How do you feel about strings?

I admit that I am not a scrappy person, controlled scrappies I love but can't get myself to do total scrappies. Of course I can't say scrappy quilts and not think of Bonnie Hunter lol. I did her mystery quilts the last two years and love love the controlled scrappies I made. Her before last mystery quilt was Orca Bay and it contained string blocks that are of a particular color family- well, I love that concept, as I can get the movement of the stringy blocks without killing myself (type A personality here lol )going totally scrappy. I had made some extra string units for that quilt and pulled them out some time ago to use them to make wonky stars. A great leaders and enders project! I used all of my red strings to make this 23'' little quilt- love how it turned out and I am calling it Bonnie's Stars:o I have a bag full of leftover green string units that I need to think of a design to use them in next. So how do you feel about strings? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Indifferent?

I like the strings you did in this. I think it looks great.

Beautiful quilt and quilting. I have never made one on my to do list.
This is wonderful! I also love the way you quilted it.
I LOVE your stars!! And the use of strings is mind-boggling! You're a genius!! How about making one similar to the stars with the greens, but use trees instead of stars.
You asked how we feel about strings. I can't handle the scrappy thing so haven't tackled the string thing. Just sorting scraps makes me itch. |
I like string quilts because they are so unique! I LOVE the way your quilt turned out. Very nice job!
Your quilt looks great. I like the idea of string blocks/quilts as it's a great way to use up leftover and odd pieces of fabric. As Bonnie Hunter says, the scraps cost as much as regular yardage. Why throw it away??? (that's a paraphrase, of course) - - - - Jane

Love the strings and your quilt. You did a great job and the quilting is great also.
I simply love everything about this quilt
absolutely love them and your quilt.
I love string quilts, I've made several and will make several more. It's such an easy way to use up leftovers from other projects and it's a no brainer type of activity. Your color controlled star quilt is fabulous, I love it! I saw a rainbow string quilt with the colors grouped that really appealed to me. I may do one like that.

Sew cute!
very creative with your stars... nice and different
Beautiful quilt. I like the string quilts with black around them. I have not made a string quilt but, who knows? I might.
I love doing string quilts and yours is a great one. I agree with dhanke, it is a no brainer activity. I have a stack of 6 1/2" string blocks that I was thinking of using in a nap size. I like this idea better! Make stars and use up that WIP!
I never made a string quilt, I'm afraid if I do I'll wish I had them for a different project. How silly is that?!
I really like your red wonky string stars. I definitely have some string quilts on my bucket list.
nicely done
Terrific quilt and wonderful twist on the string block!
Just love bonnie Hunter and her quilts, Like your use of Reds in this quilt, Very nice, and thanks for sharing.
Love it! I think there are more strings in your future!! Bonnie Hunter is my hero!
I didn't like string quilts before I joined this board. BUT since joining I have viewed such well done scrappy's and strings, That I have both a scrappy and a sting going right now. I am doing them and making myself make it totally scrappy with no control hoping to break out of my comfort zone. Scrappy and strings are way out of my comfort zone. I'm now a lover of both kinds of quilts, thanks to all the wonderful, gifted people here on the board.
Terrific string quilt! Well done! Great use of strings, and nice quilting! :)
I love your quilt!
How can you go wrong with Scraps, strings and Stars... a few of my favorite things all put together. Love your Bonnie's stars quilt!
Great job!!
Really nice quilt.
I love your red string star quilt! I really like string blocks and quilts as I am very poor at cutting correctly and the string/scrappy are very forgiving. And I hate to throw away any fabrics. Save all for either cutting into scraps or save anything to small for doggie/kitty beds and stuffing. I think string/scrappy is the ultimate concept of quilts our foremothers had in mind using all the scraps they could find as all the fabric stores weren't just around the corner or down the street. Fabric is expensive to me...
I really like your quilt! Great job!
I've never done strings but I love yours :)
Love your little quilt! I have done many things with strings(strips?). How about a St. Pat quilt with four-leaf clover?
I love string quilts - I like the way they show you can use ANY fabric and they turn out great. I really like your wonky stars!!
Very pretty quilt. My first couple of scrappies were controlled. Now I use the bag method. Grab a string and add. Only goes back if it isn't long enough for the spot. Sometimes I add a strip to that to make it long enough.
Well I love YOUR string stars!
I love strings - full size or better. Great job!
Your quilt is wonderful. I have never worked with strings but it looks interesting.
I really like this one!
I'm not into the scrappy thing, either, but hope to find a way to start using up some of my scraps other than BOM's. Funny how no matter what you do with them they seem to reproduce! haha |
String Star

I have a love/hate relationship with strings. Hate sorting and storing them (they must multiply when I'm not looking) but love what can result from them....like your string blocks. Thank goodness for Bonnie Hunter's inspiration to all of us.
Here's a string star top that I just completed yesterday. I wish I could give credit to someone for the unique setting, but I can't find the reference where I saw a picture of it....on a blog somewhere, I'm sure. No pattern, just pictures of this setting in a more scrappy style. Last year was pretty stressful for me and I would just escape to the sewing room with my drawer of strings and an audiobook. I ended up with 24 red/light blocks and 24 blue/light blocks! All 10.5 inches, pieced on muslin on the diagonal. So this finished out at 64 inches square and used only 10 of those blocks. Only 38 more to use up!! AnitaSt |

Very nice! I really like red and white quilts |
Looks really nice and a lot of work it must have taken cutting all those strips. I like it and would like to try one. Good job. Sue
