I had to make up the pattern for this one!

My brother's wife is having a birthday this Sunday, and he wanted a quilt for her gift. He asked me to make a queen-sized one in blue, with a great big heart on it, with their initials S + S in the middle. I could do anything else I wanted to it. EXCEPT "dumpster blue"......which she hates. I've had this fabric for years, and had no idea what to do with it, so this seemed perfect for it. What do you think?

orangeroom 02-26-2013 04:23 AM

Debbie, I think you did a wonderful job! I love how you utilized the different designs in the S's. Looks to me that you fulfilled his requests to a "T."

DebbieJJ 02-26-2013 04:39 AM

Thank you all! My DH made the design for the "S" (which is kind of funny-shaped, but if you knew my brother, you'd understand that reference to his humor!) I told my DB that I got the better end of the bargain for making this quilt.... he's a mechanic, and did some work on our two vans and only charged us for the parts! Then he reset the automatic locks on my van for free. So I told him I'd do the quilt in exchange for all the labor I didn't pay him for. The fabric was from an estate sale, the backing was from a bolt I bought on sale, and the "batting" was a blanket I bought on clearance for $1.00! So I only had the labor I put in it myself, and I had 2 months to work on it......I DID come out the winner on this one!

I just finished it yesterday and I still have it. Her birthday is March 3rd, so she won't get it until then. Also, I meant to clarify that I didn't try to go the "cheap" way on everything, it's just that the fabric was the right colors (and Daisy Kingdom brand fabric), and the backing was on sale from an LQS. So I feel that I got the look my DB wanted.

gabeway 02-26-2013 05:56 AM

I think you accomplished it very well! Great job!

Judging by the looks of the quilt, I'd say your SILcame out the winner!

The two above said what I was thinking. I think it's great when a family member thinks enough of your talent to request something. You did a super job on this and you can feel the love. Please wish them well for me. BrendaK

You made a very lovely quilt. I love your fabric choices and combinations.

What a great quilt and it will be loved.

mtkoldra 02-26-2013 11:45 AM

very pretty and very unique

ging10ging 02-26-2013 11:48 AM

Looks very pretty nice to me. Maybe you could put a pink bow at the top of the heart for a little color but it looks nice the way you did it. I especially like the heart shape. She will love it when she sees it. Sue

Pollytink 02-26-2013 11:50 AM

Gorgeous!!! She's bound to love it! (what is Dumpster blue? Blue is my favorite color.....in nearly every shade! but never heard of this one!)

I had to laugh at this question, since everyone looks at me funny when I say that. I'm sure I looked at my DB funny when he told me that too! Anyway, it's the blue that they put on the dumpsters here. I've seen some green ones, but most of them are dark blue around here.

Judith1005 02-26-2013 02:53 PM

I like it. Very special. The fabrics have a wonderful shabby chic feel. Very pretty. Hope it's well received.

hperttula123 02-26-2013 04:55 PM

That is great. Great choice of fabric. :) I even love the stripes you used on the boarders. I have some stripes I've been hanging onto, think it's going to get used for bindings now. :)

fxsts93kf 02-26-2013 08:08 PM

Really beautiful and unique! And I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I can understand being happy that you were able to make something so wonderful for very little cost. Especially these days!

MamaInRed 02-26-2013 08:41 PM

This made me smile. You did a lovely job creating such a sweet quilt.

DebbieJJ 02-26-2013 10:38 PM

Thank you for the compliments! About the striped binding, I had to piece short pieces together to get it long enough, but that's the only fabric that looked right when I tried to match fabrics for the binding. The pieces actually came from the back of the heart cut-out in the middle of the quilt. I had very little of this one fabric to begin with, but it was perfect for this quilt. By the way, my DB came by Tuesday evening about 5 p.m. to see it, and he LOVED it! He will pick it up on Saturday.

AnnT 02-27-2013 03:55 AM

It looks great! I'm sure it will be treasured.
