I just learned Hawaiian Quilting!

I learned this technique from a woman who lived in Hawaii. The traditional pattern is cut from folded fabric, much like we used to do to cut out snowflakes as children. It is then needle-turned applique' (new to me) and then "echo" quilted by hand. Quite a stretch outside of my box, but I really enjoyed it. I am going to turn it into a large tote bag. Others are choosing to make pillows, but I figure, one can never have too many bags (or is that diamonds, or shoes)? Hahaha.

Very cool! I like how it turned out. Please post the tote when you get it done. And I think the answer is all of the above a girl can't have to many totes, diamonds, shoes, or Fabric. :-)

pastimesquiltdesign 06-13-2012 05:34 AM

I didn't know the patterns were cut out like a snowflake. That's really cool. You did a lovely job. Peggy

Nice job. I really appreciate this technique, as I had a friend who also lived many years in Hawaii and did beautiful HQ. Sadly, she and her sister were killed by a drunk driver, and I miss her vivacious personality so much. A tote is always a good idea to make use of something special!

Very NICE.

thx for sharing I have always wondered how they got that pattern, never thought or a snowflake cutting pattern.

Homespun 06-13-2012 05:50 AM

Great work!

Rebecca VLQ 06-13-2012 05:51 AM

Love it. My sis lived in Hawaii for several years, and got me a couple books with patterns. I have needle turned a 13" breadfruit and went once around with hand quilting...but GAH! I'm so slow! I'll be a hundred before I finish!

DoriDeS 06-13-2012 06:20 AM

labug 06-13-2012 06:25 AM

Beautiful! Great Job!

DollyMomma 06-13-2012 06:29 AM

Great job, and such a cool and different idea (I do not think I have ever seen this before) esspecially for a quilt as you go since I do not have a long arm...I have not really attempted a real "quilted" type of quilt - thanks for sharing.

azwendyg 06-13-2012 06:32 AM

Beautiful work!!!

Mariposa 06-13-2012 06:34 AM

Lovely piece! You've done an excellent job on this! :)

Tweety2911 06-13-2012 07:06 AM

It's beautiful and so is your quilting. Handbag sounds like a perfect choice for this block.

Hulalulu 06-13-2012 07:24 AM

Aloha -- beautiful job. It's easy to loose a sense of time here, and slow down and relax, no hustle-bustle of having to finish anything! And the time to reflect while doing hand work is a joy. Hope you enjoy your new tote bag -- it will get many complements by quilters everywhere.

luvstoquilt 06-13-2012 07:43 AM

Lovely! I had no idea they were cut like snowflakes! I know your tote will be stunning!

knitnnan 06-13-2012 08:52 AM

That's so very pretty! Love it in the blue... I've seen many other colors and didn't care for them as much as this one. Can't wait to see your tote.

"Others are choosing to make pillows, but I figure, one can never have too many bags (or is that diamonds, or shoes)? "

I have a friend who says she never asks for diamonds because her husband told her that diamonds make her look fat.
Love it!

azam 06-13-2012 09:12 AM

Very nice, this is something on my "to do" list. I like your idea of keeping it a small project rather than a large quilt. Be sure to share your finished tote with us.

I love needle turn applique Hawaiian blocks. If you are interested there is a great website for patterns and supplies. It ispacific rim quilt company at www.prqc.com. jam currently making a centerblock of turtles surrounded by dolphins. The other blocks will all be Hawaiian. I am having fun with mine and I do them when watching Tv and don't want to be in my sewing room. The 41" vented has taken me about a week and I am about half. Done and I find it very relaxing.

Awesome site! Makes my attempt look like what it is - a beginner's - hahaha - but what fun it was and I LOVE how it turned out. I'm working on the tote back and sides now...to be continued...

It's gorgeous, and almost...almost sounds too easy! I'm guessing fabric doesn't cooperate as easily as paper when folding and cutting such intricate patterns. You did a wonderful job!

quiltsRfun 06-13-2012 01:43 PM

I did a similar design years ago. Haven't made mine into anything yet, it's still just a block. I love Hawaiian quilts and have every intention of someday making a full-size quilt.

Sandee 06-13-2012 03:25 PM

You did a fantastic job!

malega 06-13-2012 03:29 PM

That is so very nice.

judy363905 06-13-2012 04:56 PM

WOW lovely job.... Do you remember the name of pattern you used. I took a class on Quilt University and we did a "Bread Fruit" pattern...I finished the applique' but not all the echo quilting... You did a beautiful job

It might have been a hibiscus bud, I know it was some flower name. I was just given the pattern to trace onto my folded fabric...

Maureen 06-13-2012 06:08 PM

We had a woman from Hawaii speak at our Guild meeting and she had a class the following day. I didnt get my name in in time or I would have learned this too. Her name was Nancy something from Pacific Rim Quilting. Her trunk show was amazing.

beatys9 06-13-2012 06:13 PM

Nice job. I love Hawaiian quilts - I grew up there but I'm not much for applique and have never tried to hand quilt so I'll just admire yours...:)

sewgull 06-13-2012 06:34 PM

So very pretty

burchquilts 06-13-2012 07:10 PM

That is just spectacular! When I was in Maui (eons ago), the Marriott we stayed in had these beautiful quilts hung all thru the hotel & it was all the could do to drag me away from them to go see the sights of Maui... LOL! Your version is just beautiful... I love the soft blue. Thanks for sharing it with us!

nabobw 06-14-2012 04:21 AM

That is wonderful. I've been eyeing these up but haven't tried it yet. They are just amazing.
