Help dating these unfinished quilts
Hello, I'm not sure where the appropriate place to post this would be, but I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of when they where made and maybe the name of the pattern.
There are close-ups of each fabric used. I have a feeling someone will recognize the era right away. Thank you. |
From what I can tell , they look like square within a square blocks, probably from the 1980's.
|
I was thinking 80's-90's also, tho they have a few vintage pieces thrown in. And definitely square-in-square, alternated with solid squares.
|
I'm going to disagree, I think they are much older. I've been quilting since 1978, I don't recognize any of those fabrics. I would say early 1900's.
|
The problem is the fabric makers started making the reproduction fabrics of the old prints for civil war quilts. I am thinking only carbon dating would be the way to know for sure. LOL!

A wedding gift
Early 1900's fits with it's provenance, which is that it was a wedding gift to my great great grandmother.
Neither of the quilt fronts are finished, no backing, no padding. What's the popular opinion on finishing them? Or would it be best to leave them as they are? I'd love to see them as actual quilt blankets, stored nicely of course. If finishing isn't a total sacrilege, where would I find suitable fabric for the backing? Thank you |
I think you have the answer. When was your g g grandmother married?
|
I too was going to go with 1890 - 1910. Unbleached muslin was a popular option for quilt backing in the period. If you decide to have them quilted, be careful. Some of the fabrics may have deteriorated with age and won't stand up to laundering. Thanks for sharing!
