On Sunday, I taught my 8-year old GD, Hannah Mae, how to sew, press, rotary cut and how to put her quilt together. She sewed 9 of the squares herself and then used 3 sqs her 12-year old cousin had left over from her quilt. I put on the border, backing and quilted it for her. It is doll-size. I think she did a great job. She is a natural and listened and followed my directions to the letter. Wow! That was nice. She was able to use my Pfaff 2040. I set it on my typing table and we put the foot peddle on a cushion. Putting the foot peddle on a cushion was a great idea because she could not press down hard enough to make the machine go too fast. We had a lovely day. I also taught her how to braid and how to crochet. I was exhausted!

That is wonderful!

Amazing what they can do - when they want to!

That is a beautiful quilt, and Hannah Mae is a cutie patootie! She looks so proud, great work both of you.

Awesome Hannah mae.....

belmer 11-30-2010 09:33 AM

So wonderful of you to spend your time teaching a young one how to sew and knit. Her quilt turned out so well. They really can learn fast at that age.

Mariposa 11-30-2010 09:42 AM

Kudos to you for teaching her! Now you will have a sewing companion! :) Her little quilt is great too!

Maggiesmom 11-30-2010 09:47 AM

What a wonderful way to spend your day! Hannah did a wonderful job!

cherylynne 11-30-2010 11:09 AM

Oh I love being a grandma, too. We are so lucky to have the kids close by. I only have 5 grandsons, so I am hoping for some GD's after my youngest gets married in June. The GS's do sew with me, though.

JEM65 11-30-2010 11:19 AM

Yolanda, she is beautiful! Her quilt is an awesome accomplishment! I'll bet you had the best time with her this weekend and that you are tired out!

champagnebubbles 11-30-2010 11:24 AM

Hannah, that is awesome and so are you!!

needles3thread 11-30-2010 12:19 PM

How nice to have a granddaughter that you can
quilt with. Great

mhansen6 11-30-2010 12:24 PM

I think you are great. You are teaching your granddaughter something she will treasure all her life. Hopefully when she sews she will remember her wonderful Grandmother. I hope someday I will be able to teach my granddaughter to sew. I know my daughters were never interested.

You may have been exhausted but you will reap the rewards of that "together" time. I can't wait until my DGD is old enough so I can show her quilting. She is only just two and won't sit still for love nor money right now. haha. Your GD did a great job and look at the happy, proud, smiley face of hers!!

Good for you!!! And your DGD too. I love to sew with my Grandgirls, 3 of them from 6 to 12. The 9 year old seems to have the most interest. Now if I could just get her mother's cooperation.... Don't get to see them much even though they only live 8 minutes from me.

dunster 11-30-2010 01:39 PM

What a cutie. She's lucky to have you to teach her so much. She looks thrilled!

amma 11-30-2010 01:44 PM

Awww what a sweetie!! Her quilt is beautiful!! :D:D:D

MaRanda 11-30-2010 03:35 PM

What a darling little girl. She looks as proud as a peacock! The both of you should be proud. What a darling first project!! Thanks for helping another quilter get started! :)

DJ 11-30-2010 03:56 PM

It's so much fun seeing the youngsters get interested in sewing. And look at her gleaming face! Nice job!

Matilda 11-30-2010 04:32 PM

She did a great job!

DoxieMom 11-30-2010 04:36 PM

How very nice! Lucky girl and lucky you!!!

ljsunflower 11-30-2010 04:45 PM

WOW! That young lady did very well. But you do know it's addictive, don't you? And if she gets hooked this early, the fabric stores are gonna get a lot of money off of you, her & her mama. LOL

reach for the stars 2 11-30-2010 05:14 PM

A quilter in the making, it's a beauty

TexasSunshine 11-30-2010 05:29 PM

Very nice. My older Pfaff has a feature, Sew Slow, that I put on when my GD sews with me. That keeps her from going to fast.

daisey 11-30-2010 05:32 PM

Shes so cute and so is her quilting!

Babs194068 12-01-2010 02:54 AM

Hannah you did a great job. Keep it up.

mamaw 12-01-2010 04:38 AM

It is so nice to see little quilters learning to carry on the tradition. She is so cute and looks so proud of her accomplishment. How nice that she will have the memories of you teaching her also. My Grammie taught me how to do basic knitting when I was 9; and my first project was a pair of slippers. Unfortunately, I don't take the time to carry it on.

I am sure you were exhausted but she will never forget that day. You painted beautiful memories for her.

I worked with my 4 year old grandson 6 months ago letting him work the "gas pedal" (he is extremely mechanically inclined) and "we" made him a John Deere apron. He can hardly wait til Grandpa and I return to visit so we can sew.

Your Granddaughter is very sweet!

mame13 12-01-2010 04:49 AM

Beautiful girl, and her quilt is lovely. I just love it when I see the younger girls (and boys) interested in quilting or any kind of crafts. They're the ones who will fill our shoes after we are no longer able to do these things.
Keep it up Hannah. My 9 year old GD loves to quilt also and I'm so proud of her.

#1piecemaker 12-01-2010 05:23 AM
