Jacob's Ladder Variation

3 Attachment(s)
Several years ago I made the quilt top from blue and brown scraps. It sat until I finally got a machine big enough to quilt it. Just finished, and this one's for hubby.

I used Jacob's Ladder blocks, but would anyone know if there's a name to this arrangement? Haven't been able to find one just like it on the internet.

Lovely finish...I’m sure DH is going to treasure it. You are doing a fantastic job on your FMQing.

SillySusan 08-24-2018 02:50 AM

Wow! Beautiful! You did a great job!

Battle Axe 08-24-2018 02:56 AM

You are sooooo talented.

When you arrange Jacob's ladder blocks like that it is a Buckeye beauty. But you have switched the light to form the squares on point, usually in a Buckeye Beauty the prints (or darks) form the square on point so in the blocks the HST unit is reversed.

Here is an example of a buckeye beauty done in the more traditonal way.

Edited to add, just found an on line shop that offered a class that has it set the way you have.

Ah, so that's what it is! A Buckeye Beauty with the values reversed.... Thank you Feline!

Love your kitty quilt and especially the paw print quilting. (Wonder if I could do those freehand....?)

Thank you for the kind comments, everyone.

Cute quilt!

MaggieLou 08-24-2018 06:41 AM

sewbizgirl, you just gave me a great idea to quilt one I'm making for my DD. My pattern is just a basic 9 patch but the center square is white. I wanted to do something in the center square but didn't know how to handle the rest of the quilt. Thanks.

Jules51 08-24-2018 09:05 AM

Wow, looks wonderful!

Sallybear6 08-24-2018 09:14 AM

I love the colors and the layout! Not letting my hubby see this or he will want one too :)

rryder 08-24-2018 09:59 AM

That's fantastic, Sewbiz! I love Jacob's Ladder blocks, there are so many different ways you can set them. Great use of white next to the darker scrappy parts-- emphasizes the secondary patterns and makes the whole thing sparkle. Your FMQ is looking good-- I bet you could do those paw print FMQ you mentioned, no problem.

Beautiful quilt and lovely quilting.

I was not familiar with the name "Buckeye Beauty", which is a nice name for it, but what I see is puss in the corner blocks (made from 4 - 4-patches) alternating with square in square blocks. Is that how you made it, or were those sub units of a bigger composition? I can't work out where one block begins or ends other than that. I love this modern looking interpretation from traditional patches!

Teen 08-24-2018 07:47 PM

This is so beautiful, Sewbiz.... Your FMQ gets better with each one you do...

sewbizgirl 08-24-2018 10:36 PM

Thank you, Teen. I love FMQ!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments.

Rose, I made the quilt with Jacob’s ladder blocks... 4 patches combined with HSTs.

JuneBillie 08-25-2018 09:44 PM

Beautiful quilt!!

NZquilter 08-26-2018 01:46 AM

I love blue and brown together! Beautiful quilt and your FMQing is great! I'm sure you husband is thrilled.

The pattern reminds me of the leader and ender project Bonnie Hunter is doing this year. I think she is calling it "Jewel Box Stars". https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2018...jewel-box.html I guess it's a fairly old pattern with many names.

Thanks! It must have been past my bedtime when I failed to read the title and several subsequent posts that mention "Jacob's Ladder"! :o Great quilt! I've heard of Jacob's Ladder, but it never really caught my eye before yours.

givio 08-26-2018 12:05 PM

I agree with Rose_P, I saw the square and square block (the center seams didn't seem very obvious at first glance) paired with the 9patch type block using a 4patch in the middle. Maybe because your use of browns and blues didn't divide up into blocks that I could see well. Anyway! It looks great! It's a nice one to keep. :-)

redquilter 08-26-2018 03:50 PM

very handsome quilt. Your hubby will love it
