I am making a first-granddaughter quilt. The nursery is baby pink and zebra. I have made Eleanor Burns' "First Love" squares in pinks with white on white, but they look pretty pale. I want the quilt to be delicate and sweet. Do the people on this wonderful board have suggestions on how to put them together? I took a picture of a few of the squares, and some fabrics I have. I also have all the pinks in the squares and more white. Please help!

Look at this quilt. Think about using this as sashing. Nine patch in the corner and then three strips of fabric. Hope you like this idea |
I would keep the whole thing pink and white. If you sash, using the white on white will float your hearts.
I like the bottom picture with the center not being a heart. Why not incorporate a zebra print heart in the center?
Just my opinion. If I were making the quilt I would sash them with the zebra print I see laying next to your block. Since this is what the nursery is done in, it would certainly match.
Darling blocks by the way  |
It's cute. Maybe you could lay the bottom zebra print out and position the heart squares on it to see what it would look like with a thin zebra sash. I kind of like mainladybug's idea about incorporating a zebra stripe in one of the hearts. Let us know what you decide.
I love the shade of pink you've used its so sweet. I think I would find a small mini print in the shades of the paisley print that you used on the heart in the far right square to use for sashing. Then if you have any of heart fabrics left, I would sew small strips together then cut them on the bias to make a binding and repeat the look of the strips in the hearts. It would tie together everthing so sweetly.
Where did you find this pattern? I make charity quilts for the preemie units at our area hospital, I sew with the group called Threads of Love. This would make a cute small quilt, they need to 30" sqaure so its hard to find good blocks to fit a 4 or 5" square. Chris |
Love all the fabrics, but I'm not sure the final outcome can be just "delicate & sweet" when your incorporating zebra print and black. how about delicately sweet with pizzazz and strength? I vote for the zebra heart (with some pink) in the center.
you could bind it in a zebra print to give it some punch too.
I think the zebra print for sashing would look good, for a small border as well. But, I would stick with the sweet pinks for the hearts. The overall look should go well in the nursery.
In my opinion, pastel and delicate is a viable option.
If you want to keep it delicate and sweet, how about satin for the sashing. It doesn't hold up as well but if that's what you want. Maybe some soft lace sewn in the edges. Maybe the center square should be embroidered with her name or something like that.
Boy I don't know. I love the hearts as is! :)

I had another thought, how about using the pinks & whites, & making a few log cabins blocks to blend in with the heart blocks. Just simple ones, they could even add another design to the quilt, but keep your soft pink look. I would use the zebra print on the other side, & maybe do some pink hearts on it, or something. Then it would be like a reversible quilt, one side soft & pink, the other, bolder, with the zebra print & pink! Just my thoughts.....

If you want to set off the hearts a bit, try doing a button stitch around each heart in a bright pink thread. It would still keep it pink & white, but would certainly set off the hearts.
I would use the blanket stitch around the hearts in black, use a thin zebra print for the sashing, one last border of pink, and bind with zebra/ zebra backing.
Not sure how I wold handle zebra print, but I too would blanket stitch around the hearts is a deeper color. another thing I did once was add lace around the quilt, and on another I attached tiny bows to add a little extra sparkle.

I used the same pattern for all of these heart quilts. Maybe the pictures will help you decide on how you want to piece your applique blocks together.
Love your hearts!
Just and idea.....How about some 3D pinwheels in zebra. |
Pretty hearts!
Those heart blocks are so sweet! I can't wait to see what you decide next :D:D:D

Can't help but I love your hearts.
If you want delicate you achieved it with the softness of your pinks and whites. Happymrs has a great idea with log cabin blocks and zebra print on reverse side.
I love the softness and delicateness of what you have done already. |

If you want to keep it sweet and delicate I wouldn't use zebra for the sashing or anywhere on the top- it would overwhelm the hearts, IMO. I would sash it in white to "float" the hearts, perhaps ad a bit of lace, make a pale pink border/binding, and then zebra print for the backing! :)
they are so sweet. I think a really light lime green would set them off for sashing. Pink and green are such good partners. I wouldn't go bright because I feel that would make them seem a tad too light and they are perfect just as they are, light and sweet like a new baby. That's my humble opinion.
I would definitely use a thin Zebra sashing with a pale pink border and a pink cornerstone in the Zebra. Love the pattern
Bright pink sashing with white corners and zebra for back and binding.
Thanks for the great response and advice! I'm still working on it. I flipped the hearts around in different directions and it totally changed the look! I will post pictures when I get a little farther along. I could still use suggestions!
How about laying the hearts with points together so they make a flower?
QUILTTILUDROP: How wonderful. There is lots of ideas you share for the baby pink quilt being made. They are lovely.

Your hearts are beautiful! As soon as I saw them this popped into my head.
- you could use a small black & white check for the border(to co-ordinate with the zebra stripes in the room) and one of the soft greens (from the leaves on the flowers) as the binding. I'd do the back in white muslin with thin pale pink ribbon bows at the intersections, and a white eyelit(sp?) ruffle. |

sashing maybe a soft mint green. I love the pink and zebra theme but this is from grandma and can be just soft and gentle.
It looks like there is a little yellow in the fabrics you used?? I think a pale yellow would be pretty..
Zebra sashing and then a border of the print with the little pink roses.
