I would quilt it either without batting or with a plain cotton flannel, which is cheaper than batting any way.

My son's favorite blanky "blue" is minky on front and satin on back with no batting- seams aren't an issue. I would say muslin is a good recommendation because satin and minky would be a major pain to work with :)

My personal preference is satin and minky. I do not put anything between the two. I pin the edges and in several spots throughout the quilt. I sew the edges. Then, by hand, I use embroidery thread or floss to sew * shaped stitches throughout the quilt, about 1/2 " long each stitch. (You could do this where your corners meet in your squares.) I then put a satin binding on. It's the softness the babies and kids love, and I find that these are the blankets they drag around with them, and cuddle up with. They love the softness of the satin, fleece or minky.
So the baby is a girl. They need to get over their issues quickly.

If you are going over the seams with a zig zag, maybe you could do that asd your quilting and usre a decorrative stitch. It would look pretty on the back, plus hold the seams flat and sort of hide the seam showing through thing. The quikt is really pretty.

I would use a backing (no Batting) of somethng in the color of light blue and pink. the backing would be a light flannel because it is cool in the air conditioned home in Florida. I made my grand daughter one that way when they lived in Florida and she is 13 now and still loves her summer time quilt. I also did the same thing for my grandson and they lived in Venezula at that time and he is 10 now and he brought his summer time quilt on his last trip to Ohio from Texas where they are now, it gets cold when traveling long distance in the car with the air conditioner. Without the batting it is light weight and cozy to snuggle in. I like the feel of minky fabric. I would quilt in the ditch around each square and if that wasn't enough quilting I would trace hearts or duck or something like that in the blocks if needed. trace them onto the block and follow the traced lines to quilt them.This is just a suggestion.

A beautiful quilt for a sweet little girl. I definitely would do muslin. Once this little girl enters their world they'll fall in love with her. How could they not?

What a sweet quilt. I love the feel of minky. The baby will love it too, and even in the summer, a quilt can be put down on the floor for the baby to have "tummy time".
