So I woke up today at 8am--thank you Mr.Neighbor Man with your cool power tools!--and decided why not try out this paper piecing thing. And ya know what??? I LOVE IT!!! I can do triangles now! Points match up!! I'm so excited!! No more sticking to simple little squares--YAY!!! They were getting a little boring I gotta say! So here is my first block--Roads to Rome. Come on I had to do that one! My family is from Roma!! I did notice after doing one part that template b is off and bigger then the others. So i figured out what it needed to be and remade it myself! Here she is...

Kyiav10 06-02-2008 03:54 PM

Very nice. I haven't had the guts to try paper piecing yet. YET. But when I do I hope my first attempt comes out this nice. Great job.

Kyia

zyxquilts 06-02-2008 03:57 PM

Yes you can!!! You did a beautiful job & I love the colors :D :D :D

Granny Cat 06-02-2008 04:00 PM

that is absolutly beautiful I love the colors and the points are perfect...I'm a new quilter and I am so tierd of making the nine patch I'm ready to try something new this really inspires me... now I guess I need to learn what paper piecing is and how to do it....

adyldrop 06-02-2008 04:01 PM

I went to the qulter's cache website and did her tutorial first. Then I went through all her patterns and looked at all the paper piecing ones---I have a nice little list now! It's soo easy!

Granny Cat 06-02-2008 04:10 PM

I love the Quilters cache what is the name of the pattern used in this picture?...well I know where I am going as soon as I can to get paper piecing instructions Thank You...

adyldrop 06-02-2008 04:22 PM

http://quilterscache.com/R/RoadstoRomeBlock.html

there you go. On the page is a link for the tutorial on how to start paper piecing

Mamagus 06-02-2008 04:33 PM

What I really like about paper piecing is
1.the really pretty pictures that can be done.
2. How straight everything is
3. How pointy the points are everytime!

BUT it drives me crazy!

I have a really hard time with figuring out sizes of paches to use and the angles they will ultimately lie in!

What a great LOVE-HATE relationship I have going with it!

QuiltingTurtle 06-02-2008 04:34 PM

You did an excellent job.. I have experimented a little. I am not good at all :(

Roben 06-02-2008 04:38 PM

Way to go, ady!! Mariner's Compasses are not far behind!!!

adyldrop 06-02-2008 04:39 PM

awww i'm sure you can turtle!! Hell i say if I can anyone else here can too! Ma magus I haven't had that problem but I did put the piece wrong side up or in the wrong spot quite a few times. Ya gotta be careful with frogging on paper piecing so ya don't rip the paper! I learned that a bunch of times today. Good news is I think the lesson finally stuck!

Aww thanks guys!!!!! I definitely boosted my ego with this one---I can piece and match up corners now!!

barnbum 06-02-2008 04:41 PM

I LOVE that!! I'm half Danish--and it has a Danish feel/look to it. All that red and white. :D Boy--you're a quick learner!! No stopping you now!!

mgshaw 06-02-2008 04:50 PM

Very very pretty! excellent job!!! So are you going to do a quilt with that pattern or just the practice block?? I vote on a quilt

adyldrop 06-02-2008 04:55 PM

oh it'll be a lap quilt for me!! hee hee hee

jacquemoe 06-02-2008 05:52 PM

Ady!!! You did a TERRIFFIC JOB!! You go, girl. I've never tried paper piecing but I've seen how it is done and it looks fairly easy. However, I also hear that a lot of people have trouble or are afraid to try it. CONGRATULATIONS on your perfect block.

adyldrop 06-02-2008 05:54 PM

thanks jacq!! now i just gotta practice that free motion quilting. i find that scary but i wanna try it!! cripes i got the foot for it! minus well right? then maybe one day i can make something as purty as you have jacq!!

Harmony 06-02-2008 05:54 PM

Your block is PERFECT! This will make a beautiful lap quilt! Do you want to put sashing between the blocks?

bj 06-02-2008 05:58 PM

Wow, kiddo! You did an excellent job. I love the block and the colors!

DreamXer 06-02-2008 05:59 PM

It looks fab! Love the colours! Can't wait to see your lap quilt all done! Will it have only this block or will you do a sampler? Did you have fun tearing all the paper out? :)

adyldrop 06-02-2008 06:07 PM

no i think i'd like to keep it without sashing so you can really see the pattern. Every other quilt i've done had sashing. Down with the sashing! haha! It'll just continue with the same block. i'm my mother's daughter. i love flying geese! Thanks for the votes of confidence!
I did enjoy the paper ripping janet! hehe! i cheated and lade sure i left it in around the edges so i can match each block up to one another!

tlrnhi 06-02-2008 06:19 PM

WOOHOO!!
I was scared to do paper piecing until one of the BOMs was paper pieced. I did it and I was like WOOHOO, WOOHOO!!
I love it now!

Chele 06-02-2008 06:22 PM

joyful_noise 06-02-2008 07:46 PM

That is just wonderful ! You did an excellent job on this........and I love the color choices too ! Your points are just perfect. :P  :P  :P Give yourself a big pat on the back for this one.

Celeste 06-02-2008 08:04 PM

That is really lovely and I'm so glad the little glitches (wrong side of fabric) did not discourage you!

barbsbus 06-02-2008 08:05 PM

I love to paper piece but insteade of using paper for the foundation I use muslin. That way I don't have to rip off the paper. I just trace the pattern from the paper onto starched muslin and it works like a charm. But if I am doing anything that isn't going to be washed like the 2" pictures I do for greeting cards I do use card stack and I don't attempt to take off the paper backing. It's a great way to make a lot of fun projects.
Looks like you are well on the way of making many wonderful quilts.

grammo013 06-02-2008 11:07 PM

LOVE THIS BLOCK AND THE COLOR IS PERFECT.

Course I lovve red and would use only red if it was up to me lol

terrific job i also have just started pp and hope mine comes out as beautiful as yours.

(darn now I need to look for red fabric hehe)

Hey, great job! It'll be awhile before I atempt paper piecing as I'm new to this quilt stuff

Cathy M 06-03-2008 07:11 AM

How much did you drink to accomplish this incredible work of art? The last block of the month was not a pretty sight here. I was worried that I would run out of wine and chocolate before it got done. My hat is off to your greatness :):):):) Personally think that paper piecing was created by a sadist.... sigh...

Ady - I thought this was a portrait of you!!!! :D

I love to paper piece but find ripping out the paper a pain, doing it on a foundation of muslin or vilene works really well, and avoids the problem of pulling out of shape when you are doing lots of angles such as mariners compass etc.

Its abit weird at first as you are sort of working back to front - but as you found once the penny drops - you will never look back!!

Well done, its gonna be a lovely lap quilt - AND I think you should start practising free motion, you will have great fun, Karla (Barnbum) is loving it now, and I have got the hang of it now...needs practice practice practice but its FUN!! :D

quilter1962 06-03-2008 01:20 PM

Ady, it's so pretty & looks perfect to me. there you go I told you you'd be able to do PP.

Going to look on the site as my strip for my Round Robin next month is Triangles so I may adapt the corner block into a strip, many thanks

There will be no stopping you now, you should make more of these blocks into a quilt. Love to know what you decide, & more pics please.
