I was just curious as to how many people still did hand quilting vs machine quilting? Ive done both but prefer to hand quilt as I feel it adds more personality to the quilts I make for my grandkids. The lst quilt I had done by machine was a double wedding ring and the lady didnt tell me it was her lst shot at machine quilting so she bunched it up and basically ruined it. I was afraid to try again for about 10 years but the last one I had done was wonderful! I think the machine quilts might hold up longer if they are used but I just love the look of a hand quilted quilt!

I hand quilt I have one I need to get to work on I have only 6 weeks left to finish it!!

Mariposa 04-08-2011 07:29 AM

I don't hand quilt any of mine, due to hand issues. I quilt most items on my longarm. Quicker for me too!

debcavan 04-08-2011 07:31 AM

I enjoy my machine and not only machine quilt but do the binding totally by machine. We should all do what we enjoy. A friend only hand quilts and I love her quilts. She enjoys it so much in f ront of the fire place in the winter.

I do both! I currently have one of each going right now. One on the LA and one in my lap hoop. I love having handwork to do and I love doing MQ too. Granted I can complete a heck of a lot more MQ quilts to my HQ. The HQ I have right now, I have MQ 4 and am on my 5th! This is with some piecing mixed in too. But I can't stand not having some sort of handwork in the evenings while watching TV. It is a rare day that I don't do any handwork at all but I can go weeks without touching my LA. I can't wait to baste my next HQ project on the LA. The basting/sandwiching process I hated more than anything but on a LA it is a piece of cake.

I will never give up either unless health issues force me to and I don't have any issues now. Knock wood!!

I don't have the patience to do hand... I'm a machine lady all the way. Plus now i have a LA so its even better!

Beebonnet 04-08-2011 07:40 AM

I machine quilt because I am so slow at hand quilting, though I love the look of it. I make too many tops to hand quilt at the rate I go.

Bluelady 04-08-2011 07:41 AM

Machine or longarm here! no time or patience for hand.

Aurora 04-08-2011 07:42 AM

I plan to handquilt.

Connie in CO 04-08-2011 08:19 AM

I just machine quilt all of mine.Connie in CO

I handquilt. It is my favorite part of making a quilt. I do it partly because I like the look of it and partly because I find it relaxing to do.

I too love to hand quilt. Last night had to wait extra hour for soccer practice for 13 yr old DGS, who is working on his first quilt. I had some old flannel blocks in the car that I was going to take to goodwill, he ended up sewing them by hand to have something to do. he said, I think I like sewing by hand better than the machine. He is a real hands person, loves and can design any type of orgami and legos. Thought that was cute. He has never been told that one way is better or easier...just what he liked doing and thats what it is all about, right?

suezquilts 04-08-2011 09:23 AM

time is my biggest issue, do I have the time?
My hands hurt so much when I do bindings or hand quilt, that is the second issue.

I started machine quilting in 04, and haven't hand quilted since. Before that I had hand quilted maybe 5 quilts, queen size mostly.

StitchinJoy 04-08-2011 09:25 AM

I'm a professional longarm machine quilter. I love machine quilting for other people to help them finish their special quilts. And it pays the bills.

In the evenings, I hand quilt my own special quilts.

stormatsea45 04-08-2011 09:29 AM

I tried hand quilting once, and didn't enjoy it, so first went to my DSM and have since bought a mid arm Gammill which I dearly love using. It is so much faster, besides I enjoy the process.

fabric_fancy 04-08-2011 09:34 AM

hand quilting is more of an embellishment in my work then not.

even if the entire quilt was hand quilted i'd still consider it an embellishment.

95% of my work contains both machine and hand quilting.

emerald46 04-08-2011 10:10 AM

I love the hand quilting part totally! Going to try FMQ again and look at long arm. Doubt that I could ever completely give up hand quilting unless my hands give out at some point. DD says she can't believe with as many "toys" as we own that I don't have a machine to do this...if I wanted one I would have it. Who knows I haven't made a big purchase in awhile!

CloverPatch 04-08-2011 10:14 AM

I hand quilt the big stuff, machine the small stuff. nothing more relaxing than curling up with a quilt, watching TV and stitching away. Always sad when I finish a quilt. Glad it is done, but disappointed I don't have anything to stitch anymore.

boohoofish 04-08-2011 10:17 AM

Hand quilt - find it so relaxing!

Parrothead 04-08-2011 10:48 AM

Hand piece and quilt because that was the way I was taught. Machine quilt placemats, bags, pot holders, etc. But for a quilt it is hand. I quilt while watching TV and now that baseball season is here, it is a bonus!
I do think we all have to do whatever WE like and what is best for us. I am retired so I have the time. I also cannot afford a LA just like I cannot afford to pay a lot for fabric. I have been sewing all my life and I think I can tell good fabric from bad fabric no matter where I buy.

barefoot quilter 04-08-2011 12:42 PM

i do both does that count

cathylynn 04-08-2011 12:52 PM

I'm in awe of hand piecers/quilters but my hands hurt after just a little bit of sewing so I can't do it.

janell2009 04-08-2011 01:15 PM

I have never had quilted and this year is my 1st time trying to machine quilt.. I just tied all the other ones.. I have made many denim quilts but those I just tied or tacked with machine. I also have done t-shirt quilts and those I just did one simple line down the sashes. So still trying to master the machine quilting.. I think it is an acquired skill... Lots of practice

jenc1323 04-08-2011 01:15 PM

i love to hand quilt as i have just started and havent decided what machine to purchase,

diannemc 04-08-2011 01:30 PM

I love to hand quilt a lot more then machine quilting but I am too slow.I do machine quilt when I need one fast!!

merrylouw 04-08-2011 01:36 PM

I do both, it depends on the quilt. I'm working on one for my daughter now, hand quilting a Turning Twenty for her sofa. I machine quilted (with decorative stitches) one for my oldest DGD last summer.

I love the look of hand quilting, although my stitches aren't that small.

The machine quilting I do is on my Babylock Espire.

ann clare 04-08-2011 02:45 PM

I do mostly hand but am working towards machine.

dlwillia 04-08-2011 03:54 PM

I only hand quilt. I find it relaxing and it goes anywhere i go.

SherriB 04-08-2011 04:16 PM

I do machine quilting. I used to do cross stitch and love it. But carpel tunnel and arthritis took it away. I may try a small piece to see if I could do it.

LAB55 04-08-2011 04:18 PM

I only hand quilt, it is relaxing.
I tried machine quilting , just can not get the hang of it. Even bought a foot for my machine to try, still a no go. I get too tense - arms & hand start hurting & cramping.
I will stick to my hand quilting ! :-D

LivelyLady 04-08-2011 05:09 PM

I enjoy both hand quilting and FMQ.

Aimee G 04-08-2011 05:55 PM

I prefer hand quilting, though I've done some simple machine quilting.

pjnesler 04-08-2011 06:02 PM

I've hand quilted, sent 2 quilts to Long arm quilters (that did a great job), and LOTS of my quilts I've done on my own Free motion, I guess I must say the quilt "Talks to me" and that's how I know what process to use - ya, I'm sort of crazy, but it works! :hunf:

dreamboat 04-08-2011 06:03 PM

I do hand quilt and regular sewing machine quilt also. I just got a handiquilter 2 about 6 monthes ago so I plan on doing some long arm quilting maybe within the next year. I am in the process of hunting for a regular sewing machine with a long arm. I hear the Juki98Q is a good machine.

Jingle 04-08-2011 06:07 PM

I now only machine quilt, never hand pieced, afraid they would not hold up. I have hand quilted lots of quilts until I learned to FMQ and would not go back, hands could not take the abuse anymore. At 65 I am only into fast, can make one completely in 2 weeks at the most, trying to make lots of beautiful quilts and use up some of my fabrics. Fat chance but, I am trying.

anicra 04-09-2011 03:48 AM

I've tried hand quilting but it just doesn't work for me. I machine quilt my quilts and hope to get a longarm one of these days.

midgie1 04-09-2011 03:51 AM

Hand quilting is all I do. Also at our guild we hand quilt the quilts that we donate

dolores 04-09-2011 04:31 AM

I do both. I love to hand quilt and I also love learning to machine quilt. Each has their own place in my quilts. Some I will hand quilt and others machine quilt. It depends on the quilt and who will recieve it.

believe57 04-09-2011 04:35 AM

I love to hand quit... never done on a machine

1st.spring46 04-09-2011 04:38 AM

I enjoy hand quilting, it is relaxing for me especially with my chinese music playing quietly in the background , I am happy and contented.
