I make the things I want to.
3 Attachment(s)
I am having fun making the things that I want to make. Yes they will be put up for sale but no pressure because I think if I like someone else might too. Made a couple of elephants and have one stretched on canvas. I did get lecture from one of the "real" studio artists on color, but this is what I liked and this is what I made. So there. Next is a piece I have been working on for a looming September show. Finished cutting out the piece from $50 ultra suede (and yes my choice of fabric was also criticized) and now going to quilt the red, white and blue backing. This is my first "hybrid" quilt so I will now work on it at home. No more negativity or quilt police allowed. So there. You will be among the first to see what I make and you can like it or not. After all it is going into an art gallery and my rules since I call it an art quilt! Sometimes I just want to have fun.

Well done and lovely looming also!
Good job!!
Not sure what the 2nd and 3rd pictures are about but the elephant looks amazing.
Don't worry about what someone else says....I always think, do they pay my bills? Then I don't care what you think! Besides, being an artist is just that....letting your own thinking and creativity flow as you see fit. Do what you love and thank you for sharing. Kirsten |
Very pretty. The red sure shows off the elephant very well.
I love it! I always say that it’s art, not science which frees me up tremendously!
I also like your elephant, bright and elegant. It looks like it's right out of Africa. I look forward to seeing what you do with the material in pictures 2 and 3. I am interested in how artists create their work. Thanks for sharing.
My artwork is "out of the ordinary", usually made for my enjoyment only so it is often criticized, with suggestions for improvement. The same goes with my scrappy quilts. I really like ScubaK's advice and will have to remember it when the time comes. |
I like your elephant--very nice
Your elephant is incredible! I totally agree with you regarding your make what you want to make philosophy. I never enjoy my projects when I am hampered with requests that hold my creativity back, even someone else picking the colors can make it hard for me to complete a project.
Also I want to know more about the suede...... Please post a picture when you can! |
You go girl! A phrase that came to mind from way back when. :)
I am a believer of having fun when I make my projects. Everyone has an opinion and that is fine with me. What is important is you are having fun in the creative process. An art quilt should be an expression of you and your likes. Thanks for sharing a picture of the elephant....turned out amazing! |
The colors in the elephant project are wonderful. Very vibrant.
Well done. That’s what we all do, make what we like!
I like the elephant. All art is individual and personal. Saying it had issues is like Michael Angelo telling Picasso his work was not done right
He is a magnificent fellow!
Go with what pleases you. I gave up trying to please someone else A LONG TIME AGO.
Go for. Quilt police should just police their stuff.
I love your elephant quilt and I wholly embrace the declaration to make what you enjoy!
It's always best to make what you like. I do the same. There are so many people that seen to want to reach into your sewing room and tell you what you should be sewing. I ignore them too. My time and talent. I do like to give away finished projects and not just finish "kits" that someone else has assembled. Love your elephant.
Quilt police want control. Good girl for not giving it to them. Africa pictures show beautiful, bright sunsets...which your orange fabric reflects. Enjoy doing it your way. :-)
I like your elephant, I think he's lovely.
You rock! The elephant is super!
Very nice work. The red background fabric sure makes the elephant stand out so wonderful
The elephant is fabulous
It's so wonderful to see anyone doing exactly what they want to do! Your elephant is gorgeous and your attitude is inspiring.
Your quilt; your way. I think it is stunning. I especially like the orange pineapple block background. Quite unique. You have been blessed with a wonderful talent & ability. Stunning job & congratulations. Kathy

The third photo is of coverlets that have been handwoven. As a weaver, I can attest to the fact that weaving coverlets is as least as much work, or more, than quilting is. These are lovely coverlets, and I hope you use them in a way that brings honor to them.
The elephant on red is unique and amazingly beautiful! When people would critize or disagree my late husband, he would shrug his shoulders and say, "what are they going to do, turn me into a frog?" I say that to myself a lot now days. Keep up the good work. The weaving is lovely!
Ditto to what everyone has said. I collect elephants and I have fallen in love with yours. BrendaK
I love your elephant too and am glad you do not let the negativity hinder you and your art! Maybe they are jealous!
You do beautiful work- wow!!!!!!!
Looks so nice and making what you like is the way to go.
Love your elephant, looks like he could walk right out of the quilt!
Love the elephant art quilt. I never worry about what anyone says about my projects, they are mine and no one else has to like it. Except my husband and he isn't a negative person! LOL
run away from those people. Your work is wonderful.

I also love your elephant! I get a lot of unsolicited advice too. Once I hear "you should....." I tune them out. I did tell one person "interesting idea...you should take up quilting and try that. I'd love to see how that works for you!" Keep doing what you do!!
I like your elephant!!! I wonder what that " artist " would have said about your elephant color if you made a Pink one. LOL Do your Own thing!!!!
Your elephant is wonderful! Also, I see some other things in the background (fish & Fox) I really like too!
Unbelievable work so beautiful from just a moment in time
Great job on the elephant!
