I have one from my Mom too... She's gone as well, but she seems close enough to touch sometimes when I get that little machine out of it's little black home! What a wonderful find. These little machines are treasures!

Have it serviced if it's sat for years.. the motor has some little holes for lubricant, don't let them put machine oil in there! Your book will tell you everything you need to know to keep it running like a top! Have fun..

Oh... Kiss your Dad once for buying it, and then give him a big kiss and hug for not giving it away!

What a treasure - you'll love getting to know it again. And that little machine will make better button holes than the newer machines. Enjoy!

What a find! Your mother I'm sure saved it for a good purpose. Use it and remember her.

Awsome! You are the very proud owner of a Featherweight 221. These machines are known for their wonderful straight stitching, perfect for piecing quilts! I carry mine to quilt classes, sewing get togethers, even on vacation to piece quilt tops. Don't let this machine get away from you. They usually sell for $350 to $500, used. Mind is a 1948, the year I was born. It has a lot of attachments. I use it daily, piecing. Your pictures, make me think I need to get the attachments out, put everything together and take a picture, just so my sons don't separate items when I'm no longer around.

In reply to your question about Free motion quilting, I watched a lady demonstrate FMQ on a Featherweight at Paducah. You have to cover the feed dogs, and she said to set the stitch length at 0, then the dogs would just go up and down, not pull the fabric. You can cover the feed dogs with an index card. The lady at the AQS said she put one of those silicon sheets on the bed, the kind with just the needle hole cut out.
Good luck!

How fortunate you are to remember and find the machine. You will cherish it as I do my mothers 1930 treadle machine I am very happy for you. Wish I had one like yours.
