cuffs. She just stitched at the opening.

Beautiful!

grandma Janice 04-07-2010 03:22 PM

Sabrina....Oh please do make something out of them. This kind of handwork is a lost art and making them into quilts would be lovely.
