Wow! That is beautiful!

lorli 05-23-2013 04:31 AM

It is beautiful! I love how you arranged the groups of hexies. I was really impressed, then saw that the hexies are tiny! Amazing!
I have been wanting to try one too. I made a couple of hexies from scraps and you're right, it's really fun. Did you see the article in one of the magazines about pieced hexies? I think there is a book too. Looked interesting.

Suze, your tips were great. If you think of any more tips for the rank beginner, please let us know...

Thanks for posting your hexie quilt. Your variety is just delightful! I would not have thought to put the hexies between the white paths. Love it.

lovecreating 05-23-2013 04:54 AM

ooh love it!!!

catladyquilts 05-23-2013 05:00 AM

That is going to be gorgeous, great job, love the prints. Keep up the good work.

stitchinwitch 05-23-2013 05:12 AM

Exquisite!

roadrunr 05-23-2013 05:20 AM

Very beautiful and it is going to be stunning when you are done with it! I would hand quilt it, that would make the quilt even more special!

This is my design. After awhile, I got tired of making the small flower units, but I had been putting them together and had created an odd shaped piece. I decided I wanted to integrate different shaped/sized units, so I drew it up on graph paper and finally came up with what you see. The left hand side and lower left hand corner of the first picture are done. When the rest is done, I haven't decided how to finish it. I am considering appliquéing it to a piece of white fabric and then appliquéing a flower/vine border. I have also considered finishing the edge in colored hexies instead of the plain white that it currently ends in. I would just add an additional row if I did that.
So, really instead of a quilt as you go, it is a design as you go! I have really enjoyed the progress.

What I have learned.
1.Use a fine needle, it is easier to slip through the fabric on the edge without piercing the template.
2. I have decided I like bottom line thread for the piecing, it hides very nicely. I am only using whited thread and I can't see it even on the dark fabrics.
3. I like using the heavier weight cotton hand quilting thread for basting. It seems to hold well, but it's easy to see and get ahold of to remove.
4. Thread Heaven is a must for the fine thread when piecing.
5. When basting, to pierce the template or not...doesn't matter, both work. But, you can reuse the pierced ones several times without issue and that method is easier to un-baste for template removal.
6. Hexies are mischievous and love to escape! When I have basted a bunch, I string them like beads. Before I string them, I sort them so all the pieces for a unit are together. The center, then the 6 for the next ring, 12 for the next and 18 for the next, then start over with the pieces for the next unit. That way as I am assembling a unit I am not digging thru a box of over a hundred hexies looking for the last 'green' one-this would equal a huge mess at my house.
7. Unsewing hexies is not fun, especially when using the fine thread. A normal seam ripper is almost useless. I have found the best tool is a super sharp knife with a pointy tip. I like my SpiderCo Honey Bee for this.

I'm sure there are other things, but that is all that is coming to me off the top of my head.

I absolutely love this! AND thank you so much for all of your tips! I have done small pieces in the past (small flower to appliqué on pieced quilt, etc. ) and just the other day bought several packages of 3/4" pieces to get started on a project. I honestly suggest you send to a long arm for quilting. It sounds like you haven't quilted much in the past and this would NOT be the quilt to learn on with all of its seams. Besides, you will be able to use/appreciate it much sooner! Just my HO. It is so gorgeous!

cpcarolyn 05-23-2013 06:04 AM

Great quilt. I love doing hexagon quilts.

rosiewell 05-23-2013 06:19 AM

this is incredible, I don't know how you have the patience and the skill to piece so many tiny pieces!

BuzzinBumble 05-23-2013 07:20 AM

Your hexie quilt is so unique and gorgeous! The fabrics you chose make it look like a real antique! It is wonderful and I hope you get it finished sooner than you think.

jbj137 05-23-2013 07:28 AM

Gives me inspiration.
Have one cut out but have not started sewing it as yet.

nena 05-23-2013 07:50 AM

How neat. I would see if I could find someone to hand quilt it. Beautiful quilt.

sewbizgirl 05-23-2013 08:22 AM

My goodness... what a lot of intricate work! It's looking great.

MargeD 05-23-2013 08:33 AM

What a treasure - I would never tackle hexagons or anything else for that matter that small. You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

PS Stitcher 05-23-2013 08:52 AM

I do the same thing! Have a box that is ready to take with me when I have to be somewhere and wait. Yours looks great!!

piecequilter 05-23-2013 09:46 AM

Your quilt is amazing! I love it! When I started doing hexi quilts I baisted with thread, but now i baste with elmers washable school glue stick. It works fine and is a much faster way to go.
I cant wait to see yours when you are finished!

Sewbeeit2 05-23-2013 10:23 AM

Baptist fan by circle lord did great on mine .

Absolutely gorgeous!

JanieH 05-23-2013 03:25 PM

That is gorgeous! I love the variation on the sizes of the flowers - so different! What an inspiration!

mimiof4 05-23-2013 03:45 PM

This is a amazing quilt top WIP I love the combination of it. It is different than any I have personally seen before. It is truly inspiring. I have hand pieced two GFG and hand quilted three ( and one of mine isn't done) (quilted two for a friend) anyway. When I take the time to hand piece I think they deserve hand quilting just how I think. You don't have to quilt every hexie. Good luck with you decision.

Retiree 05-23-2013 03:49 PM

It's stunning! Your color palette is perfect.

When I first looked at the finished side thought someone would have to be crazy to sew fabric on such tiny paper hexies but when I turned them over I was completely shocked. The tiny hexies and other assembled display pieces they were showing were glued! Instead of folding the fabric and basting the fabrics around the paper hexies like I have been doing they simply used basting glue and dabbed glue on the fabric when they folded it over the corners! I tried it with an Elmers school glue stick when I got home and it works, but I can't seem to force myself to do it, it seems like cheating after I have sewn so many already. Do you agree?

Do you mean to use the glue to baste the hexies? I have not tried that, but it sounds like a great idea. I will have try it!!

Thank you for sharing!!

audsgirl 05-23-2013 05:44 PM

Good gracious! That is one amazing quilt, and I don't use that word much. I love how you have different sizes and shapes of patterns. Just stunning.

Iraxy 05-23-2013 05:56 PM

Very very nice work. Patience must be one of your virtues. Just gorgeous.

coastienest 05-23-2013 06:38 PM

Oh my goodness. I can't imagine doing all that tiny work. Beautiful job

Battle Axe 05-23-2013 06:41 PM

You said .5 hexes, do you mean 1 1/2 inch??? I just cut out 2 inch hexes which will be just bigger than a quarter when sewed. I didn't read all 7 pages of comments. Sorry if I missed something. Marcia

MNnancy 05-23-2013 06:50 PM

EPP really is a labor of love, isn't it?! Yours is beautiful.

MamaInRed 05-23-2013 07:50 PM

Your quilt is beautiful I am so glad you shared it. O love these quilts but would never gave the patients to stay with one project that long. Keep up the great work :)

jmoore 05-24-2013 03:21 AM

What an undertaking... you must have plenty of patience. I'm not sure I would be ready for a project like that for sometime. I have just learned to paper piece earlier this year.

It is absolutely beautiful and can't wait to see you post photos of your finished project.

LindaMRB 05-24-2013 04:12 AM

I like your reason for posting now instead of later and "I am afraid hand quilting might push 'done' into the next decade!!" is funny!

I love some of the fabrics and it looks like you are doing a great job! Keep at it and I hope I'm still here when it is finished!

humbird 05-24-2013 05:04 AM

Oh my you are a brave lady! 1/2 inch hexies! It is so beautiful. I would imagine you have seen the Insanity Quilt? It to was made with .5 hexies, but I must say, your design layout is by far the best! I have done a few 1/2 inch hexie "flowers" to use on borders, and know I would not do a whole quilt with them! I use 1 inch, but have been considering 3/4 inch, if I live long enough. I like your idea of appliqueing the borders. And, I do think your beautiful quilt deserves to be hand quilted. Hoping to see more of this lovely WIP.

gramquilter2 05-24-2013 12:41 PM

WOW, that is a fantastic WIP

Traditional 05-24-2013 05:29 PM

Great job!!! A Lady talked me into hand quilting a queen size flower garden, it was the most boring quilt I have ever quilted. The problem is ever 4 or 5 stitches it's time to turn. On the other hand after all that hand work, Do you really have a choice? The end result will be worth it.

Fraew 05-24-2013 06:08 PM

Just lovely!
