Helen's Disappearing Hourglass

1 Attachment(s)
I see a few of us have made this pattern. It was so much fun to make and I hope to make a few more in the future. Not sure if I want to do FMQ or use a panto. It will go on the quilting pile for now. Thanks for looking :)

Beautiful Helen! Which method did you use to make your blocks? There's been some discussion about frustration by using the MSQC tutorial. I've made their disappearing pinwheel and it went pretty well.

sandyfullmer 09-01-2014 04:33 PM

Very nice colors in your quilt!

Deb watkins 09-01-2014 04:37 PM

I am waiting for more answers to this....seems some are having a lot of difficulty with this while others are doing just fine.

PenniF 09-01-2014 04:38 PM

Great color combo !!! Really pretty.
I'm with you.... i LOVE this block. I feel so bad when i hear folks talking about how they don't like it or how hard it was because of the bias edges......i have to say - i had no trouble and will be making this a few more times in different colors.
My next one - i am going to try a scrappy - once i have made all the blocks and cut them into the 9 pieces - going to put the same pieces from each block in a separate bag and pull them out and to a scrappy scrappy - don't know how it will turn out, but i'm curious to find out.
Thanks for sharing your DHG !!!!

very pretty

lfstamper 09-01-2014 05:12 PM

Nicely done - was wondering which method you used too since others have said MSQC was frustrating.

alikat110 09-01-2014 05:31 PM

This is sew pretty!

katier825 09-01-2014 05:32 PM

That's pretty. I want to make one and did do a sample block a couple of weeks ago using the method on the video. I HATE working with the bias (even starched) and so glad I did not cut out an entire quilt that way! I will take the time to figure out the 1/2 square triangle sizes and make it that way.

Tartan 09-01-2014 05:39 PM

Great quilt! I did not have any trouble working with the bias edges as in my 12 and 1/2 inch block tutorial but if bias edges are not your thing...Paperprincess posted a chart of sizes for starting with half square triangles on the straight of grain. This pattern is simply too neat not to try!

So pretty, I would love to know how to make one.

I used the MSQC tutorial and loved it, very easy to follow! For the sections that I didn't get the exact size cut the bias edges helped when sewing the sections together. I definitely will make this again. PenniF I look forward to seeing yours. Scrappy's are my favorite quilts!

a very striking quilt.. nice

Do any of you get "The Missouri Star" quilt magazine called "Block" ? In issue 4 she gives directions on making this block. There are very good directions with lots of pics and graphs. I think you could learn more from it, than the video.

Bobbielinks 09-02-2014 05:28 AM

Love it!! so much so that I pulled out some blue and yellow scraps and stitched some blocks together just to see if I could do it. They came out very well. I started with a 9 1/2 inch square since that was the size of my smaller pieces, squared it to 12 inches before cutting the nine patch pieces. It's looking good and so easy to do following Missouri Star Quilt's directions.

Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company has a You Tube video of it and I believe you can get it in her "Block" magazine...issue 4. I don't have my magazine yet, so don't know.

luvstoquilt301 09-03-2014 07:20 AM

Mine came out a little wonky so I just squared it up to 12. Not very seam butted up perfectly when sewing the blocks together. I am not so picky about things like that. Across the room it looks fabulous. I found it very easy and used lots of starch.

nwm50 09-03-2014 07:39 AM

It's on my to do list but yours is lovely!!

debcavan 09-03-2014 08:39 AM
