That's a neat quilt - has a lot of movement. Great job.

THanks for sharing. Muslin on the back?

there really is no pattern. I just took a stack of six inch squares and free cut from the bottom corner up to a few inches from the opposite corner on the other side. I repeated this for the other side, bury one on the middle stack, bury two on one of the other stacks, sew them together. That makes one unit of four. The units are trimmed to five inches. Then one block is sewn in a radiating pattern. I then took a 2 inch square and raw edge appliquéd it over the center of the block. The border is just a selection of five inch blocks. The hard part is getting an even distribution of all the fabrics so the colors don't cluster in all one spot. I missed in one place the same fabric butts up. can you spot it?

Really neat... might work for a "tie" quilt..

KatFish 01-18-2011 06:08 PM

Like Lori, this reminds me of the quilt top my Grandma made. I really like your design - you're right, the square in the center brings it all together very elegantly.

katyquilter 01-18-2011 07:21 PM

Wonderful use of your stash. I love it.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-18-2011 08:45 PM

sewingladydi 01-18-2011 09:08 PM

You're right-that black square just pulls it all together.

Damsel in DisDress 01-18-2011 09:12 PM

I think it looks great!

Jan T 01-18-2011 11:24 PM

Very nicely done. You should bind it in black too.

jackied 01-19-2011 12:01 AM

Very interesting quilt. Like the black center for sure. Don't think I've ever seen one exactly like this, nice.

I love your scrappy quilt, they are my favorites! I like how you tied it all together with the black centers  From all that fabric peeking out I would say you have a lot of fun sew days ahead of you :D

toomanycats 01-19-2011 04:59 AM

what a pretty way to use up scraps. the black in the center brings it all together. you have such interesting fabric.

tdgiffin 01-19-2011 05:02 AM

For some reason, it reminds me of those vintage crazy quilts.

toomanycats 01-19-2011 05:11 AM

did you sew the pieces for each square onto a base square or just stich and flip and trim? I ask because I have made several spiderweb quilts and you sew onto a base of paper or muslin. I just used muslin so I was wondering.

#1piecemaker 01-19-2011 05:32 AM

Nice quilt. I also spotted your stash behind the quilt. And I thought I had a lot! Great way to use them.

Stitchnripper 01-19-2011 05:41 AM

I love it. My favorite kind of quilt.

Somebunny 01-19-2011 05:50 AM

Wow, nice scrap quilt! This is me some day. I'm up to 2 boxes of scraps...I feel guilty not using them. But fear I can't make something good looking yet. LOve yours!

moreland 01-19-2011 06:18 AM

Neat quilt and a great way to use scraps. Thanks for sharing.

thebossbab 01-19-2011 07:33 AM

I'm really starting to warm-up to the scrappy quilts I see here on the board. Yours is really pretty.

Pat75 01-19-2011 08:00 AM

I love your quilt i prefer to make quilts with many different fabrics . I noticed all your other fabrics with some yardage to them and thought of a water color quilt that can be strip pieced .Its fun and easy. I have made 3 . One king one queen and one single . Name of book strip pieced watercolor magic by Deanna Spingola.

No base, straight piecing. just stack the cut pieces next to the machine, chain sew center piece to right piece, and then do the left piece, As long as your keep them in order, actually I don't clip between seams but just keep it going until all units are done. I usually made eight units at a time as that is how many layers of fabric I can cut through at once. Each time I cut a stack of 6" squares I got a unique set as it is completely free cut. Once I had all units sewn I trimmed them down to a five inches. Then I sorted through them and matched up units, and made the blocks. Four 5" units make one 9.5 blocks, and thirty in all for the quilt. I wanted it a bit bigger so hit on using a stack of 5" red blocks for a border and a bit of stash, cotton gingham, for an outer border. Once you get it organized it really goes quickly. The black squares were raw edge appliqués that I sewed to the center of each block. Since I trimmed everything down to five inches it all went together with out much pinning. I do plan to machine quilt it , but I am not sure how just yet. First I need to pull and piece a backing. I have lots of black and white stash, maybe with some of the left over red squares for a dash of color. My kids say that a pieced back gives them two quilts for the price of one.

Lovey quilt. Good for you in using what you already have on hand.

toomanycats 01-19-2011 10:16 AM

I can't wait to try it. I am not a red fan (even though I have a stash of red) but yours around the border just made the quilt. you are very clever and did such a good job.

theresa.redington 01-19-2011 10:47 AM

I know the feeling about using what you already have!!!!!!!!!!!!

mommafank 01-19-2011 12:06 PM
