Beautiful blocks...what if you did N-S-E-W...you know in a 4patch variation with every heart pointing in a different direction.

I like the second one, but could you take a picture with 4 blocks all pointed in the center and see what that looks like.

Here is another thought, just trying to help. Not sure it would look good or not. You could try to arrange the blocks like this: First row starting at first block, ect heart point down, then 2nd block heart point to the left then 3rd block heart point down then 4th block heart block to left. Then on 2nd row start with heart point to the right, then heart point up, then heart point to right, then point up.
