I finally finished the quilt made of ties for my friend

I posted about making this quilt over a year ago. It is made from the ties my friend's late husband wore to work. He was a grade school principal. I had no idea what I was doing, but all the links and ideas from the board helped me through this. I think I have attached the photo, let's see!

you did a terrific job

Your quilt looks very nice. Ties can be a pain to sew with, they are so slippery.

Belfrybat 02-13-2013 03:12 PM

Very nice! How large is it? A friend talked to me about making a quilt from her deceased husband's ties, but she only has 12-14. I wondered if I could cut them in half and use both ends in a Dresden design.

You did a beautiful job!

great job its veryt pretty!!!!!

This one is about 45 by 45 finished size. You need twenty points. If you take the ties apart you can get two points from each one. I used a dresden ruler and extended it to get the size. I wish I had used iron on stabilzer before I cut them, it would have made the finished plate easier to quilt.

Very, very nice. She will love it and I am sure it will become a family heirloom.

I regret not keeping all of my dad's ties when he passed away. He wore one every day for over 50 yrs. He had a BIG collection. But at his funeral each of the pal bearers wore one of his ties. It was very sweet and touching. My husband wore my favorite of my dad's that looks like a stained glass window. So at least I have THAT one.

Thanks for all the very nice remarks. I was really unsure of how the final project would work right up to starting the quilting.

If you don't have enough you could put a "fabric tie" every other one or however many extra you needed......

MamaBear61 02-14-2013 03:36 PM

What a lovely thing to do for your friend, she will treasure this.

I wonder what it would look like if your Dresden points were alternating wide end of the tie and narrow end of the tie. I would have to work on the math for this one to see if you could make it work

Jim's Gem 02-14-2013 05:07 PM

Very nice!!!!

Quiltmaniac2010 02-14-2013 05:45 PM

What a beautiful idea for those ties! Great job! I especially like the center motif, just really adds to it.

Moonglow 02-15-2013 03:00 AM

Nicely done and very creative.

debcavan 02-15-2013 03:26 AM

I especially like that fussy cut center and love the quilting.

pdriggs 02-15-2013 04:10 AM

Thanks, the center motif is a redwork old schoolhouse. I used batting when I embroidered it, so it has a nice puffy look.

ghquilter53 02-15-2013 06:17 AM

Nice idea.

Krystyna 02-15-2013 06:20 AM

That is so touching. I'm sure she will love it. The little cabin in the center is such a sweet element. Well done!

Mariposa 02-15-2013 06:23 AM
