Good morning everyone! I'm going to try to make a baby quilt for my sister who is going to have a little girl in November. Here are the fun fabrics that I have. Any suggestions on what kind of pattern I should do? I think I may end up back at the fabric store to get either another white or pink fabric so that I can be sure to separate the busier patterns.
Thanks!!

jdiane318 09-09-2011 06:06 AM

I would do a disappearing 9-patch using all the fabrics. What a great variety of colors and patterns. You could also make a strip tube quilt and that would really showcase your fabrics, too.

LoisN 09-09-2011 06:25 AM

You could use the fabric pictured in the lower left as a center panel and use the others as borders.

Julie in NM 09-09-2011 06:28 AM

so cute! I suggest get a rosey purpleor hotter pink and then to D9P.

sock_17 09-09-2011 06:45 AM

Thanks :-)

I'm scared of the disappearing 9 patch. I tried to do it one but chickened out lol.

at first I thought that I was going to use the lower left fabric for the back but and just do blocks but then I got worried that when it came time to quilt, my blocks wouldn't line up with the blocks printed on that fabric and then it would look bad.

COYOTEMAGIC 09-09-2011 06:51 AM

Yup, I'm with everybodyelse disappearin 9 patch. Love the fabrics!!

scisyb220 09-09-2011 07:17 AM

Have you seen that Anita Grossman Solomon pattern that uses 3 one yard pieces of fabric to make 3 quilts of an elongated 9 patch? It is available online with the cutting instructions, clear pictures showing how to align for cutting and the sewing is very easy, just 6 seams!!! I've done a couple for baby quilts this year and they go together really fast!! Plus you can improvise the quilting when you sandwich it & it looks so cute! Check it out. I think it was called 3 yards, 3 baby quilts and it might be at the Quiltmaker magazine website. I mean it is really adorable & very fast & easy!

PS Stitcher 09-09-2011 07:25 AM

Oh those are so cute!! I think that a D9P would be great with them.

grendelskin 09-09-2011 07:56 AM

Rail Fence would be darling with these pretties.

irishrose 09-09-2011 07:59 AM

D9P would be great. I'd get a very strong pink to fuchsia solid or blender for the center block. That's the one the ends up as the small squares. You won't need much.

Xstitshmom 09-09-2011 08:59 AM

Where did you find the pink elephant fabric -- it's adorable!

sock_17 09-09-2011 09:49 AM

All of the fabric came from my local Jo Ann's :-) That's not a very good pic because I took it with my junky phone but there is also a little green bird by a few of the elephants.

The 3 yard, 3 blanket thing sounds pretty cool. I'll have to check it out.

QUILTNMO 09-09-2011 09:51 AM

WELL IF YOU AFARID TO CUT INTO GOOD FABRIC TAKE OLD FABRIC AND MUSLIN PRATCIE THEN CUT INTO GOOD FABRIC GO FOR IT

sock_17 09-09-2011 10:18 AM

If I do the DP9, how big should I make the blocks? (before I turn them into the 9 patch) I want to make sure that the patterns still come through.

MrsGuava 09-09-2011 10:33 AM

Are those SKULL and BONES on the upper left? No way.

I think a pinwheel would be adorable, and half square triangles are so easy!

Here are a few examples from google images...

Oh, oh, oh, or how about a zig zag...there is a wonderful tutorial here (without having to make half square triangles)

Again...a picture from google images...

sock_17 09-09-2011 11:14 AM

Yep, but they are girly skulls LMAO. My sister has a pretty good sense of humor when it comes to stuff like that. She's a huge Nightmare before Christmas fan.

sock_17 09-09-2011 11:16 AM

Those zig zags are fun!! I'll check out the tutorial.

Oh, yes they are.

IHO, if you purchase additional fabric you should consider getting at least one coordinating deeper color solid or blender for contrast.

sock_17 09-09-2011 11:23 AM

yeah, I think I do need to go and another fabric to go with these.

Fabricnut 09-09-2011 11:32 AM

I love your fabrics. Are they flannel? I want to try a disappearing 9 patch soon. By the way I also like your avatiar picture. If you need more John Deere fabric sometime let me know. I have a lot left over from my husband's quilt.

sock_17 09-09-2011 11:42 AM

Yep, they are all flannel. My avatiar is the first quilt I ever made (for my kiddo) I made another one like it (but a little smaller) for my cousin. Lately I've only made a few scrub hats and a purse. I'm excited to make another quilt and you guys have all been so helpful!!

sock_17 09-09-2011 12:32 PM

Now becasue I'm searching images on google I'm starting to think a rag quilt might be fun. Have any of you made one of these before?. . . . There are way too many options out there for quilts lol.

Nettie Phillips 09-09-2011 06:35 PM

Cute fabric.

Shirlrh 09-10-2011 04:51 AM

Very pretty. D9P would be great with those fabrics.

Annz 09-10-2011 07:34 AM

I bet a 9p would look nice.

munchkinmama 09-10-2011 07:51 AM

I also would do a disappearing nine patch. I would get a solid pink for the center square, use the upper right for the middle squares and the other four in the corners.

jean1234 09-10-2011 08:05 AM

 I would make some 3x8 blocks. sew them together in threes.... Jean   :D

katier825 09-10-2011 09:41 AM

Slide show is a great pattern. Here's one I did.

vondae 09-10-2011 11:38 AM

You can access the Anita Grossman Solomam pattern by searching here on the Board. She sent me the link the other day. Whatever you do will be wonderful because Auntie made it. How wonderful, another member of the family, and babies are so sweet.

teacherbailey 09-10-2011 12:08 PM

I vote for a Trip Around the World....so you don't have to cut these cute fabrics in too-small pieces!

Halo 09-10-2011 04:43 PM

These fabrics would make a great rag quilt & would be warm & soft with it being flannel. Rag quilts are very easy to make & you can cut the squares any size you like. I have made lots of the & they are loved by everyone that got them. I also do rag quilts with denim & fleece.

Don't do a rag quilt for a baby (that's what I've read before).

Pinwheels would be a really cute baby quilt with your fabrics and maybe a fabric that's more of a solid that would tie them all together.

frog54 09-10-2011 06:50 PM

Love the fabrics My favorite is the owls

Latrinka 09-10-2011 07:03 PM

all of the fabrics are so cute, I'm sure whatever you decide will be precious! Just make sure you let us see!

makin 09-10-2011 09:09 PM

Good quilt is the Kaye Wood 6-hour quilt. It's a very fast and easy QAYG.

Kitsapquilter 09-10-2011 09:49 PM

Personally, I would not use the top left fabric with the other pink fabrics but maybe use it as backing....maybe! Maybe use it in another quilt for the same baby!! The other fabrics are wonderful together though and you could well use another more solid or tone on tone with them.

Start with 5" blocks. The 9 patch will seem huge but when you cut it down and sew it back together it will end up about 12 1/2" square. You could do a 10 min block too. They are cute. Just make the starting squares smaller than the 10" size blocks Suzanne uses in the video. Here is the link to the directions. I made a twin size one of these in less than 4 hours. That included the time to cut the blocks and I machine quilted it too.
Good luck...crafty_linda_b sittin' & quiltin' on the Cal-Ore border
