How do you do it?
 

I am using scraps to make these little star squares. (not sure what they are called) I think the squares are either 2 1/2 or 2 1/4". I can't remember which right now. And when I make the HST's they are cut bigger. (can't remember those sizes off hand either) Since I'm making all of this out of scraps...some barely 6 inches wide, is there a way to make them quicker than one square at a time? Or is that my lot in life when it comes to finishing this quilt?

Love the colors in your quilt, and the pattern also. It might be a lot more work making it from scraps, but it sure did turn out beautiful. You will love it for years to come.

There are quicker ways to make half square triangles, but some give you bias edges, which are a pain to deal with.
There is the grid method, but it probably isn't a great idea for scraps:

As someone else mentioned, scrap quilts do take a long time. Check out the quiltville site Tartan provided for her 'enders and leaders' method. It's not any faster, but with some preplanning, you can make a scrap quilt while you are piecing other quilts.

I love making two quilts at a time...using the leader ender method.

As far as easy, I don't think so. With every block being different fabric, it has to be cut as you go. You could layer three or four different scraps and cut the squares that way but IMHO that is about all you can do to speed the cutting and piecing.

It is going to be awesome when finished.

I haven't an answer for you, just a compliment.....beautiful!

First off...beautiful. secondly, have you tried chain peicing. You cound premake all the HST's, then lay out squares in desired pattern....and start stitching!

For the HST's.... If you have scraps that you can cut into squares, cut them 7/8" larger than you finished squares. Mark the diagonal on the lighter piece and sew 1/4" away from diagonal on both sides. Cut on the diagonal and you have two completed HST's. That's all I've got for you. Scrap quilts take extra time. But you are using up your bonus fabric - so it is ok!

I do not know of a faster way, sorry!!! It is so beautiful!!!!!!!!

I saw a tutorial from Missouri Star Quilts where she took 2 squares and sewed them together a 1/4" around the entire square and then cut diagonally and got 4 half square triangles. I love their tutorials. I think this was in a tutorial about an extra large quilt block that needed half square triangles.

One square at a time. Oh the fun of it!

Doing scrappy can be more time consuming, but well worth the effort. Your blocks are so pretty! Do show us pics of your progress! :)

I think you're stuck with one block at a time. But your quilt is beautiful!

"Or is that my lot in life when it comes to finishing this quilt?" I am afraid so, that is what scrap quilting is about but look at the end result, fantabulous, don't run out of patience as the end result is so worth it.

You can make the HSTs easier using Thangles. A 6" square would give you eight 2" finished HSTs. Or, make your own paper piece by drawing out a 6" square on paper, marking diagonally twice and sewing 1/4" from the line.

Also I know there is a tutorial for making 4 at a time on You Tube. Take two squares right sides together, sew all around all four of the outer edges. Cut corner to corner and then the other corner to corner. At this point open them up and you have 4 - 1/2 square triangles. I saw this done by Jenny at Missouri Star Quilt Company on You Tube and it works but all four of the triangles are on the bias.

Such a beautiful quilt, I just love your colors! It may take a while but don't give up it is coming along nicely. You will be happy you finished it in the end.

Thank you for the compliments! I kinda figured since I'm using scraps...some not very big that it was just going to be one piece at a time. I don't mind it actually. :) I will use up scraps I would have normally thrown away before I realized you CAN make something with them.

Your quilt is beautiful. I love it!!!

You can make 8 HST at a time using this "formula": X * 2 + 1 "X" is the size HST that you need. Say you need 3" HST. Then that formula would be 3 * 2 +1 = 7. This tells you to cut your 2 squares into 7". After this, you draw lines down the center horizontally, vertically and diagonally (both ways). Place right sides together and stitch 1/4" from either side of the DIAGONAL lines. When this is done, all of the lines are now your cutting lines. Press and trim. You should have 8 3" HST. Do the same if you need 1" HST or 12" HST ... should all work the same. sometimes I add 1.5" instead of only 1", but that's only because I feel I need the leeway when trimming. If your sewing is spot-on...this is unnecessary.

Can you tell me , what is the leader ender method?

This is so pretty and it will make a beautiful quilt. No faster way from me-just love it! That is one of my favorite blocks. Great job-enjoy the process as it grows.
