Hotpads

2 Attachment(s)
When I started making this style/size of hotpad, they were for my husband who never believes pot holders are big enough! I prefer using them as a pad for setting down a hot dish. When I gave a couple to my mom, she used them on her kitchen table to set candles on (and occasionally hot dishes)--versatile little buggers! The ones I gave her had fall-themed fabrics, and she mentioned that she would like to have more, so she could use them all through the year.

Her birthday is coming up, so here is what I made (except for the one on the bottom right, they are double-sided--the second picture shows them flipped over).

You are so creative. I have lots of fabric that I want to use up and this looks like a great idea. Thank you for sharing.

FabStripper 06-10-2015 08:43 AM

Can I ask what size they are and what did you put in the middle? What a great idea to make one for each season for your mom for her birthday. She will love these as much as we do.

They are 10.5" in diameter (I drew around a dinner plate). I layered them as follows: top fabric, flannel, Insulbrite, flannel, bottom fabric. I have used cotton batting instead of flannel sometimes--just depends what I have scraps of. :)

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

joyce888 06-10-2015 08:58 AM

Very pretty, and like you said so versatile.

Grandma Bonnie 06-10-2015 10:02 AM

They are wonderful and your Mom will love them. Thanks for the directions also as I was wondering that also.

What a cool idea...thinking I will be doing some of those for holiday gifts...thanks!

marymm 06-10-2015 02:58 PM

Practical but pretty and personal! Perfect gifts. I love the fact you made the new set reversible. If you wanted to use smaller scraps, you could string piece! OR, if you want to personalize you could embroidery on one side--perhaps a monogram...I think this is a much better gift that another fancy soap or whatever!

Kathy T. 06-10-2015 03:44 PM

Such a perfect gift for your mom! Cute fabrics for every occasion - I love that they are mostly reversible so you get more use out of each one. You must have great scraps ...

geevee 06-10-2015 03:55 PM

Oh, I like those a lot, just as pretty as they are functional.

bigsister63 06-10-2015 04:06 PM

TOOOO CUTE!!!!! Have you made microwave fabric bowls. They ware like a big potholder but are cupid so bowls will fit in in them. There is a "new" batting to be used in them that is 100% cotton. W/W has some poly in it so I was told by LFS.

deedum 06-10-2015 04:23 PM

love the pot holders! how hard was the binding to put on! I may give this a try and see!

Thank you for the directions and size help. I think these are just fantastic. I know your mom will love them all.

roguequilter 06-10-2015 05:10 PM

these are soo pretty. i use a lot of scraps & am gifted with huge bags of scraps from friends. i don't use novelty prints in my quilts & have not been able to come up w good use for some of the beautifully colored image fabrics of farm scenes, chickens etc. now i know! we use over sized hot pads to hold our plates in our quite informal style of eating dinner in front of the tv the last few years. visitors seem to think we've hit on a great idea. so ...they'll be getting some very pretty hot plate mats! thank you for this great idea!

Sandra in Minnesota 06-10-2015 05:25 PM

I think you have the year pretty well covered. Great job!

QuiltnLady1 06-10-2015 07:03 PM

Great looking hot pads!! Think I will have to make some. Thanks for the instructions.

copycat 06-11-2015 02:14 AM

I tried to pick a favorite but couldn't. I love them all. I did spot the Easter fabric that I have in my stash.
Thank you for sharing these pretty potholders. Lucky Mom!

twinkie 06-11-2015 02:16 AM

Those are just great to give as gifts. Did you put insulbrite in them?

annette1952 06-11-2015 03:28 AM

Great looking multi-functional gifts. Yours are just gorgeous. I would love to make some for gifts too. Thanks for the info!

JuneBillie 06-11-2015 04:18 AM

These are all gorgeous and so useful. I think I will borrow this idea to make some for each month of the year for my daughter in law to go in her Christmas Package. I want to make me some too. :)

What size did you make these?

ManiacQuilter2 06-11-2015 05:05 AM

Very creative. What a cute gift.

southernmema 06-11-2015 05:08 AM

Very nice! And yes, a great gift idea!

coopah 06-11-2015 05:18 AM

All beautiful and practical gifts! Your bindings look so very professional! Way to go!

JoyjoyMarie 06-11-2015 08:04 AM

These are great - nice variety of fabrics, and double sided makes them twice as good! Thanks for sharing your construction layers too - I'm never sure how much to put into hot pads and potholders.

Bluebonnets 06-11-2015 08:15 AM

This is a great gift!

tmw 06-11-2015 10:29 AM

there very pretty, whats inside?

Rina 06-11-2015 10:42 AM

These potholders are beautiful! Compliments on the binding. I have tried to make something similar, but my binding was not as neat as yours. How wide did you cut your binding?

MargeD 06-11-2015 11:14 AM

Mom will definitely have a good variety to place on her table now. Nice gift idea.

Bibliogirl 06-11-2015 11:46 AM

How clever this is and such a good use for scraps, and for a gift! I would love to get one.
