I've been making some quilts and quilted objects that are interactive and meant to be not only fun, but also educational.
The numbers quilt helps recognize numbers and can also be used to teach math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. I've made this a game by having kids toss a bean bag a couple of times and then add, subtract, etc. the numbers they hit. They have fun and learrn at the same time. I've made the same quilt but with the alphabet and it can be used in the same manner. I sewed a pocket to the back side to hold the bean bags. Love that placemat...is it made from felt?

The placemat (and 3 others just like it) were pieced with cotton fabris, quilted and bound just like any other quilted project. I wanted to be sure they were washable.
The face parts are pieces of fabric that were fused to timtex and satin stitched around the edges. It was all very easy and I'm really happy with the results. I'm already playing with ideas of other placemats to make for them. |
