So , here we go. This is INTUITION. It is my second quilt and my first handmade and hand quilted. It started out as almost a goof. Something to do with my hands while I watch tv. At first I thought how difficult could it be to sew six little hexagons together?.. Afterall, I've never taken a quilting class. Then all kinds of issues arose. Should the hexagons be alike within a flower? Intuiton said yes. How to sew it? Intuition said fuse to freezer paper the sew with tiny stitches. Then how to join them? Intuition said white on black print. After that the quilt took on a voice of its own and it got more difficult to hear. It took two years to decide how to quilt it and to work up the courage. The black and white is quilted with white thread and the 'flowers' are each quilted with a matching color.

Izy 06-10-2008 05:59 PM

That is purely perfect, and it's in my sorta colours I LOVE brights at the moment as I am working with them too at the moment, you have done a beautiful job and how you fussy cut the patterns out makes it look extra special, like the harlequin affect - fantastic job

Nina 06-10-2008 06:15 PM

So beautiful! I haven't had the courage to try a hexagon yet - You make it look so effortless!

Grandma Cindy 06-10-2008 07:10 PM

I am so glad you got new batteries in those hearing aides, because that quilt of yours was diffinitely speaking to you. Simply amazing! What is the finished size?

Moonpi 06-10-2008 07:27 PM

I love, Love, LOVE those fussy cuts! It's wonderful!

The writing on your avatar is too tiny to read - what's it say?

houstonjudy 06-10-2008 07:45 PM

a/It wasn't difficult. Just tedious.
b/The avatar says: "Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom and a little Flower." It was a tribute to Flower a meerkat on Meerkat Manor.
c/ it's about 48" by 50". Each hexagon is 1.5 " at the parallel sides.
Thank you all for the compliments.

houstonjudy: Love your quilt -- it's so beautiful I have to say I too mourn the death of Flower, Mozart, Carlos and so many of our dear meerkat friends. Such adorable creatures -- I have the series on TVO.

I really like your quilt ! I like it that you chose a black background  Black really makes the colors pop . Several years ago I made a crocheted Grandma's flowere garden quilt { hexagons } Several people eww black , I don't like black ! I thought it came out real pretty . Annie

Congratulations on a beautiful quilt :!:

ksusan 06-12-2008 12:01 PM

Outstanding creation with fussy cutting, color and overall composition.
I did a mod hexagon years ago, and am still in the process of trying to do the hand quilting. WIP is about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way along, but my hands don't allow me to hand quilt for long. The easy part for me was everything except the hand quilting. Your design is marvelous. Thanks for sharing.

Piecefully yours,
Kay Susan

sewsewquilter 06-12-2008 04:47 PM

Beautiful! That quilt has a great voice.

laparshall 06-13-2008 10:34 AM

It reminds me of looking down onto my grandma's flowerbed from the upstairs bedroom window. What a great job you did. The border of the small flowers is such a good idea. It's obvious that you understand "quilt speak".

chairjogger 06-13-2008 10:53 AM

I can not wait to see your quilt ! Did you use those hard plastic templates that you sew together and pop out of fabric??

Chairjogger (Ellen)

Lucky Patsy's 06-13-2008 11:55 PM

That is so cool! I love the irregular border!

kathyd 06-14-2008 03:26 AM

I love the boldness of the quilt. It must have had a very forceful voice. It reminds me of something from the "flower power" era. I just started cutting hexagons for a new quilt. I found a site for free on-line graph paper so I planned the design but not the colors. I want to use up some of my reproduction stash. Wish me luck, it will be hand pieced (I'll be doing the English paper piecing). I know it will take years. I work for a while get bored and put it in a box so it will be a UFO for a while before it gets finished!!!

sandpat 06-14-2008 04:11 AM

Gorgeous quilt! Be sure to let everyone know you are multi-lingual...quiltspeack is a very important language and you understand it very well!

Guess you could also have named the quilt "Tribute to Flower", its sad how they let us get to know all of those delightful characters and then they have to pass away. Its almost like loosing 1 of my own pets!

redrummy 06-14-2008 07:05 AM

my first thought was "WOW" the flowers really pop with the black and white you choose. It is an awesome job. The more I looked at the more I love it, it is beautiful. great job!!!   :XD:

Harmony 06-14-2008 10:04 AM

Wow, using the black was inspired! It really sets off the other beautiful colors in your quilt. It reminds me of those beautiful paperweights with the mille fleur design in the glass. Well done!

kd124 06-16-2008 10:01 PM

This is a stunning quilt! I love the black because it makes the flowers pop. I love the way you did the border as well.

DA Mayer 06-17-2008 04:35 AM

I think your intuition is an artist creating mind. I know artist who will say the painting took over and knew what needed to be done. Awesome work.
