When I first came to this site, I learned how to do 3-D flying geese so I did some really "large" ones (if you can believe that!) and put them on the back of a quilt I needed to fill up space with, so here it is:

Thank you. Those tumbling bl. are 3-1/4".

barnbum 10-24-2009 02:10 PM

They're so wonderful! So colorful! If you stuck a quarter on them we could compare sizes and our jaws would all drop I bet.

Are some paper pieced? That's still a mystery to me.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, barnbum! Will try and remember to stick a qtr on them when photographing - hahha

Yes, some are paper pieced, the log cabins, the 1000 pyramids WIP; tiny string bl. are fdn. pcd on muslin, snail's trail is paper pcd, GMG is hand pcd, hand quilted; trip ar. the world is hand pcd unfinished; and the blue heart is paper pcd, 3D fly. geese are machine pcd; sunshine and shadows is machine pcd and the tiny 9patch bl. are all hand pcd unfinished.

There are wonderful paper piecing sites. Carol Doak is known for all her pp'ng projects; Susan Druding equilters.com, quilting.about.com., quilterscache.com so check these links out when you get to paper piecing. Thanks again for your nice comments! :-)

pocoellie 10-25-2009 03:58 AM

I admire anyone who can make/work on any block smaller than 4". Six inches is about the smallest I'll go. But you have done a wonderful job on them.

When we do foundation pieced strip quilts at Workday at the Post, we are always sewing on to a 10.5 inch piece of old sheet or whatever ...
Never dawned on me to make them a different size! (trying not to rock the boat, don't you know <g>)
I find myself drawn more and more to that mini concept! Just trying to figure out if more smaller blocks makes a lap robe (60x72) heavier?

mimee4 10-25-2009 07:36 AM

Your work is wonderful. You have done a great job on working with small pieces. Can't imagine....

I'm so happy you love my work! It's so nice to hear others appreciate it. Let me know what you really like and I'll do a design especially for you! I've really gotten into 3-D lately and I believe you guys will really love my next project coming up soon. These minis are just so quick to finish. The disappearing 9-patch was the first mini I have done in years and I couldn't stop there. Maybe this will lead to something...LOL. thanx again!! Your compliments are so nice to hear. 8) 8)

Thank you soooo much, pocoellie! I'm glad you enjoyed seeing my work! Six inches is way out of my ballpark! But I admire all those giant-sized blocks you guys do! They are the greatest!

Thank you, sodymare! I just adore that block also! Remember the time I wondered how anybody could like that block; then found myself doing one!! haha. Love the dark red too. Wanted to tell you that dk. red in the lst pic fabric is over 100 yrs. old. It was given to us by an elderly woman, distant relative of the family, and the fabric looks as good today as it did then. They made things so well back then. It has white stars on it. When I didn't like doing the "Y" seams on the machine, I think I hand pieced a lot of it back then. Thank you for your nice words! :-)

Thank you, ranger!! I just adore the tumbling blocks. I really should finish it. People really loved it when it was displayed in a shop. I have been meaning several times to tell you how much I love your avatar!!! It is so beautiful and well done! Everytime I see your pic, I'm reminded to tell you. These 3-D quilts are so effective and attn-grabbing. I'm working on one now just for something different to do and really loving it. Thank you for admiring my work and commenting. It's so appreciated!

Yes, you can make them any size you want and use up a pc of ugly fabric you don't like as your fdn. pc, or do like me and use the el-cheapo muslin for that. You should try a 3" or 4" block to see how you like it. Start off with a block w/minimal # of pcs so you don't get discouraged and you'll love it. The smaller bl. won't make your robe heavier, but it'll take much longer to do, naturally. Paper pcing them will make it lighter weight; it just washes away. Is your lap robe a lap quilt or is it a robe that's lap size?
