I remember reading somewhere to keep the thread in the fridge overnite b4 sewing. Have never tried it tho.

I just watched a DVD from Superior Threads last week that addressed this issue. Anyone wanting to machine stitch with metallics, buy it on the cone, not the spool. The cone is wound on a larger base and is not wound as tight. To check and see if a metallic is going to sew well - unwind about 3 ft, hold one end in each hand and let it hang between your hands, if the thread twist you will have alot of problems with it because it will twist as it travels through the machine guides and into the tensioner. If it hangs loose it should stitch just fine. Superior has really good thread, there are probably others as well. If I really wanted to do a metallic thread I would be willing to pay a little more and not have the frustration of constant breaking. Hope this is helpful.

I have found that machines are finicky and prefer certain brands of metallic thread. I would try a few different ones on a scrap and see which one your machine likes. Hopefully it wont be noticeable if you change to a diff. Metallic on your project. Never heard of running thread Through styrofoam but you may also want to try using one of those gadgets that you put large cones of thread on. Not sure what they're called but they will reduce the drag of the thread. Also, try not threading through the last guide before the thread goes through the needle. Good luck!

Have you checked your bobbin or machine to make sure it's not catching on anything and breaking? Last time I had this problem, it was the bobbin.

Definitely use a 90/14 topstitch needle. A Bernina educator said she puts her metallic thread in a cup on the floor so by the time it gets to the machine it is not twisted anymore. I love Superior Threads metallics!!!

Grammysharon hit it right on the head! Use Superior thread, do not use it in your bobbin, place a coffee cup on the floor and let your thread feed from there and you really need to use TopStitch needles in a size 14. Try this and you shouldn't have anymore problems. Thumbs up Grammysharon!

WOW, what great ideas for sewing with the metalic threads. Let me toss in one more. Instead of a regular 90/14 needle, buy the "metallic" needle in 90/14. The needle is much larger, the groove above the needle is deep to help guide the thread into the needle correctly. Add that to the other fantastic suggestion and you'll be home free.

Your quilt is wonderful. I love the use of the metalic thread around the paisley. It is just beautiful and will be such a treasure when finished. Good for you for doing something so wonderful for yourself.
