Thanks for sharing your great hot pads! :) I'm already thinking of all the fabrics in my stash that could be used to make some!

Bias binding of course? Yours or store bought or both?

AngeliaNR 06-12-2015 06:35 AM

Actually, not bias binding. I've done them both ways (bias and straight) and found no advantage to the bias. The pad is 10.5" in diameter, so one 2.5" wide WOF cut will bind one pad with a small leftover. I have also, in the past, pieced the binding strips, so I could use smaller scraps.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Great gift idea!

Rose_P 06-12-2015 07:10 PM

They're great. I really should make some as gifts. They'd be good stocking stuffers, or a little bigger yet, they could be placemats that would work very well on a round table. Remember if you use Insulbrite to tell the giftee that they can't be used in the microwave.

I think my old Kenmore has a big enough bias binding foot that would make this much easier if I can get the hang of it. Has anyone tried that? I wouldn't use it on a quilt because I want double fabric on the edge, but for a little utilitarian item that tends to get stained before it wears out, that might be ideal. I'll have to try.

I just have to add that the spell check does not approve of "stuffers", "placemats" or "giftee", and of course not "Insulbrite." That must be some kind of a record for one post where I'm going to actually stick by my preferred spelling and let the spell check go pout in a corner.

Very clever idea. I used to make mine like that using the sandwich plate for the big potholder and a saucer for the small potholder. They worked great. Yours are beautiful. I loved making mine.

Thank you for sharing, Never thought about using a plated, is now on my to do list

craftymatt2 06-13-2015 08:28 AM

how do you get your binding on so straight?? Mine wants to scrunch up

I just go very slowly following the curve. The part you fold over will look kind of scrunched/gathered before it is folded to the back.

Too cute! The binding is so perfect, I thought it was pipping or covered cording...just lovely and perfectly done.

craftymatt2 06-14-2015 10:17 AM

I made one of these, and it turned out great, dont have a camera and even if i did i wouldnt know how to put it on here, i used insulbrite and the all cotton batting, I'm going to try to make a rectangle one now. But I see Christmas gifts in the future

AngeliaNR 06-14-2015 11:58 AM

Yay, Mary! I'm glad it turned out well for you.
