I also hand quilt. As has been stated, machine quilting is not my talent. I have no money for nor place to put a long arm, therefore, hand quilting will continue to be my choice. I also feel long arm quilting is a whole other learning experience. I'm not sure I have the desire or ability to learn to do it well.

I do both. I like to have something to work on in my lap, and I can't give up my sewing machine either. I must admit, I love the fact that there are people out there that use a longarm to compliment my quilt. I've only had one bad experience in over 30 yrs of making quilts but it won't discourage me from making more :D Too many quilts, too little time !

I really enjoy hand sewing, like hand sewing the binding to the back but having done only a bit of hand quilting; I'm not sure it is for me. I may try again in the future

rahaube 04-09-2011 05:01 PM

I have hand quilted two large quits and several small ones. I am leaning to free motion quilt and have done some straight line quilting by machine. I have had two quilts long arm quilted but can't afford to have them all done that way. I enjoy hand quilting but time is a factor, especially with the large quilts.

AliceQ 04-09-2011 05:33 PM

I love hand quilting. It's so relaxing. I also finish my bindings by hand.

Lucy90 04-09-2011 05:54 PM

I hand quilt certain quilts. I hand quilt more of the old fashion ones. I quilt most of my quilts by machine. I like to hand quilt as it is relaxing for me

grandma Janice 04-09-2011 06:11 PM

I hand quilt. never have machine quilted.

Stitchnripper 04-09-2011 06:15 PM

I do both. by hand takes so much longer (especially with long breaks) but I do enjoy it.

jdeery 04-09-2011 06:23 PM

I hand quilt, love it, can't wait to get my quilts to that stage.
Seems like it takes forever, but I love the look also....It is
the personal touch and love that goes into it. I hand quilted
my daughter a quilt and told her every time I sat down to
quilt, I was praying for her as I stitched.

grammysharon 04-09-2011 09:33 PM

I do both!

I was afraid to try again for about 10 years but the last one I had done was wonderful! I think the machine quilts might hold up longer if they are used but I just love the look of a hand quilted quilt!

katigirl 04-09-2011 11:35 PM

Started out just hand quilting for years. Have started to do more machine itd and fm quilting in the last year or so. I'm still working on prefecting my talent on the machine. No matter what I think I will always have something going in the hand quilting area.

katigirl 04-09-2011 11:37 PM

I have hand quilted for years and have taken up machine quilting in the ditch and free motion in the last several years so am still prefecting that. Will always have some hand quilting going.

sewobsessed1 04-10-2011 02:27 AM

I hand quilt.
It's very relaxing and I prefer the look of it.

Moonglow 04-10-2011 02:30 AM

I do both but prefer to hand quilt.

MerryQuilter 04-10-2011 04:09 AM

Do and enjoy both, there is just something about the look of hand quilting that cannot be duplicated.

I LOVE the handwork but my hands hurt most off the time...not just needle pricks but muscle pain.
Still, I don't think I'll stop.
I looked into the cost of a better machine and decided it did not make sense for how I spend my time.

I would like suggestions though, for using my old Elna or the Kenmore I have. Both date from the 1960s. The Singer I have is probably older, but not like the antiques I've seen online here.

I carry my quilts everywhere and quilt at swim meets, on long car trips and even during my lunch hour at work! Don't tell anyone but I even have quilted at stop lights on the S-L-O-W ride home through Atlanta traffic.

Lol do the lunch thing as well, traffic not quite that slow here in "Smallbany" NY

I have only hand tied so far but am going to try to quilt the next one has anyone tried the quilt as you go way may try that next time

csmomma2 04-10-2011 06:11 AM

I machine piece and hand quilt everything. It is what I enjoy the most about quilting. It is so relaxing and since I can sit anywhere and quilt, especially in the same room as my husband, which I couldn't do if I machine quilted, I just love hand quilting.

Aquarius 04-10-2011 08:59 AM

I hand quilt. I have done a couple of machine quiltilng, stitch in the ditch, but prefer hand quilting.

appliquequiltdesigns 04-10-2011 02:57 PM

I hand quilt my quilts. I am not a good on the sewing machine, so I'm afraid I am going to mess up my quilt. It is easier to remove the stitches in hand quilting

I'm 58 yrs old and have made many quilts. All have been hand pieced and hand quilted. When my Grandmother taught me at age 8 or 9 you hand to have even work with at least 6 stchs per inch or out it came. I still love it and still love to challenge myself with stitches per inch. I can usually be found with patches in my handbag along with needle and thread. It relaxes me.

Melody 04-10-2011 06:00 PM

I love to handquilt. I'm not in a hurry and have no deadlines. It's done whenever I get it done and I'm okay with that. That's one of the main reasons I love it: no pressure!

Butterflyblue 04-10-2011 06:03 PM

I do both - more machine than hand quilting because it is faster, but I like having some hand work going.

Sistergoldenhair 04-10-2011 06:30 PM

I have only done hand quilting. I would like to try machine quilting someday. But all in all I like the look of hand quilting better. It give the quilt a warm old fashion charm. The machine ones to me have that store bought look to them. I think they are lovely and I know alot of ppl do them that way. It is just a personal preference. I of coarse would not turn away any quilt done by machine. lol

desertrose 04-10-2011 09:43 PM

I hand quilt 98% of the time and only machine quilt heavy fleece projects.

Borntohandquilt 04-11-2011 12:16 AM

I do wholecloths and I only hand quilt. I even sew the length of fabric together by hand to get the top and the backing in the right size!

ruck9085 04-11-2011 06:57 AM

Hand quilt all of mine, although with the RA it is taking linger to get done these days. But, I think hand quilting adds an air of authenticity to a quilt. Guess I'm just an old fashioned kind of gal cause I like the old ways and the old patterns.

iltoaz 04-11-2011 11:32 AM

Hand quilter - very relaxing for me.

monkicat 04-11-2011 11:40 AM

I spent a few classes learning to machine quilt and I like to do it when I'm pressed for time, but right now I"m hand quilting and love it! I think it looks more, well, "quilty".....lol!

Cottontop 04-11-2011 12:08 PM

I'm trying to do both. My hand quilting's not too bad. But, got this fancy Janome and can't get the tension, etc. set right to make it quilt consistently. Glad you asked. HELP!!!!

bnndr 11-03-2011 10:17 AM

I only hand quilt, never machine. Have occasionaly tied a quilt but those have been thick crazy quilts.

teddysmom 11-03-2011 10:37 AM

I just started quilting last year and only consider hand piecing and quilting. Machines seem to have something against me. I have a sewing machine but only use it when nothing else will work. As soon as I start sewing on the machine, things happen--the bobbin thread runs out, the thread gets tangled on the underside of the material and on and on and on. When I hand piece/quilt, all is slower but much more relaxing.

I agree! Much easier to correct mistakes when done by hand.

Marti1943 11-03-2011 10:42 AM

I do both. Machine quilting is faster and can be very beautiful but hand quilting is my first love. The more you do it the more proficient you become.

mary quilting 11-03-2011 11:16 AM

I hand and machine and quilt

SandraD 11-03-2011 11:21 AM

I hand quilt but am looking forward to learning some machine quilting as well.

RonieM 11-03-2011 11:23 AM

99.9% machine quilt (or send it to a LAQ). I have been trying some hand quilting.

prairiequeen 11-03-2011 11:35 AM

Have always machine quilted. My Mom had always hand quilted, she thinks its something she should teach me before she is no longer with us,so i am trying hand quilting.I do enjoy the hand work watching tv on these long winter nights.

Dakota Girl 11-03-2011 11:57 AM

I do both, depending on the quilt.

cwessel47 11-03-2011 01:45 PM

I hand quilt. I've tried a little on the machine - and I imagine I could get the hang of it. I just really prefer the look of hand-quilting. And it keeps me sane (sorta) and out of trouble!
