I made this purse for my future daugther in law. My son turned up his nose at the fabric I used. Now I do not know whether to give it to her or make another one. What do you think?

I like it very much. I dont think men have an eye for fashion etc.
What do boys know? LOL. I like it.
I would make another one and let her choose. My husband and my taste are completely different. If it needs a home I'll be happy to give it a loving and caring one. :)
I like it too.

I don't know your DIL's tastes...so its hard to say. How old is your DIL?
I personally wouldn't use that fabric for a purse, but my tastes lie more in solids/tonals/marbles and less with themes and novelty prints for something I'm going to carry around every day - I like batiks for purses. I love the fabric you chose for the liner, though! I'd be more likely to use that. |
If you are not feeling good about it I would make another one.
The purse is lovely......but if you are not sure....trust your gut feelings. You could let future DIL pick out the fabric and make another one?
The bag is great! A very busy & interesting print for the outside-nicely done!
I know where you are comming from, you want it to be a surprise! If you felt good about it before your son "turned up his nose" then give it to her. Just watch her reaction, and tell her if she does not care for it you will trade and let her pick the fabric for another and use that one yourself or sell it here!
ps I love it!I dislike being what I call a clone, I love the unusual and diffrent! |
I think it is really neat. What do men know?
Personally, I like it. Anything that someone makes me, even though at times it not quite my tastes, I love it because they took the time to make it for ME!!! Go with your gut!

really- what do men know
First, let me say this is a great purse, very well made, and unique fabric choice!
But it's all a matter of HER personal taste. I know my MIL has given me things that she likes and are very fashionable, but are obviously not my taste. If this purse fits her personality, then go for it and give it to her. If you think it doesn't fit her style, make another (if you have time) and let her choose. If you want to be sure, next time give the person fabric choices before you start, then you won't have this heart ache later. Let us know what you decide to do! |
How often do you see the girl? Could you use scraps of the fabric and make some random blocks.... casually show them to her like you're going to make a quilt ... and get her reaction? I have a co-worker who was making another co-worker a "mommy" quilt for her baby shower. She brought the fabric in the office and left it out for the new "mommy" to get a glance. From her reaction, she knew the choice was right. The new mom had no idea at the time that the quilt would be given to her.
BTW... I love the purse... and don't think you should take your son's comment to heart to much. I'm with the crowd... what do boys know? lol |
I would give it to her, very nice.
I think I would let her see the purse saying it was for someone else then get her opinion on what she thinks of the fabric. If she likes it great if not find out what she would like if it was for her. Or you could wrap it and give it with a note saying it is a prototype and you will go together to choose fabric after Xmas. I love yor purse!
It is so hard to make a surprise if you dont know the person's taste. It sounds like you really want her to like it and if she has hinted that she would like you to make a purse for her, she wants to like it too.
Both of you will be sad if you give it to her and she doesnt like it. When she dropped that hint, what sort of fabrics had she seen you work with? I think I would ask her to say what sort of fabric she would like. Bringing her to the fabric shop sounds good- you could even show her this fabric without identifying it? |
I love it!
What do you think the DIL will think of it? If you think she will like it then she probably will. Guys don't carry purses so how does he know? It is cute and will be a conversation piece.

I really like it!
I say make another one and give them both to her. The honest truth here is that you know her and we don't so for us to give an opinion is kind of hard. I think the bag is cute!!
I like it, it's a fun fabric.
i notice the "guys" aren't stepping foot on this one...
LOL---gotta go w/ the crowd--what do they know??? |
I would give it to her. Im sure she will love it because you made it for her.
He's not the one using it. Give it to her and tell her if she really doesn't like the fabric you can make her another one with fabric she likes.

Charlene, the purse you made is beautiful and looks very well made. I am sure your to-be DIL will love it. Perhaps your son that made the comment didn't realize the power his words spoke to you. Please don't let it trip you up. You thought about her when you picked the fabric and made the purse. I am sure she will be quite pleased.
:-D |
she will love it. Men are grumps. Don't listen to them.
I think it is cute! I like it.
I am sneaky sometimes and leave some material laying around or start discussing fabrics with who I want to make something for and that way I find out what they like. Some I know, others it's hard. I'd probably play the 'I don't know if I really like this one' game with her.

I like it too but I agree with several of the others - make a second one and let her pick. If she can't pick between the 2 then you have a gift for now AND a gift for Christmas!
Give it to her! My son said his wife has too many purses and didn't need another. I figured she likes purses and could always use one more. She loves the one I made her. Men just don't get it.
