After a year or so now drooling over the finds that borad memeber have I finally found one of my own!
We went to a city wide rummage today in Saukville and look what I found. Only $20.00. Like a true quilter I did ask if the woman selling it had any idea as to the history of it. Who made it or where it came from. No luck there. So now as I get it home and washed and dried I see that the batting is very clumpy. There is some hand stitched quiling but not much which explaines what happened to the batting. I am thinking about taking it apart and re sandwiching and quilting it. But then I think again maybe I should leave it how it is and keep the integraty of the person that spent so much time on it. Not that they will ever know - but I keep coming back to that. I would like to fix the batting - do more quilting - and put a binding on it. What would you do? |
I'd take it apart and use new batting. Beautiful quilt!
I agree! New batting and re-quilt it! It is beautiful!!
Yes, You can make this quilt sing!:) Beautiful!!
Ditto!! :D
It is a beautiful quilt, and does not appear to be old enough to be of historical value. The piecing looks good in the pictures. I would definitely take it apart and re-quilt it.
I vote that way too. It is a beautiful quilt.
I'm with the others -- take apart, replace batting, and quilt. Beautiful find!
Oh good!!!! Thanks for the encouragement! Now I won't feel any guilt! :)
Its funny when I looked at it outside it was folded up on a hanger. I really did not know how big or what the pattern was. My DH made sure we did not leave without it. I have a hard time when it comes to stuff like this. I never know if I want to spend the money on it. Now that I have it I am soo glad I did. Yes - the pieceing looks really good and although I don't know I would choose those particular colors I am sure we will find somewhere wonderful to put this in our house. We have quilts in almost every room now :) Thanks for the input. Now I know what my next project will be! |
I agree. I would take it apart and use new batting and backing and finish it off. A quilt top that beautiful and intricate needs to be shown off. And the best way is to 'fix it' so that it can be used and displayed, the way the original quilter intended.

a great find! I'm with the others - the top is worthy of a good batting that won't look worse over time. Go for it!

Beautiful quilt !!! :-D
beautiful i vote new batting
I think I'd take it apart & put new batting in. It wouldn't keep you very warm if the batting is all bunched up. And it wouldn't look very good, either.
New batting.

The work of taking it apart and redoing it would be worth the time and effort.
Pretty colors!
It is a beautiful quilt. I am with everybody else, I would take it apart and put new batting on it.
That is a beautiful quilt!! I'm glad you're going to rescue it and give it a new life!
I am a little surprized. All of us agree......this must be a land mark post. Usually we differ on what we would do, but not this one. A new batting will give it new life.
beautiful! great find!!
Pretty
Beautiful
It really a beautiful quilt. I would take it apart and fix it.
The piecing and the fabric appear to be in such good shape - I agree: take it apart, replace the batting and quilt it in a way that it deserves to be. It is a nice piece and will live on longer with your assistants and TLC.
I think you fixing it is a great tribute to the original maker of the quilt. You now will have your love and her's in the quilt and it make you and the org. quilter have something in common the quilt.
The quilt is beautiful. I would take it apart, use new batting, quilt it, and use it!
WOW!!!! Lucky you! glad you saved it!
That is one beautiful quilt
wow thats a nice find
Gorgeous!
Sounds like old all cotton batt that had to quilted about every square inch to stay put. Aren't you glad we have new batting that doesn't do that? She's a beauty and will be real nice with new batting.
