I checked out a couple of sites last night for Gmarie, who was looking for instructions, so I thought why not - lets have a go myself!!

I found a fairly good tutorial on www.bobrow.net, click on kimberleys webpage and go to her quilting page, then to all night tutorial

Heres a couple of pictures, my fabric choice wasn't so good, as it was only a practice piece. :D

patricej 04-26-2008 02:33 AM

whatchoo talkin' about, willis? the fabric choices are just fine. the block is a 5-thumbs-up, at least. :P

tlrnhi 04-26-2008 03:08 AM

I love it!
It's bright and I love it!
What can I say??

Izy 04-26-2008 03:08 AM

Thanks Patrice, I think a bolder print which would show the effect would have been better, but this is only the beginning....... :D

barnbum 04-26-2008 03:46 AM

That's an awesome job!! The back is as nice as the front--you know what I mean. The colors are fine too!!

sandpat 04-26-2008 04:40 AM

I see nothing wrong, in fact, I think ya' done good :D

bj 04-26-2008 05:41 AM

Great block and fabric. I like the kaleidoscope effect of the center. You did a really good job of fussy cutting to get the right effect!

lin 04-26-2008 05:44 AM

I think it's wonderful! I love the fabric and the design in the center.

nanabirdmo 04-26-2008 07:28 AM

This is not so hard bg - heres how I did it

Start by finding a fabric that has an obvious pattern repeat of about 8-10".

I didn't want to 'waste' fabric so I used my 6" square ruler and positioned the centre exactly over the same focus point in the fabric repeat and cut it out eight times.

(If you have any clear plastic square you can use it, I only have the 6")

(the 'stack n whack' idea is to cut strips across the width and then cut them up into 6" squares but I only wanted a practice go!!)

So I had 4 identical pieces 6" square.

Stick a flat head pin EXACTLY through the fabric to keep all patterns aligned, on each half of the square (out of the way of your rotary cutter).

TURN the bundle over so that the pin sticks straight up, fabric flat on table, perfectly aligned on top of each other, using the pins as guides.

Cut them all in half diagonally -Mind those pointy up pins now!!
(I find when I put pins in horizontally, the fabric shifts out of allignment!!)

This provides enough for two harlequins, one from each pile of triangles.

Cut two 8" squares and cut them in half and 4 rectangles, you need to remember to include the seam allowances for the external edge of the finished block, the amount isnt imperative, I find its better to be generous, as it gives you excess to trim up square at the end!!

Piece together in quarters, then halves etc.

Now to coin an american phrase - Is that as clear as mud??????????? :D :D

Izy: Nothing wrong with your color choices...they are very, very pretty.
Good job and I'm off to Bobrow site to get the pattern. You inspired me to try this block. Thank you.

reneebobby 06-23-2008 08:35 AM

Very nice job

Bevanger 06-23-2008 08:41 AM

I give it a 10..... I actually like the colors. Was that hard to do?

purplemem 06-23-2008 09:02 AM

Wow! Awesome job! I love that block, but, yes, it was as clear as mud.

Maybe due to my headache today, but doesn't seem quite "doable" for me yet.

you did an awesome job-if you are that successful the first time you attempt something new, then you are a VERY talented lady---wait a minute-you are talented even if it takes you several tries. :D I love your fabric choices. Thanks for sharing the tutorial with us!!

This has had a revival....I did it back in April, about 3am if I remember rightly lol!!

If you go to http://www.bobrow.net - click on Kimberley, and look for all night class, you will find a really good tutorial, it really isn't very complicated at all, and the bolder the pattern on the fabric the more you can emphasis the harlequin effect!!

I might do some additional blocks.....then again....will I ever catch up with all I plan to do???????????

Hi Izy:
I'm going through my stash this morning and I have the tutorial all printed out...I MAY have a block in the making really soon! Never having done a Stack & Wack or a Kalaidescope (other than a string-type K-scope) I'm not really sure what fabric prints to use. I bought a mirror that shows how the pattern might look but so far I'm not thrilled with any of the fabric I've pulled...have another 13 tubs to go through so I'm bound to find something!

Izy 06-29-2008 05:38 AM

Hey Good on ya Feathers...From what I could gather the bolder the pattern the more effect you get!!#

And don't forget you can turn your triangles both ways so can get a completely different look from the same set of triangles!! :D

Wow! Izy, thanks for the tip on turning the triangles. I would have probably seen that after they were cut but glad to have it in mind prior to cutting.

I just dug out my magic Quilt Block Design Mirrors ...that should help give me some idea of how my pattern is going to look.

Izy 06-29-2008 06:55 AM

Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Barb M 06-29-2008 02:58 PM

Izy, did you cut your squares 6"'s, and then into triangles? Or were they 6 1/2"'s. What size finished block did you end up with, im trying to do one :) I'm wondering cus i have another pattern here that uses 4 1/2' squares, and it makes a 6' finished block, so trying to decide what size yours would come out so i can decide lol silly me lol :) Here is my other pattern:

Barb M 06-29-2008 03:43 PM

It's ok, my silly lil brain has decided to use the 6" pattern i have :)

Barb - I used a metric equivalent so they were just under 6" square cut, then cut diagonally into two triangles...but remember you need to get exactly the same part of the pattern four times, to give a true kaleidescope effect by selecting identicle pattern repeats - did you check out the bobrow website?, it gives you great instructions.... :D

Barb M 06-30-2008 10:59 AM

Thanks Izy, yes, i wasn't able to understand her instructiions, silly me lol, so im gonna try my windmill pattern. :)
