Please excuse the clutter around it. This is currently set up in our weight room. So, as you can see BOB is taking a break on the hack rack. ;)

This is a Design-A-Quilt Model DAQ-555-3. My friend's Mother-In-Law had this machine for about a year. She passed away a couple of months ago. Her husband needed the space and decided to give it to me after my friend mentioning me to him. I am very excited. ;)

It is a short arm machine incase you were wondering. I've never worked with anything like this and am very tickled. :)

Wanted to share my photos with you.

Quilty Hugs,
Angie

Lucky you!

Angie, I have a short arm on a frame, and it has served me very well for 4 years. It does a great job with pantographs (which I see in your picture), and with free motion. I don't quilt for anyone but myself and friends and family, so it is very sufficient for that use. You will enjoy it!!

GreatStarter 10-12-2011 12:22 PM

Wow, how very exciting for you! First off did you think to write a "paper" thank you to the man who gave it to you? Second, good luck learning to use it. Don't stress as you learn to use it. Everything takes time to learn.
Now, go enjoy learning!

I am going to send him a Thank you card...with probably a gift card inside. I have been going back and forth with what to do for him. I am just in awe!

athomenow 10-12-2011 12:57 PM

Restaurant gift cards are always a hit with people. Expecially if they're older.

QuiltnNan 10-12-2011 12:58 PM

what a great gift. enjoy.

Zhillslady 10-12-2011 12:58 PM

Make him a quilt in memory of the woman who owned the machine. Even if you have nothing of her's to put in it just add that on the label.

Jingle 10-12-2011 01:00 PM

Nice set up and enjoy using it. Good for you.

Woohooo! Anything better then nothing. It looks like it is on a nice big frame.

I have the DAQ-12. I think mine is around 40 years old. These are fine machines, they are Jukis and are real workhorses.
Just keep an eye on the oil level!

sewnsewer2 10-12-2011 02:55 PM

WOW! Lucky you!

charismah 10-12-2011 05:54 PM

I actually have a binding machine from that company....and my friend took the mid arm set up ( that looks just like yours)

The company did go out of business.....but they are actually JUKI machines.

I hope that helps.

how wonderful!!!

BTW you can do anything a longarm can do with a shortarm you just have to roll the quilt back and forth more.

cdmmiracles 10-12-2011 06:16 PM

Wow that's awesome. You're very lucky!

jaciqltznok 10-12-2011 06:18 PM

wow..she looks HEAVY....have fun with her!

If this is an elderly widower, I think a dinner at your house would be a perfect thank you gift. Or you can always take him a cake or pie that you've made. I'll bet he misses home cooking.

AngieS 10-12-2011 07:27 PM

Thanks for all of your ideas. :) My only concern about making a memory quilt is how hard it will be on him. He lost his grandson a couple of weeks ago too. I feel so bad for him. He lost his wife then later the grandson that had moved in with him. Now his grand daughter has moved in with him. My friend is his daughter in law. She is the one that told me about the machine and mentioned to him that if he was going to get rid of it that I quilted.

My Short/Mid Arm set-up is in my Avatar.
Am sure you will produce many beautiful projects with your equipment.

My thoughts also. That would be a beautiful tribute to his wife and your friend.

That is definitely a wonderful gift. Thanks for sharing it with us too. Have fun learning how to use her.

NVDesertLady 10-13-2011 04:19 AM

WOW what a wonderful gift. The gentleman is an angle to gift this to you. His wife must be smiling down on him and you.

BarbM32 10-13-2011 04:23 AM

I think restrauant gift cards now and then or at home dinners would be great especially if on holidays if he has no family close. Maybe a Christmas gift like a button down the front sweater (old men get cold). You may or maynot realize just how great a gift he's given to you. I recently sold my longarm 15 year old for $2500 and that was cheap in this area. I have not been able to use it since 1998 due to health conditions for it was like new condition.

Sewfine 10-13-2011 04:41 AM

Wow! Good for you. I'm sure you will send him a lovely thank you note or gift.
