Thanks everyone!!!!! :D I found some black fabric with different colored chickens on it the other day and went ahead and got it. I couldnt find the color of chicken wire fabric I wanted. (I had used some in the quilt that was tan with brown wire that I really would have liked for the borders) I was afraid the lighter colors would just fall away. So I will play with this black and see what it will look like. :D

Keep us posted. I love that quilt!

i LOVE YOUR CHICKENS!! vERY AHPPLY QUILT. YOU DID A GOOD JOB INSPITE OF YOUR ALLERGIES.
i DID A CHICKEN LITTLE QUILT A FEW YEARS BACK WITH A LARGE CHICKEN IN THE CENTER AND THE REST WAS MADE UP FROM A PANEL I WILL SEE IF I CAN FIND THE PIC. IT WAS RED, YELLOW AND BLACK CHECKS AND DOTS. IT IS NOW IN MY GRANSDSON'S POSSESSION.

JoanneS 03-06-2009 07:42 PM

This quilt makes me SMILE! I think a tiny inner border (maybe finishing 1 inch) of that gorgeous turquoise blue you've used in several of the blocks would be a great highlight, and then I'd do the chicken foot print thing someone else mentioned with all the leftovers on chicken wire fabric if you can find it. I'm eager to see what you decide to do!

black is good. it makes everything pop, and has chickens.
Before that I was thinking of maybe a large checkerboard type border that resembled chicken wire, but this would certainly be less work. Oh, if you had some more of those little eggs with the feet for the corners. They are sooo cute. I think everybody is in love with this one.
I want to do something similar, but i don't collect chickens, maybe whimsical kitty cats for my daughter. I should do one with bugs for Anna. That little girl is going to be an entomologist. She befriends and names all creepy crawlies. I should take her to visit terri in the jungle. (terri of the jungle...how cute!)

I'm still checking to see if you've posted the borders yet. I'm going to have to add to my chicken fabric before I can get started on mine. I do have a few...but not nearly enough yet. I have a stack of patterns and I plan to look for several more of those also. I'm thinking of looking at more clip art...I love to use those. So.....hows it coming???

LindaR 03-07-2009 07:09 AM

I just love it....was it a BOM?

mgshaw 03-07-2009 07:15 AM

How's it coming? Well, the only thing I got done this week was cutting the borders! I was hoping to get to sew today but I was informed last night that I would have to be mechanics helper today while DH works on the big tractor! So probably no sewing again!!!!! GRRRR!!!! :x

gaillynne 03-07-2009 04:13 PM

Now that's my kind of quilt! I love applique and especially love a quilt that is not just the same pattern over and over again. So much personality and great variety of style and color. You should be proud. It is wonderful. :P

Oh pooh...I know all about being the mechanics helper..I don't care for that job..but do it gladly and with a smile on my face! The weather today was too nice to be inside sewing anyway...maybe storms tomorrow...I'll keep checking on you...I can't wait to see!

Mousie 03-07-2009 05:28 PM

well, patti and mgshaw, I applaud you both for helping with a job you'd rather not be doing.
Me and hubby have a deal. I am not mechanically inclined...I know, I could just stand there and hand him tools...been there, tried that...he yells, so I don't 'help', he doesn't 'sew'...and we don't fight, lol! :D

mgshaw 03-07-2009 05:48 PM

our arrangement is more like, I will help you if you promise not to help me!!!

Mousie 03-07-2009 06:49 PM

   good idea

vicki reno 03-07-2009 06:53 PM

I love it and am green with envy  . I have had very little time to sew since the BIG move. Too busy unpacking and organizing and since it warmed up gardening too! But your quilt is really cute. Good job!

Marcia 03-07-2009 11:55 PM

Melissa-I am checking in on you today too. Was hoping for some pics with borders. Sorry you have not had much time to sew lately. I can relate!!

Crissie 03-09-2009 10:40 AM

I hope you post again when your borders are on~ I love your chickens, I've been collection for a long time and even took a work shop September 2003 from Carroll Griffiths, she use to live in Modesto, CA. but moved ... That was such a great class too. At the top of her quilt she has the sun looking down on her childens. If your interested in seeing the photo let me know... it's fun~

Congratulations - I think your border looks great. With all the suggestions you received, it could have been hard to make the decision!

It really was hard!! I loved the appliqued chicken track idea. I even went as far as trying to find a pattern. But I think I was just ready to be done with this one!!

Shadow Dancer 03-09-2009 11:26 AM

It's perfect!! :)

Janstar 03-09-2009 11:39 AM

Marcia 03-09-2009 02:13 PM

Love it, love it!!! You are going to have to teach me how to do a "simple" mitered border! It looks great..perfect frame for your quilt. Now.....have you decided how you are going to quilt it?????

mgshaw 03-09-2009 03:29 PM

No idea what-so-ever Marcia!!!!! :D It will probably set in the pile with the other tops waiting to be quilted for a good while!!!!

Jim's Gem 03-09-2009 03:34 PM

Looks great. I love the borders! Yea, I can never decide how I want to quilt a lot of my quilts too. That's why at the moment I have 8 or 9 or so sandwiched just waiting for the quilting!!

beachlady 03-09-2009 03:34 PM

Love it Melissa! Where did you find all the different chicken/rooster fabrics?

Marcia sent me some that she had left from her quilt and then I got a bunch on line. I cant think right off hand what site it was, but they had bunches of chicken fabric. They also had FQ bundles of chicken fabric. I will look around and see if I can find the site. I think I found it through the Fabshophop fabric search!

sandpat 03-09-2009 03:44 PM

I seriously love this quilt! I like your "lazy" way out tooo....it worked and worked out well! You are making my fingers itch to get started...I think I need to pay the taxes though before I go on another fabric shopping spree

Thanks so much for sharing it with us though..I always love your work!

Patti

mgshaw 03-09-2009 04:00 PM

Melissa,
This would seriously look
wonderful on my dining
room wall. It would keep
all my roosters and hens
company. lol
Sure turned out pretty!

pocoellie 03-09-2009 04:04 PM

That is soooo cute!!!

pennyswings 03-09-2009 04:10 PM

MG:
Love what you did for the border and your comment about taking the lazy way out gave me a chuckle :-) .
Love the dark border it pops the inside of the quilt. After all the applique work you did on the squares anything else would have been too busy.
I just love this quilt, again great job!!
Penny
