I started out making a small hexagon throw for myself for the evenings when it's cool. Then I decided I wanted to make it a square/rectangle and one thing led to another and it just grew. There are about 3500 hexagons. The second picture is a small doll quilt I made with the leftovers.

I cut out a ton of these probably 50 or more - for a tote bag I made my daughter. I HATE working with them. PM if you'd be interested in taking them off my hands....I'll send you pictures of what I have but I was actually going to throw them away!

Just a few hexagons, huh?

scowlkat 01-13-2011 05:44 PM

Hate to see what you call a lot of hexagons! Awesome!

GraceyFaas 01-13-2011 06:40 PM

I don't think I could work on this! I get vertigo and this is definitely busy. Beautiful but busy :?

klgreene 01-13-2011 07:07 PM

RkayD 01-13-2011 07:43 PM

That's just beautiful. I take my hexi's with me alot and work on them when I need something to do with my hands. Can I ask how you did the backing?

oksewglad 01-13-2011 08:55 PM

How big are they? I'm waiting to get old and gray to start one of these. Oh wait a minute--I am gray, just getting old--not there yet.
Anyway--it is a gorgeous quilt--even the doll quilt! Thanks for sharing.

Someone claimed my hexagon's - glad they are going to a good home!

caliquocat 01-13-2011 09:53 PM

Wonderful quilt! I'd like to make one like it but I'm too old to start now. :-)

trisha 01-13-2011 11:57 PM

Very ambitious!!! Lots of hard work. Very nice.

k3n 01-14-2011 02:29 AM

Absolutely beautiful - I assume it's English Paper Pieced? This was how I first started to quilt, aged 9 and I still pick it up from time to time (not the same quilt obviously, I'm not QUITE that bad with my WIPs!) How big are your hexes?

SueDor 01-14-2011 03:05 AM

WOW!

leatheflea 01-14-2011 03:22 AM

Wow I love it. How long did that take? These types of quilts are my favorite. So much color. Beautiful!

Vickymomof6 01-14-2011 03:26 AM

WOW! That's a lot of hexes!

Vicky

plainpat 01-14-2011 04:11 AM

My goodness....what patience you have! Mine would have ended up being a miniature :-) as I can't do hand sewing.

quiltlin 01-14-2011 05:40 AM

Actually, the big one isn't quilted yet, it's just a top but I plan to just lop off half of the hexagons around the border and layer, quilt and bind it. I do have one though that I am just laying it on the borders and appliquing it down.

I use freezer paper for the base of the hexagons and it is all hand pieced. I just went through my scrap bins and used whatever I had and believe me I still have lots of stash left. Those little 2" squares that I used didn't use up much of the fabric I had.

Thanks everybody for commenting and I do this in the evening while watching TV.

BizzieLizzie 01-14-2011 06:59 AM

What a fantastic quilt! I love it. A lot of work but hey! what an achievement. Well done.

paintedquilt 01-14-2011 07:20 AM

Grandmothers Garden never looked sew good :!:

JanMack 05-06-2011 09:22 AM

I love this! This is what I'm doing now. I'm making hexagons from all the quilt scraps I've saved up from previous quilts. So far I've made 340...only about 2,000 more to go!

just_the_scraps_m'am 05-06-2011 09:29 AM

love, love, love that random look...it looks so well planned!
