At sewing group on Thursday, some of the gals were making hot bowl holders used in the microwave. I decided to see if I could make something to hold a hot casserole coming out of the oven so that it could to used at the table. I searched QB and saw a square one I liked so I whipped one up. I didn't have any batting that is used for potholders, (what is it called? My mind is a blank right now). I used two layers of cotton batting. I don't think that is enough to keep from getting burned, but if you grab the tabs, you can get a really good hold on it to pass it at the table. I need to get to JoAnns to get the right batting. I'm thinking with the next one, I might use some Timtex on the bottom to give it more stability.

Quiltin-nannie is not using this in the microwave, but as a potholder for a hot dish after it comes out of the oven. Unless I misunderstood the original post? I probably did misunderstand.
I have heard too many stories of fabric items igniting in the microwave to even consider making anything fabric to go in a microwave. If the item is used on a table after the item is baked or microwaved, Insulbrite would work fine and protect the surface it's placed on. Personally, I would not put anything fabric in a microwave. No matter what anyone else said. |
You can't use insulbright in a microwave - only 100% cotton fabric, batting and thread. However, if it a hot dish holder for something you take out of the oven then insul bright is okay. I've made several microwave bowl holders and we love them. I need to make a few larger ones for some our bigger bowls.

What a clever idea!

What a great idea. I just might have to make some for Xmas gifts.

To give it more stability you might want to use two layers of heavy duty fusible pellon or Ultra hold Heat and Bond. that should firm it up pretty good.

Insulbrite!! I just couldn't think of the name of it. I really won't use this for microwave. I just want it for hot dishes from the oven. Thanks for restarting my brain for me! Will be off to JoAnns to get some Insulbrite!!

Insulbrite is the solution to this problem. Great project. Looks nice.

good idea. maybe just add a couple more layers of cotton batt, or what's the one with the foil in it to it. adds more stability and acts as a potholder.
great idea you came up with there. |
