I went to a guild meeting last night. It was a hectic afternoon and I forgot to bring needles and stuff with me like they said in the email. It was ok though. They were more than willing to share and look what we made last night! These could get addictive I'm afraid......I've already found me a clear plastic container to set up a kit to take with me. And my application and dues are in the mail. I planned on joining last night but wouldn't you know it the atm was down and I didn't have time to go to another one before the meeting and of course I didn't have the checkbook. There were a LOT of people there last night. They said they made 97 of the little kits they gave out for the hexagon and they used all of them. There are usually about 80 at the meetings they said. I've tossed the idea about joining around for a year now and hopefully this will be something I enjoy.

Yea!! Have a blast. :-)

I'm glad you found such a welcoming group!
Is the flower hand pieced? Do you plan to make more? What size is each hexagon? I have found hexagons of about 2" are easy enough to machine piece -- just mark where the seams will cross and stop right there.

humbird 02-22-2011 11:25 AM

Way to go ginnie2!!! Beautiful flower, and yes, they are addictive!! Have fun!

ginnie6 02-22-2011 11:26 AM

yes its hand pieced and just under 2"....I think I will make more. It will be something I can take with me when I have to wait or when riding.

Shemjo 02-22-2011 11:29 AM

Congratulations! I love my guild, meetings, people, activities, and location, and..... Can you tell I love my guild?

lydialee 02-22-2011 11:43 AM

Is there a tutorial on making these? They look very fun, and make a beautiful quilt.

Lilrain 02-22-2011 11:45 AM

You will enjoy the guild, I am sure. I have been a member of ours for 23 years this month. And you meet so many nice people, too. I think all of my local friends are quilters!

montanajan 02-22-2011 11:51 AM

I began these English paper-piecing Grandma's flower garden pieces a couple years ago - fun take-along project.
One 'trick' I learned at a meeting is to punch a small hole w/ hole paper punch in middle of each paper & use short straight pin through hole to keep fabric in place while hand-sewing.
Also, until each petal is sewn to another on all sides, do not remove the cardboard form. Maybe you already knew this, but just in case...

ginnie6 02-22-2011 11:52 AM

the pattern came from here and they had permission to share it
www.ciaspalette.com/categories/ideas/html

there's supposed to be a tutorial on there too the paper I got says.

SueDor 02-22-2011 12:31 PM

Good work!

mommamac 02-22-2011 01:02 PM

looks like you're enjoying the guild already. Isn't it fun to be with quilters & talk shop.

ann clare 02-22-2011 01:03 PM

Congrats. Lovely flower

blossom808 02-22-2011 01:04 PM

Great. I love purple

julia58 02-22-2011 01:14 PM

use short straight pin through hole to keep fabric in place while hand-sewing.

I don't understand what this is about, can someone please explain.

humbird 02-22-2011 01:26 PM

There are many sites with instructions. This one is pretty nice. Google grandmothers flower garden tutoral. You will come up with many

dixiebelle162002 02-22-2011 01:31 PM

Sounds like a great group and I love the piece that you made.

when you start sewing/basting the fabric around the paper put a pin thru the paper and fabric to hold them together and still.

Lockeb 02-22-2011 03:09 PM

That is super..and the guild is a great time to get out and share ideas and have fun!!!!

yetta 02-22-2011 03:14 PM

good job, enjoy your guild

Sue Fors 02-22-2011 03:23 PM

I made a small EPP wall hanging. But, I've said many times that if I knew how to do this when my kids were young and in sports; I'd have several full size quilts around!

Sue Fors 02-22-2011 03:25 PM

YOu can buy bags of the hexagons. They come in all different sizes, and are reusable.

Tussymussy 02-22-2011 03:32 PM

Congratulations. Welcome to English pieced patchwork. It is nice and easy to do and grows very quickly. It is also useful to use this method when you are creating blocks that have a lot of very tiny pieces in them.

clem55 02-22-2011 04:15 PM

sure is pretty, and the guild sounds like a good one!

quiltjoey 02-22-2011 04:24 PM

Hi Ginnie: Where is Spring Industries in Ft. Mill? I live in SC and go to Charlotte quite often to visit relatives. Would love to shop for fabric at that store...
Thanks

Heck yeh, these are a blast. I have a kit all set up as well. Yours is beautiful. Have fun, glad you had a good time.

CQMadhatter 02-23-2011 04:03 AM

Trust me they are very addictive. I have adapted mine to
QAYG so I am always with a needle in hand!

dove 02-23-2011 04:21 AM

adorable!

penducksue 02-23-2011 05:31 AM

Love paper piecing. Others probably know but there is a site called Paper Pieces.com that sell many different pieces for quite reasonable prices with very good customer service.I usually projects going since they are easy to slip into my purse for "waiting moments".
There is a woman in my guild making a grandmothers flower garden in which each flower has a theme--center and petals are coordinated like dogs, cats, food with appropriate condiments etc. It is gorgeous!!!

HisPatchwork 02-23-2011 06:49 AM

I like doing the English paper pieced hexagons too. I have a project going that I can take with me for handwork.

RuthFru 02-23-2011 07:59 AM

You did a nice job. You will enjoy the guild and also learn so much from the ladies. I belong to 2 guilds and really enjoy both of them. I have learned so much from the meetings and workshops. Have fun.

Lady Jane 02-23-2011 08:29 AM

What a great job!

golo8 02-23-2011 09:25 AM

the hexagon flower is cute... I need to get started on some of those.... sounds like you found a nice group

IBQUILTIN 02-23-2011 09:36 AM

A guild is always fun. Good fellowship, good classes, good info, good community involvment, etc. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do ours

Faiwee 02-23-2011 11:28 AM

I'm sorry I missed the meeting. I would have liked to have made one of those.

Floralfab 02-23-2011 12:34 PM

Some one here had posted pics of this pattern I think they were made by her grandmother and I got inspired and bought the plastic templates at Joann's last week. I havn't tried it yet but plan to do so. Your's looks great. Have fun making them.

vickimc 02-23-2011 03:44 PM
