Thank you all. I am glad my reflexes still work at the age of 70 lol.

nana pat 01-10-2011 08:06 PM

You are an awesome repairererer! I cant even see the patching. Love your work.

SueDor 01-11-2011 02:40 AM

You were lucky that you were paying attention. You did a great job fixing it.

jackied 01-11-2011 02:44 AM

Well, that sounds like something I might do, but haven't. So glad it wasn't any worse than that!

rootyr 01-11-2011 03:27 AM

Oh no! A lesson to be learned!

I should know better, anyway, I lit a nice peach candle a friend gave me for Christmas in the studio where the children live (the doggies). And needing to blame someone, hubby is one who told me to do it ahahhaahha

Anyway I started to work on my quilts. I did have a large space to work on and didn't think the candle posed a problem, even tho my mind said to blow it out.

I remember flinging the quilt top to start working on one side, when I thought I saw a flash of light. I was going to ingnore it but decided to look and there was my quilt on fire....

I quickly beat it out, thank God it had just caught and it wasn't bad.

Nice repair job. Glad to know you there was not further damage and that you were not injured.

Panther Creek Quilting 01-11-2011 04:53 AM

Holy Moly! Glad you saw it when it started and glad that you can reapir it!

kclausing 01-11-2011 04:57 AM

Good thing it waqs only the quilt. Had the same issue in my daughter's bedroom once and the result was worse then justa burned blanket. luckily no one was hurt. needless ot say we don't burn candles anymore, we just use those warmer things.

ranger 01-11-2011 04:58 AM

I'm glad things weren't a lot worse. It's scary how easily a fire can start.

During the holiday season, our local TV station was giving out warnings. Firefighters had a lot of call-outs for fires that started from candles.

#1piecemaker 01-11-2011 05:24 AM

Oh,, no! that's awful. But, so glad you could "fix" it. You bounced right back after such a catastrophe. Way to go!

Stitchnripper 01-11-2011 05:42 AM

Wow, you were lucky on so many levels! Nice repair job.

Becky Crafts 01-11-2011 05:44 AM

So glad you caught it quickly & were able to repair it! It's a lovely quilt! Good job!

Grandma Peg 01-11-2011 06:21 AM

Things happen so fast. Glad you were able to get it out quickly.

DebbyT 01-11-2011 06:40 AM

The first Quilt I made was a Polyester double knit 5"square patchwork, backed with a sheet blanket. 35 yrs ago. It has been rebacked twice and needs it again, used to put a fire out about 10 years ago. I made it for my daughter and she has slept with it for the past 35 yrs. Even takes it when she travels. -- A candle was knocked down near the bed and her husband was burned slightly. She put out the small fire with her blanket. It is surviving with about 6 small melted spots.

sandpat 01-11-2011 06:43 AM

Thank goodness you saw that "flash of light"! This could have been a really bad scene!! Great save for you though

So glad all worked out good and you done a beautiful job saving your quilt.

Exactly my thought, too! I chuckled when I saw the heading and a particular UFO came into mind instantly. Hadn't considered putting it alight, but I won't rule it out as an option!

shopaholic97 01-11-2011 07:04 AM

I am so happy that you diverted a disaster. Great job on fixing it

Dortha 01-11-2011 07:10 AM

Carol Carter 01-11-2011 07:11 AM

Scary...I guess we all need to get rid of the candles. I put a Scentsy in my sewing room.

Sandra-P 01-11-2011 07:12 AM

That was one hot quilt! Glad you were able to put out the flames and fix it.

nwm50 01-11-2011 07:21 AM

Tweety2911 01-11-2011 10:50 AM

Peggyinno 01-11-2011 11:09 AM

My heart sank for you, until I saw that you had it all fixed! Whew!

OKLAHOMA PEACH 01-11-2011 11:12 AM

Looks like fabric will burn, I wondered if making candle mats was a mistake.

penski 01-11-2011 11:13 AM

om goodness glad you were there to see it and not in another room when it caught fire !!

Rosyhf 01-11-2011 11:22 AM

I think, things happen for a reason. And when something like this gets my attention, I am a renewed person lol and I will definately be more observant for it now.

I love the quilt more now, it's already made history lol. I am making an extention for it now, the part that will go over the pillow. For those who haven't seen the almost finished quilt, here is the link. I am posting the extention now.

Oh my word. Glad you were able to fix it. I've set my hair on fire a couple times, and duct tape too (which slags but doesn't really burn well..) but I've never set a quilt on fire! Whoo hoo! I use a candle warmer electric plate, a jar candle and set it on top of a bookcase away from the sew area. Nice smell... no smoke or ash getting on the fabrics... maybe invest in one? Joanns or Michaels, use a 40% off coupon... lol.

Renewed yes... and beautiful. Lovely picture of you as your avatar! I go to see the quilt!

IBQUILTIN 01-11-2011 11:38 AM

So glad the damage was reparable. Nice warning to be careful of candles

vivoaks 01-11-2011 01:24 PM

Actually, I just burned a hole in a BOM I'm working on from my LQS! I'd had a candle burning next to my sewing machine, working on tiny sewing....figured I'd blow out the candle when I started to work on the BOM block. I forgot, and the next thing I know, there's smoke coming up next to me! Now I have to re-do that block...

Marvel 01-11-2011 01:34 PM

You have just established a way for us to learn how to make vital repairs in place of giving up. It turned out very good. One woulf never know. . Marvel
