I am still working on Blue's border, but thought I'd open this thread for anyone in the group to post their progress or finished work.
Hope everyone is doing well. Let me know if you need anything or have any problems. |

Okay, so this is just a little peek at Blue's Border. I'm far from done, and will have lots of clipping to do. There are so many colors in the center and other borders and it's pretty busy. I think the black border would be good as sort of a framing effect. I had planned on using a deeper purple for the paw prints, but they didn't show up very well.

Nix that. I've changed my mind.
|
  I do that about a dozen times before I settle on something.
You might want to remind everyone that this is the next to last round....remember that someone has to be able to FINISH it out next time...try to leave them something to do :-D I really struggled last year with one of the quilts that I was doing ...the person on the next to last round added such a fantastic and strong border that I couldn't add anything stronger to close it out...I was never happy with the end result. Just a thought to keep in mind... |

Hey, Terri, are you getting settled? I don't envy you....but, then again, it's fun to organize a new place.

good luck terri

Just wondering how everyone is doing on their borders. Mailing date is June 15. I can't believe this IRR has gone by so quickly.
I'm still working on Blue's...... Every night after work I go home and piece ears. |
Oh Ducky...that actually sounds painful!
|

Ok... I need some opinions please.
I had Ducky's quilt hanging up for a month, and as much as I love it, nothing would come. So last week I took it up to my favourite quilt shop, and had three most excellent ladies help me. They had the absolute perfect fabric and in about ten minutes flat I had a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel. I did want something a bit fancy but it wouldn't have fitted. And it would have made the last border difficult. So, I added a plain border in a fabric that has pretty much all the colours in it, and jazzed it up a bit with a couple of cat shapes and two gold butterflies. My question is..... does it need something in the top right corner? I think if I put another cat shape up there it will be too much. But perhaps a couple more butterflies would be nice. And as much as I'm tempted to add 4 or 5 gold butterflies all over, it's not my quilt and I don't want to completely take it over. So.... I will throw in a piece of the fabric I got the butterfly off so that if Ducky wants some more, she can add them. ;-) Taken at night with a flash, so the colours look a little off Close up of the cats and butterfly. They're not sewn yet, just sitting there. |
ps..... it IS square, it's hanging over top of some other stuff on my design wall so it's not hanging particularly well.
And I really hope I haven't broken any rules by not asking before encroaching on the border before mine. It's just that placing the applique shapes over the two borders just seemed right. |

Hey Blue....what a fabulous idea you and the wonderful ladies had!!! I think they play nicely on the previous border and I wouldn't think that you stepped on any toes doing that . I think it would be fine to put a few more butterflies in the top right corner...kinda pulls your eyes over the whole quilt!
BTW...I'm pretty sure this top belongs to Terri (but I'd be happy to take it from either one!), AND I LOVE how your Jane is shaping up on your design wall :D |
I'm not part of the IRR, but absolutely love the kitties chasing the butterflies over a couple of borders. I hope you finish it that way. :)
|
Quick question.... to whoever owns the centre, I don't suppose you have any fabric left over from the centre panel? More specifically, a largish flower? I have some butterflys cut out to put in the top right but would love to have a flower as well. Nothing I have here comes even close to matching, I'm not really a "flowery" person so have very limited florals in my stash.
|
Never mind, I have a better plan!

Nope, don't panic, I have a much better plan. Will take another day or so to finish, so will post photos when it's done. :)
|
I LOVE what you did with that center, Blue!!!!! I'm pretty sure Terri wouldn't want it, so just send it to me -- I'd claim it!!!!
I have the borders done and just have to sew onto your center, Blue. |

Terri's is done and in the post.... and I've just tidied my room and realised I forgot to add in the butterfly fabric in case you want some more butterflys! If you think it needs some more, send me your addy and I'll chuck the fat quarter in the mail. It's a lovely burgundy colour covered in the gold butterflys, perfect for applique. I would be inclined to add just another couple spread over the quilt, but I am totally willing to admit that I may be a bit mad for butterflys and would quite happily put them all over every top I do! LOL
The Whole Quilt - the colours do match, I swear, I can't get them to photograph accurately Bottom Left Corner Top Right Corner |
Hi Blue Chicken, love the quilt and the borders, I love cats and I think three is just right, uneven numbers are said to be much more visually interesting than even ones. Less has more power in the design if you know what I mean.
Gal PS Where in Gods own do you reside, I do not see many quilters from NZ, only one or two. |

Gal PS Where in Gods own do you reside, I do not see many quilters from NZ, only one or two. :D 8-) :D I made a quilt recently from a black and white block swap, and when I put them all together it just did nothing for me. So I got a fabric with large colourful butterflys on it, fussy cut them, and fused them on. It started with one or two..... and got rather carried away! LOL |
The black and white quilt is here....
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-23511-1.htm Since that photo I added a wide black and white border, and put a nice green vine with leaves in the bottom left corner, stretching halfway up one side and halfway along the bottom. It finished it off really nicely. It's still waiting to be quilted though! LOL |
Hi BC waving to you from a frosty night on the Canterbury plains between the Waimak and Rakaia rivers.
Gal |
Brrrrrrr...... it'll be cold down there! I grew up in Amberley, we used to go water skiing on the Waimak river. ;)
|
Much to old for water skiing these days ha ha!! Really liked your b/w quilt, had a sort of kiwi feel to it especially the fern. I thought the design was strong enough to hold its own without the butterflies IMHO.
Gal |
I'm far too old to water ski now too! ;)
I think I'm just not a black and white person, I needed some brightness in it. I absolutely love it with the butterflys. Unfortunately a friend of mine loves it even more so she's going to get it for christmas. :? Still, it's given me more ideas for other things, so onwards and upwards! |
Yip, know Amberley and love shopping in Rangiora, a new quilt shop there and a lady selling some nice quilting fabrics in Cust and a small shop in Darfield now too, so lots of lovely country stores to browse in. I love chasing the op shops for retro fabrics and scraps for my country scrappy quilts, I am only a beginner but just love my new found hobby!
Nice talking to another Kiwi quilter, just had to ask when I saw your Avatar as our local Pukeko swamp hen. Take good care now, Gal |
That upper corner with the butterflies is just beautiful, Blue.
|
Blue..I love how you incorporated the ribbon in with the butterflies...it is beautiful!

I still have the "clean up" to do on this, like re-measure and trim.....and I have to fix the lower righthand corner, as it doesn't want to lie flat. I tried to find as many batiks as I could to closely match the colors in the center and other borders. The pattern is called "Tesselated Cats" by Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn.

OMG!!!! Ducky it's gorgeous! Absolutely stunning! I love it, thank you!! :D  :-D
|
OH wow Ducky!!! How much more PURRR-fect could you get???? I love that!
|
Well, ladies, tomorrow is our mailing date. Is everyone ready? Any problems or questions? This will be our last one....and I can't believe this year has sped by so quickly.
|
I'm afraid mines gonna be a little late, partly because my life is a bit hectic, and partly because I got it late. I've got the fabric, and *think* I know what I'm doing. I'm hoping to get it out by the end of the month though. Sorry :-(
|
I think there'll be a few that are late.... remember we had that big ash cloud stop a whole lot of flights for a whole lot of time, so quite a few took longer to get where they were going.
