I quickly pulled this one together over the weekend, marathon sewing. I saw the post last Friday on the I Spy quilt and just loved it ( that gal followed someone's pattern that is posted on site). Well, my father's 86 birthday is coming up and I didn't know what to get him. After seeing the two pretty I Spy quilts, I knew just what I was going to give him- An I Spy quilt. I took his interests from over the years to use as the theme: music, birds, sailing, money, space, dogs, travel, and baseball. Since his mother had been a quilter too, I found a fabric that looked like a quilt. I also used some fabrics that were scraps that my mom had sent me. I was able to send it in the mail Monday, my deadline. I had some frustrations with working with a fusible batting, which didn't work (that was a rant post of mine on Sunday).
I like this quilt pattern so much that I plan to use this theme quilt not only for children, but also for adults. I thank the two gals for sharing their pictures of their beautiful work; it was such a great inspiration for me.

What a very colorful quilt, I never thought of an I Spy for an adult. Good job.

vintagemotif 12-15-2010 12:39 AM

I never thought of an I Spy quilt for an adult either, but after seeing this pattern used I thought why not for an adult. I like this pattern so much for the I Spy quilt that I'm planning to make a couple of quilts using Christmas fabrics. I think this would make a fun and wonderful Christmas present for next year.

What a wonderful keepsake! This is one memory quilt that can be actively used without threat of damage as are the ones with pictures, etc. How do I locate the pattern as this would be great for the grandkids' I Spy?

cowpie2 12-15-2010 05:54 AM

I love how you used the hst to create movement in the quilt. I'll be filing this thought away for future use.

I didn't see a pattern, but Donna873 gave a simple way to create it here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-81866-2.htm

I of course didn't see this post; wish I did since it is a so much faster method. So, I cut 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 squares and made separate half squares. I arranged all the squares, then sewed squares into blocks of 4 squares. I then sewed the blocks into rows and sewed the rows together.
