I found this hidden away in my parent's basement. My mother was never a sewer and I only remember her using this once when I was in 1st grade to make mini Christmas stockings. I used it a couple of times in the 80's and then totally forgot about it. Between them moving and then my mother passing away in 2004, I never thought about it again. I started seeing these beautiful old machines showing up on the board, and it sparked a thought. I happened to mention it to my daddy, and he said he thought it was in the basement. AND IT WAS!! The black case is musty spelling and is airing out in the garage. This is exactly how I found the machine with all the parts. I have yet to even dust it off! Off to the machine shop this weekend!

What a fantastic unearthing! :) enjoy

MonkeeGirl 04-29-2010 03:49 PM

According to the serial number the manufacturing began January 29th, 1957. That makes it 2 years older than I am!

I can't wait to get it serviced and be able to sew!!

earthwalker 04-29-2010 03:50 PM

Brilliant....what a beauty.

Barbm 04-29-2010 03:50 PM

You struck paydirt! Congratulations!

marsye 04-29-2010 03:53 PM

Looks like its in great shape!!

MonkeeGirl 04-29-2010 03:53 PM

My DH is in Phoenix and he says he can see me beaming! I'm so excited, I think I might pee in my pants!

gail-r 04-29-2010 03:54 PM

Wow, that is beautiful!! I'm so glad your father still had it. In looking at your pictures it just dawned on me that the feet we use today really haven't changed much. Guess it is one of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of things. I'm very happy for you and know you will treasure it.

Farmer Girl 04-29-2010 03:58 PM

WOW! She's a beauty!

AnnaK 04-29-2010 03:59 PM

My goodness it's a great thing for you to remember. What a great looking machine, with attachments no less.

amma 04-29-2010 04:13 PM

It is awesome you have one of these beauties, and the fact that it was your mom's makes it that much more exciting!!! I am doing a Happy Dance for you :D:D:D

Pam 04-29-2010 04:21 PM

Put a bar of Irish Spring soap, still in the box into the sewing machine box, it may absorb the odors.

Chigger Holler Quilter 04-29-2010 04:23 PM

Did you know you can find it's Birthday? There's a number on the bottom that allows you to find out. I don't know if it's published or if you call in. Bet someone else can tell you...or I'll ask my GF and she'll tell me again! I have two and she told me how when I first got them.
Yours is much more special because you know the history. I learned to sew on one, but my Mom traded it in for a newer model. :( Happy for you!

bearisgray 04-29-2010 04:23 PM

Awesome.

Isn't it so cool that it was still there for you when you were ready for it?

cabinqltr 04-29-2010 04:32 PM

That is wonderful. I would suggest you look at the manual and oil it, let it sit overnight and then get a scrap of cloth, thread the machine and give it a try. It may not need more than that. These machines are so very easy to maintain yourself, Do not take to shop unless all else fails. When you get it running well and decide to polish it( nothing abrasive, remember) I recommend you go to a Harley Davidson dealer and get a bottle of Harley Glaze. It is a liquid polish, does a beautiful job will not hurt the finish. I am just an old Granny that loves to play with featherweights. Have fun.

SuziC 04-29-2010 04:42 PM

GOOD FOR YOU

MonkeeGirl 04-29-2010 04:46 PM

Thank you everyone for the great words of joy.

Cabinqltr..I'll let DH do the oiling when he gets home. He loves to work on cars and motorcycles, might as well learn sewing machines. Already got the Harley Glaze, can't use anything else on the 2007 Soft-tail. Nice to know it'll work on the FW. BTW, I might need to go to HD...only 1/2 mile from the LQS!!!!! OHHHHHH, could I spend some BIG $$$$$$

alaskasunshine 04-29-2010 05:53 PM

I am so tickled you got that little baby out of storage. It is too late for your Featherweight innoculation, you have been bitten!!!  ;)

Harmony 04-29-2010 05:59 PM

Lucky girl! My grandmother had a machine like this. I have no idea what happened to it after she died--my grandad probably gave it away to somebody.

Deborah12687 04-29-2010 06:04 PM

WOW!!! you have found a wonderful prize of a machine you found in your basement. It looks brand new. Congrads on your find. Happy quilting to you.

mama's place 04-29-2010 06:08 PM

I have a question about these vintage machines.....can they be used to do free motion quilting? Anybody know? The feed dogs don't drop but can be covered. Just wondering. I have a couple of old Singers...not a Featherweight, though, darn!!

I was going to say the same thing with regard to the machine originally being her mom's..

That makes it even more priceless!

Way to go!

What a great thing to find!
Have a great time with your "new friend". :)

Leota 04-29-2010 07:04 PM

I just check what my little featherweight's bd was... Sept. 25, 1935. My mother bought it from the Singer dealer for $45 in 1966 for my Christmas gift. I learned to sew on this baby. At one point, it would not hold the tension. My dh worked on it and it's good as new now. Both my dds learned to sew on it and now I use it for teaching and quilting.

wvdek 04-29-2010 07:26 PM

You can also try pure charcoal (from the pet store). Place some in a container and set in the case then close the lid. Wait about three days and see if you need to leave it longer.

You are one lucky gal. Enjoy your beauty.

Marsye you did it to me again. I was going along reading and then hit your post and laughed so hard I almost p'd MY pants. You find the best pics.

sharon b 04-29-2010 08:28 PM
